Converting the type 4 engine from a Bus or Porsche 914 to fit a Beetle. A must watch video!
It's all Do It Yourself Video Install. With New Scenes!
Converting my 76 Porsche 914 engine to fit my 68 bug. This is the same type 4 engine that's in a 70's bus! The only difference is that it has a heaver flywheel and cam that's design for a 2 ton bus! But other wise it's the same and will work just fine in your bug!
For sake of simplicity if you want a DTM type 4 kit then get one, I don't know how difficult it really is to install. Just remember, it's big $$$$!!! so I ended up going with a CSP kit at half price!
Links to all the parts I will be using plus the Joe Cali hand book and the DTM kit that I'm Not using! Just thought you might want it!

This video is amazing. I am looking into doing the same for my bug. I like the way the oil cooler has not been relocated. Also like the home-made oil filler. 914 engines do not have a hole for the adaptor offered by CSP. It also makes it possible to use the original 914 oil filler, which I do think is very creative. Thanks for sharing, very inspiring !

Nice job. My east coast imitation Manx could use a type 4.

Seal those seams on the blower housing next time with seam sealer or there's a product called Big stretch at most hardware it's for widows and doors it's paintable and a third the price of seam sealer... Welcome..

Did you use the type 1 lower engine studs? I didn't and had a difficult time getting the motor in. I'm thinking shorter lower studs would have been better.

Hi man I’m currently install a type 4 in my 62 bug and I’m looking to buy the conversion flywheel but fat performance website shut down so I’m gonna have to buy it elsewhere but also I’ve heard mixed information on the pilot bearing situations how and what pilot bearing did you use? Thank you

Hopefully you’ll see this. I am in the process of putting a bus motor in my bug. I was wondering if I need a rear support like on a bus? And what muffler did you end up with after the stinger.
@Motor7710

You probably already figured it out, but no you don't need this rear support you'll be fine with out it

I ended up reusing my old turbo muffler from when I had a type 1 motor. Just had cut and lengthen the collector. Now it's super quiet

Thanks for getting back to me. I ended up having to order a stainless exhaust. Nothing else is available right now. Hopefully it will clear the bug body, but if not that means I get some fun time making sparks.Did you strap your tranny? And what transmission do you have installed. For money sake I will have to use the bug tranny for now.

I'm confused how the oil cooler in this application will get any air flow. In both type 1 and type 4 motors, the oil cooler is always inside the fan housing. As such, there is a constant air flow over the cooler, even at idle. In this configuration, since heat rises, heat from the cooler will rise into the engine compartment and heat up the engine bay instead of heat being pushed out by the fan blowing over the cooler. In addition, the engine bay is no longer sealed off from the heat of the exhaust which is just below the cooler. Exhaust heat will get pulled up through the cooler from the bottom of the engine by the negative pressure of the fan, and cook the cooler. Will the engine continue to live with this cooler configuration - with no air flow over the cooler - especially a hot rodded engine with Webers?

I didnt watch the whole video before commenting. I just watched where he makes a shroud to push air into the cooler. Im going to shut up now...

Monkey finger I had a good read thank you for your inquisitiveness. Okay let me try to explain it in a couple of sentences. The fan is actually blowing through the oil cooler that air is coming straight from where the type one oil cooler was. There is positive pressure blowing down the oil cooler. I've driven this car at 90 miles an hour on the I-5 for over 2 hours without backing off. The hottest the oil temperature got was 210f with an ambient temperature of 110F. The biggest problem I have in the winter is over cooling. I always get a little water condensation inside the block. I would say it's kind of harmless. But I suggest you should probably watch the whole series of the type for upright conversion. It's not the best camera that I was using back then but it gives you an idea of what's happening when it comes to the air ducts for the oil cooler. Thanks again for watching. Sera
