Hydrangea expert told me most hydrangeas need at least four or more hours of sun to bloom well. I have a Annabelle smooth hydrangea and she does bloom in shade.
@mwillis7791
@mwillis7791 3 месяца назад
I live in zone 5b in Colorado and because of our elevation we have harsh sun. I have some in full sun and they do well but they get shade starting around 2. I’ve tried some in another place where they are in shade all day until about 3. The harsh late afternoon sun burns them so badly. Don’t be afraid to move them if they don’t do well. I have found them to be forgiving.

All of your hydrangeas are gorgeous, but the coloring of the Tuff Stuff Top Fun hydrangea is stunning! I planted a Limelight and a Little Quick Fire three years ago, and they’ve exploded this year! I would love to add the Top Fun to my landscape. Faddegon’s is my go-to nursery for hydrangeas. I’ll have to see if they carry it. You have beautiful gardens, and I’m happy to have found your channel being that we live in the same county.

Too fun will be new next year so there’s a chance they will have it. I’m sure the ones we are planting will be tiny to start. Faddegons definitely has the best hydrangeas locally.

Use plantskydd! I tried liquid fence before and it didn’t work. A guy who runs a nursery told me that’s what they use. You only use it once per season. Spray the leaves and deer and rabbits will leave them alone. I have deer and rabbits that come into my yard every day. They don’t eat anything I sprayed anymore.

I was never a fan of hydrangeas. Growing up, I only ever knew of the blue variety and I don't care for blue flowers that are too "in your face" with their blueness 😂 BUT NOW I can not get enough of them! They are so gorgeous. So many varieties. Luckily I do not have the space to do too much damage but I am finding myself slowly replacing other perennial shrubs with hydrangeas.

I am obsessed with hydrangeas as well. I planted a wall of limelights and they are performing beautifully. I also planted a hedge of Bobo hydrangea on either side of our front property (inspired by Heidi from Garden Crossing) and they are looking magical - especially in the evening like you had mentioned that they have a glow to them -- this is very true. I'm most proud of taking a Limelight hydrangea shrub and turning it into a standard by selecting the longest strongest stem and staking it - it turned out beautifully and year two is looking lovely. I loved this hydrangea tour and I learned a few tips -- Zone 5b as well 🇨🇦

Beautiful garden…really stunning 🤩, inspiring and always so lovely to also see a video of you two. Our hydrangeas are also in full bloom right now here in Germany. What I find so interesting, how is it in your zone about the watering? Although there was a lot of rain recently it is getting very dry here and the future of hydrangeas is counted in some gardeners eyes here. How you manage to keep your hydrangeas watered enough or is it not that of a deal in your zone? Thank you again for your beautiful videos and shared dedication to gardening, colours, plants and sense of artistry 🎉

The quickfire standard transformation is fantastic! Wow! The blush hydrangeas are going to look great out front. Love that color. You guys should try puffer fish! I bought a 3 gallon bobo in May. In the past few weeks, it has started to flop. 😟 It looks great otherwise so I think it just needs to mature. It gets full sun and has grow nicely in the past 3 months. Firelight tidbits are ones of my favorites as well. Last year I bought my dad two almost mature size ones. Because they were so huge, they were expensive- $60 each. They look even better this year than last year. He really enjoys them. He had no hydrangeas because he wasn’t aware of all the new ones for full sun. Back in the day he had tried a few macrophylla that didn’t fare well.

Good morning Eric and.Christopher, just found your channel. Beautiful gardens. Want to inquire about your blue kazoo spireas . I garden in CT 6a. I’ve tried mine both in more shade and in morning sun (5 hours ) can’t seem to get that gorgeous color on my leaves. What conditions are yours planted in? Want to transplant mine in the spring to a new location to get them to shine. Also, what is the ornamental tree above the limelight prime hydrangea with the silver foliage? BTW, I also have light o day, and haven’t seen blooms. I’ve had it two yrs. Would love a video about your most deer resistant shrubs and trees as I have very heavy deer and mostly rabbit populations here

Thank you so much for this video! I was wondering why 2 of my 3 BoBos didn’t bloom at all! The leaves looked dwarfed . Searched and search for an answer and found it here! What did you use to treat the mites? Your hydrangeas as well as all of your garden looks amazing ! I also reside in NY (6B) . For me, my garden has really already peaked about 2-3 weeks ago, now my coneflowers are losing their original color & roses are not as robust. So nice to see a fresher looking garden! Keep your videos coming!

Thanks. I’m happy you were able to find a solution. Mites are miserable, we knocked them back with some captain jacks…and did one treatment late at night with a stronger bioadvanced spray. It hooks on the hose and blasts them.

Unbelievable,beautiful hydrangeas..you guys in the USA are so lucky!!! Here in Australia we only have 1 arborescence variety available, the original “Annabelle” and only a few Panical and oak leaf varieties. Very rare and hard to find here which is disappointing since they would all do well in our warm climate here. Greetings from Australia 🇦🇺 🦘😃

Excellent collection!! I would have loved to hear how much shade each variety can handle, as well as sun, and still bloom. Northern sun is so different from Southern sun, so often the amount of shade/sun they can handle is different than what is talked about on other channels. I just relocated a few macrophylla that needed more light than they were getting.

I think the panicles and arborescens can definitely handle full sun here. The other types we give some protection

Just wondering how your hydrangeas that you believe mites have gotten to are doing this season. I have 2 limelight’s that look exactly the same . I did some research, and some articles say that this happens when pesticides are sprayed near or around the plant. ( which I did last season) . One of my plants did not sprout leaves this season so I replaced it. And the other started to have the curly leaves again. So I just cut back all the areas affected.

Thank you for sharing all the hydrangeas you have. They are all beautiful. A question. The quick fire fab and the little lime punch are supposed to bloom earlier than the lime light right? So why are they not as open as your lime light? Is it because they are still young?

@pc0086 10 месяцев назад
@growforme5b I have that too, and I have collected almost all PW paniculata hydrangeas 😆. Thought about using quickfire fab for hedges, but the growth rate is much slower compared to limelight and VS. Limelight prime is not a good performer compared to quickfire fab in my garden. As far as the height I need to achieve to block our neighbors, limelight or VS would be my choice. I've seen so many limelight hydrangea hedges, beautiful white blooms, but because I have not seen any VS hedge, it makes me wonder if there is a reason they can't be grown as a hedge. I'm kinda stuck, my left and right brains fight constantly, lol...
@growformegardening

I only mention the fab because it blooms earlier... I don't think there's any reason NOT to use the VS as a hedge, but I can understand hesitating because you haven't seen one.

Gorgeous garden you two! I've just ordered many of the hydrangeas you've got. I'm re-doing a few sections of my yard. Im technically in 9B but my max temp (summer) is usually no more than 70 and minimum is maybe 30 (usually dont freeze). Typically hydrangeas do well here (coastal N. CA) so I'm confused as to why some of the panicles only go to zone 8 but not 9. I thought it might be due to heat but there are plenty of places inland that are 9B and get consistent heat. Any idea why the panicles just go to zone 8? I went ahead and ordered anyway. Will give a try! Looking forward to it!

Apparently the USDA zones haven't been updated since the 80's....it really doesn't make too much sense to me. If you are coastal and temperate you should be totally fine with the panicles in particular. I think there are also sunset zones in your area that you can look up that might give you a better idea of what you can plant.
