The skin is involved in the majority of SLE patients; a characteristic erythematous or maculopapular eruption over the malar eminences and bridge of the nose ("butterfly pattern") is observed in about half. Also, Joint involvement is frequent but is usually not associated with striking anatomic changes nor with joint deformity. Central nervous system (CNS) involvement is also very common, with focal neurologic deficits and/or neuropsychiatric symptoms. The spleen may be moderately enlarged. Involvement of the heart is manifested primarily in the form of pericarditis. Pericarditis is explained.
