I heard Hoyt on BBC radio years ago.... Told Dad about him..and Dad went out and bought a CD... Loved him ever since.... Saw him in 1982.. and sang along wth each song... Bless you Hoyt..
I was lucky enough to see Hoyt live at The Great American Music Hall, in S.F. He had such a wonderful stage presence and personality. His vocal range was outstanding and he had such GREAT phrasing. He is greatly missed. As an interesting side note, he wrrote and recorded the original jingle when McDonald's introduced the Big Mac (which he mentioned at the show.
😲😲. Took us 3 weeks to get to it, but what a video! We always knew you were a rock star, but you were a Rock Star!!! You were a drum major!!!! We figured you'd been in orchestra and not matching band. I did one year in tall flag (behind the band) and 2 in "ID Squad" (in front of the band with the device bearing the name of the school + dance routines for the half time shows). They'd send us to camp at Loyola Marymount U in the summers. Never made it to the premier small flag group because I couldn't make the weight limit at audition final year. More time for academic decathlon and editing the poetry journal.... Hoyt Axton was a familiar face to 70's era tv watchers, so this was a great memory jogger (haven't heard those tunes in dogs' years).
BilliesTheme came from the movie Buster and Billie. I saw it when I was a teen in the 70’s and hadn’t thought of it in many many years. I believe he did all of the music for the pic.?? A coming of age love story. Thanks so much for bringing back the memory. ❤️
OMG!! Awesome! I live in the town that Hoyt is buried in! I go up to the cemetery and hang out at his grave, smoke a bowl, and play his music a few times each summer!!🥰🥰🥰❤
We used to go to Missoula every summer where my daughter was in a performing arts camp. We always made the short trip to Hamilton to see Hoyt's grave. The first time we went down there, the workers showed us where it was, they seemed to have an idea that's who we were there to see....
I think I've mentioned it before- I grew up listening to Hoyt Axton. My mom was a fan. Saw him at the Oregon State Fair in '78. Love his music. Thank you, Lee 🙏
You've given me another reason to watch/listen to the Grammys tonight. I had the opportunity to meet Hoyt Axton in 1973 in Vancouver at The Egress coffeehouse. He was every bit as big-hearted as he seemed. Thanks for reminding everyone what a wonderful singer/songwriter he was. Thanks for the wonderful music by Hoyt. (youtube ads aside) I'll be watching for you on the Grammys. 😉 On another note, I was saddened to learn of the passing of bluegrass fiddle player Roland White. I first heard his playing on Country Gazette's album 'Don't Give Up Your Day Job', on which YOU appeared! Damn son, your career has permeated so much of the music that I've enjoyed throughout my life. Too many albums to count.
Hi Mr Sklar, I`m enjoy all yours video. I wich you could play many years encore. Sorry for may be some false. I`m a french man. from Quebec. Your kindness is so impressive. Hi think you are the best bass player of all time Thanks André
On RU-vid there's a Hoyt Axton-Linda Ronstadt video in which they sing Lion In Winter, and Hoyt forgets the name of the tune when he tries to introduce it. Reportedly he fell in love with Linda, and wrote the song "I Collect Hearts" about her.
I was working at a recording studio back in the mid 80s... One day the owner of the studio asked me if I'd like to meet Mae Axton. He had already set up an appointment with her to seek her advice regarding his career in the music business. She kindly welcomed us into her home one summer afternoon and we talked for 2 or 3 hours. Toward the end of the conversation she mentioned that she had 2 sons... Hoyt the famous singer-songwriter and John, an attorney. She said that John would never have been happy as a singer-songwriter and that Hoyt would never have been happy as an attorney. So... her advice was that every person should follow whatever their heart tells them to do.
@@notbraindead7298 That's a valid risk I suppose but there's also a risk in playing it safe. John Lennon's aunt Mimi told him, 'The guitar is alright as a hobby, John, but you'll never make a living at it.' If he would have listened to her then the Beatles might never have existed.
@@Santiago-ov8gc I agree with you basically. I would not try to discourage a dreamer. But if it's your child or sibling it's painful to watch them waste a portion of their life. Using the Beatles as an example is like "what are the chances lightening will strike in the same place 4 times!"
A friend who worked with me for several years was a friend of Hoyt. My friend was a pharmacist in Branson while Hoyt was there. My pharmacist friend explained his medicines to him each time Hoyt got a new one. And he helped him keep them straight. Anyway Hoyt started to come buy to the worksite and ask him to go out for coffee once in a while. He had high regard for Hoyt and grieved when he died.
I live with the "PET PARADE"🤣😂🤣😂🐱🐶 Just love it! What a wonderful voice Hoyt has. Thank you for today's selection Leland. Always thinking of us in the midst of your very busy schedule💞 I really wanna see pix of you as Drum Major, spin that baton!! ROAD TRIP🚗.......be safe and enjoy the company my friend. Peace for the Ukrainian people 💪💙💛🇺🇦 Thank you Frontline workers 👏 Please stay safe everyone 🤗 and have a great rest of your weekend 👍😉✌️☀️ Will be watching Grammy preshow stream!
From the moment one upgrades to the premium RU-vid one has all the ads disappear. They give you a few months free at the start. What a relief to never have another interruption. I strongly recommend it.
Good morning Lee. It's SOOOO APPRECIATED that you get up as early as you do and hop on to keep your visits going despite how busy you are! I'd be freaking out at this point if I had to perform later this day and I would not be able to focus on anything else. This supports the fact that once again, you are a true professional!! You're awesome man!!
I saw him several times at the Golden Bear! There was a mural painting on one of the walls there (I think it was titled "The Folk Singer") I always thought it was modeled after Hoyt! He was a bigger than life character - already a legend in my High School days. in 67 one of the guys in my school performed "The Pusher" for the Hootenanny audition (He had to settle for Greenback Dollar for the show) I saw Renee with Hoyt at The Troubadour doing Boney Fingers on Jimmy Buffett's first early days - Mike Utley was his only accompanist. I mentioned some of this on post #418 (Ironically the day after Leland's first vaccine shot! - ah, "the good old days"!) ;-)
Hi Leland, I really appreciate your videos and your music! You tend to lift my mood with your great stories and anecdotes. You're a big inspiration as both person and musician! I wish you good health and prosperity, best regards from Denmark! 🤍
Lee, in spite of your popularity and incredibly busy schedule, you chose to get out of bed early and share your experience and music with us. This is above and beyond what could be expected of anyone and especially an accomplished professional such as yourself. I want you to know that l sincerely appreciate your generosity and unselfishness. I suppose today is too late to vote for TIF for a best new artist Grammy, but I would if I could.
I watched the Ken Burns doco on the Civil War in the 90s. I was so moved by it I purchased the soundtrack as soon as I could. Hoyt sang 'Yellow rose of Texas'. A beautiful rendition.
Hoyt had a very sonorous voice which kinda raised his songs to a higher level. In the '90s, I had Hoyt doing an a capella gospel song on an old analog answering machine....."Blessed savior..... lead and guide us." There was a lot more to Hoyt than met the eye. His mama was a songwriter and teacher. HIs first cousin was David Boren, Democratic governor and U.S. Senator from Oklahoma.
With respect to Hoyt Axton, my takeaway from today's presentation is a visual of our teenage host high-stepping across a football field, baton whirling, shako hat perched atop an eventual significant head of hair/beard.
@@jackwezesa1081 Jack I remember this song particularly, as it was featured in the film “Easy Rider”, which was the first X-rated film that I was able to see. The age cert for the X was 18, and I was only 16. As I was on my own, I think that the cinema staff thought that I wouldn’t be any bother. The other film on with it, was The Graduate, which was also X rated. A trip down memory lane.🤗
A few singers and musicians from Oklahoma: Elvin Bishop, Vince Gill, Woody Guthrie, Reba McEntire, Bob Wills, Gail Davies, Garth Brooks, Gene Autry to name some. Thank you for the visit and best wishes for the show today The continuing horror around the world tests the heart to continue on, but to turn away would be in collusion with it.
Leland, please consider that asking your memory banks to process simultaneously short and long-term retrieval so early in the morning 🌄 may be managed a bit differently. . .such a lot going on. . .time to get dressed and to the performance. Cool 'road adventure'.. please remain safe and sound. 🙏
Always loved Hoyt's voice. He could draw you in to the story of the song and you could 'see' what he was singing 🎶 Della and The Dealer is my favorite. It's crazy I can remember him on Ponderosa and WKRP (even Hee Haw 😄) Have fun tonight and safe drive home 🖕
Hoyt Axton 🔥sounding so lovely. Trying to live stream hoping the pre-show will start on it. Got the live stream on the computer, while I'm catching up two days of you tube subscriptions. My body apparently decided to make me sleep for the long haul no matter what I thought. Just got a lot of cooking done. Several dinners leftover to zap later. Container-ing it all. 👩🍳
I remember the great songs of Hoyt Axton but I really remember his acting. The songs he sang in Smokey and his inventor character in Gremlins made a huge impression. Check out the soundtrack from Smokey!
Leland excuse me I just have a question that I wish will not offend you. With such a magnificent beard do you use a hair dryer after showers? This beard is really well cut and simply magnificent.
Hoyt Axton was one of my favorite country music singers and songwriters. "Boney Fingers", "When The Morning Comes", and "Dell and The Dealer" are my favorite songs. Hoyt Axton should have had several #1 Billboard country hits, including the songs I mentioned.
I remember that beef strike back in the day. People were so crazy for beef, they would have gone after anyone. Good thing you warned him brother. He was a hoss.
Hey LS, Use Firefox... They have "Add-Ons" that prevent hijacking The one you need is: Ad (Hoss' Last Name from Bonanza) Ultimate. A LIFE CHANGER! Hoyt's Never Been To Spain, TDN version, is EPIC good! Now I understand Well I Never Been To Heaven, But I've Been To Oklahoma" Well They Tell Me I Was Born There, But I Really Don't Remember..... Then I went to Spain in 2018. Loved Basque Country. Talk about being a Foodie! LOL My friend lives in Newport Beach and drives to Vegas always. So much easier with luggage and INSTRUMENTS. Rock on!
What's in the Oklahoma water? Leon Russell, Jesse Ed Davis, Bobby Whitlock? I think. I know I'm missing a few more. Saw Axton at the Jubilee Auditorium. Amazing power.
If you look up "stage presence" in the dictionary you'll find Hoyt's picture. Nobody you can name owned the stage like this entertainer. The first note he struck would bring down the house, EVERY TIME.
Lee, you said it best, “The incredible Hoyt Axton.” Enjoy your drive home. Drive safely! If you were in Minnesota, I’d tell you to watch for deer. Slava Ukraini! 🇺🇦 Stay safe and stay well!
I swear the more you tube you watch the less ads you get......Mine turn on for a second and then goes right to my video of choice. When I first found you tube during beginning of pandemic they would interrupt every 20 seconds.
@@lastnamefirst4035 hahahahaha......ikr!!!!! I apologize I honestly thought LKR. I am thinking of everything......Lee knows Revlon......aahhh nope........Gotcha......ikr!!!!!! Phewww.
Mr. Sklar, you could get a subscription to Apple music for 10 dollars a month and your songs would not be interrupted with those advertisements. Ive got a subscription its great. Just looking out for you Bassman. Hoyt was great by the way. Enjoy your channel
