[941] Decoded by Touch [942] Decoded by Sight [943] Decoded by Smell: "This is the LockPickingLawyer, and what I have for you today is a Master Lock that's so insecure, I can smell its combination 100 meters upwind of me."
I picked my first Masterlock just today! I held it in the air and said "This is the LockPickingLawyer and what I have for you toda~" and it popped right open! That counts right?
Worst part of this is that it looks exactly like you are just opening the lock normally. So you could open it at a crowded pool and nobody other than the owner would be even a little suspicious.
That's exactly what he's referring to when he says you can open it without tools in a matter of seconds. There's no way for anyone other than the owner to know that you're not just opening a case that belongs to you.
No, they didn't. Master Lock knows exactly what they're doing. They're banking on people not looking into their shoddy workmanship. And most people won't.
On the up side, he just taught me how to open the one I’ve had sitting in garage for years after I forgot the combo! The downside was how stupidly easy that was.
Survey of customer complaints: the hinge breaking in half the entire lock falling off (it's only screwed into the plastic on the side opposite the latch) the cable coming unlocked when jiggled the lid opening if the box is twisted or dropped (or shimmed, since there's no lip on the lid) the printed numbers on the dials wiping off easily the lock failing to open with the correct combination (or only unlatching either the lid or the cable, but not both) the lock reset mechanism not working the lock opening with the wrong combination or any combination the crimped ends sliding off the cable easily rubber flap falling off immediately sold as water-resistant when it's obviously not (holes for wires, no gasket, no lip) I was going to say that it's a marginal upgrade from using a zip-tie and a batman lunch box, but after looking at all the pictures of them falling apart in customer reviews, I'm actually going to say that a child's lunch box might be more durable. Nothing says "appearances over function no matter the cost'' quite like that fashion statement, though. Adding superficial aluminum decorations only made it cost more and provides no benefit toward the ostensible raison d'etre. They could've made an equally shitty product for less, but they actually spent extra money to give false impressions. That should clue you in on what goes into the design process. So yes, its refined appropriateness for a category of intentionally substandard products is noteworthy.
I had some shoddy bike locks I'd lose when i moved then forget the codes but they were easy to figure out so still usable. Just mostly as a deterrent though.
@phuc ewe this is the biggest issue with this. You'll look like you're just dialing in the combination even if you're actually trying to pick it because you don't need any tools, so there's a good chance that nobody will bat an eye even if you're picking it in a public, crowded space.
@@ETXAlienRobot201 yeah, but then again, Rolex makes horrifically bad watches, so it's not particularly surprising, or much of an achievement on the part of the faker.
"This is The LockPickingLawyer, and what I have for you today is this welded shut house. How much effort would it take to open this front door with a brute force attack?"
I tinkered with my 70’s bike lock when I was a kid and realized that every dial has a loose and pretty visible gate on the correct combination. I wasn’t one who felt the need to steal as a kid.... but I could have stolen 25 bikes a day, easy LOL. Glad to see 40 years later that my suspicions were correct.
I went to my local handyshop, and out of all the 30 or so lock models they have, they are all MasterLock. Needless to say I didn't buy any there... Thanks LockPickingLawyer!
Not all masterlocks are terrible. They have some relatively decent padlock bodies but the catch is they're usually only available at locksmiths. By and large the masterlocks products at your local Walmart or home Depot are absolute garbage.
To be fair, one terrible product doesn't invalidate the rest. First of all, it should be obvious to everyone that security isn't about being impossible to beat - it's about being impractical for a given use scenario. This video shows that in the role that this device is supposed to play...is wholly inadequate as even a novice could notice that the gap looks different on one of the 10 digits of each roll. Even a child can recognize basic shapes. It's common for companies to develop products of different quality for different audiences and uses - consumer grade is usually cheap with basic preventative measures, while industrial grade typically is far more expensive due to tighter tolerances, hardened steel and thicker mechanisms. It's not expected for a potential thief to bring a loud, easily visible power grinder to your neighbor's shed, but it is expected that a business that can house far more valuable items could be a target of such, so the lock is engineered in a way that delays most intrusion attempts. TLDR; cheap locks are always cheap, and while this video shows a completely useless lock, not all MasterLocks are quite this useless. Unpickable locks start at around $120; $15 locks are a deterrent, not a preventative measure.
I can already imagine LockPickingLawyer robbing a bank. "This is the LockPickingLawyer and I'm standing here before the counter at Lloyd's B...." *heavy safe door opens in background* "In any case, that's all I have for you today."
"So here we are, at the Maricosa County Jail. As you can see, the law enforcement agency who have put me in here used a LFD CoreMaster Locking system in my cell. Unfortunately for them, it has 2 major flaws..."
I had the misfortune of encountering one of these once. It was jammed, so I just bashed it down to the ground while it was still attached to the post, and it busted wide open.
tyranneous That would make many locks negative. Anyway, division is better, written as percent. Normal open with proper key and code is 100%. A typical good lock might be 10000%
I have this lockbox. It must be an improved version - thanks to this guy! There is zero space between the tumblers and the case around it. I cannot see a gap at all. This guy should be hired by lock companies before putting a product out. P.s. still leery of this safe now though. ☹️
Thanks for taking the time to post this; I spent some time this morning trying to get into mine with no luck and was wondering what I was missing! Mine was just recently purchased.
Greetings LPL! Love your videos! Watched hundreds! You convinced me to try my hand at locksport. Just recieved my Sparrow lockpicks yesterday, and have already opened my first Abus padlock (65/30) and my sparrow practicelock with all spools. Today i will try to pick my leftover copy of a 7 chamber 6 pin Trioving SEC Mortice cylinder. It has proved itself rather unwilling to open. If i have learned anything in the last 24 hours, it is how massivly impressive your skills are and how good you are at what you do. Thank you for your content! Respect and greetings from a fan from Norway! Have a lovely day!
I really enjoy your channel. You have educated me on locks to the point I never knew possible. I don't have a need for high security locks or a business I need to lock up, just part of the public that is one step smarter because of the selfless videos you provide for us to enjoy. And on a side note my best friend locked himself out of his houseboat and it uses a quickset style home lock with 5 pins. Because of you and all of your videos I picked my first lock with a really small flat head screwdriver and a really small allen wrench as the pick. Your voice in my head the whole time...now my friend thinks I'm a spy...lol
You are actually doing a public service. Thank you for all the great vids. Gotta tell you I’m not into picking locks but use your videos to review potential purchases. Once more... thanks lpl
TYVM for this. I bought one used for $5 at the swap meet today, and I messed up setting the combo and couldn't get it open. I couldn't do it as easy as you, I couldn't see well even with a light shining on it, and took 10min+, but I finally got it open, and have since correctly set it. Saved me from a smashed and broken $5 paperweight so TY.
@phuc ewe Never saw that one. I will ignore this comment and act like I don't know what you are talking about. It is a self protection or maybe preservation method I use so I don't feel disappointment anymore. Thank you for your effort but you are now dead to me. Good day sir.
@phuc ewe Oh, I know that 'Beaver' video. I also know 'Le Coq' from April 1st last year and Valentine's Day 'Chastity Cage'. I wonder how someone can make such video's without even a SMALL hint of laughing during the making.
Lockpickinglawyer Thank you for this. I almost purchased a few of these for my kids. By being able to decode this by sight A thief would simply look like any other owner opening their little lockbox, whereas a tool in hand would immediately give a thief away as unauthorized to have the box in hand.
I always check your channel before buying a lock, but for some reason this time forgot to when I was looking for a portable safe and bought this one off Amazon. Luckily, as some recent commenters have pointed out, Master Lock seems to have quietly fixed the issue shown here because newer versions of this model like I received no longer have the visible gate or really any gap at all. That makes me relieved that I didn't make the worst possible choice. For those considering this, make sure you get a new version; I suggest buying from Amazon and making sure you are buying it new (not used) and sold by Amazon (not from any other seller, even if shipped by Amazon) to maximize the chance of getting a fixed version.
I've had one of these for years. It's an amazing hard case to keep things together and from getting crushed but no, it is not any sort of security at all
Damn, I'm going to need therapy after watching these LPL videos! They make me so depressed that none of these locks are unpickable! Now I have to sit home with my 115 pound shelter dog all day to guard my stuff. And I know he'll tear up my house when I'm gone to get my therapy because he has separation anxiety. I give up.
That's such an insecure feeling..i worked for Best Locking Systems many years ago.. (key/lock coder) the creator of the master and sub master system.. it's all in how the pins fall.. not always but I've been able to use a paperclip to get inside an office building before. (Not BLS). and when i told my boss, the company changed every single lock in the building.. i really like this channel✌
Don't forget to also check out BosnianBill. Him and LPL have actually done a couple collaboration videos. He is also amazing and has been doing these kinds of videos for a while longer. His videos are a bit longer and more wordy than LPL though lol.
The scary thing is that you could do that in broad daylight and it wouldn't look out of place. Any casual observer would probably think you were just looking at the dials and opening it normally.
It's not that you can't make something like this secure, it's that doing it would cost money and eat into their profits. He could pull this one off because of how sloppy the tolerances are. Good tolerances cost money.
No, this channel should teach you not to buy a $20 lock to protect your $10k+ items. Also that, given time, nothing is impenetrable. Ideally you just need to be less enticing of a target than the next person.
Remember, your stuff doesn't have to be completely safe. It just has to be harder to get to than your neighbor's. Thieves always go for the easiest target. A relatively cheap Sesamee padlock with 1-2 security pins will handle most petty thieves (Spool pins prevent raking and bitch picking so while they wont stop LPL they'll still slow down the average thief) and that is really all you need to worry about for everyday use. If you need more security than that, make sure your doors are reinforced and your windows are bullet proof first, because security is only as strong as the weakest link.
What a fun party trick!!! And thanks I had 2 of these sitting in my closet and I couldn't remember what important things were Inside. Got them open, not so important. But fun party trick
if i need a lock to just keep people honest i'll buy a pack of 3 padlocks from harbor freight that are roughly the same price as one master lock, i treat them as re-useable zipties
There's actually a few decent styles of actual reuse able nylon cable ties/zip ties/zap straps to choose from these days... I die a little more inside every time someone at work cuts another one instead of just opening it up like any resourceful thrifty smart person would...
@@NoPegs cheap padlocks are better than reuseable zipties for when you want to prevent someone nosy or a opportunistic klepto from rooting around in your stuff
@@chaosryans, When I worked in Seattle there was a homeless guy who essentially lived in a theater's outdoor emergency exit stairwell on the west side of the lot where I parked. We had a deal, I dropped off occasional homemade lunches for him and gave him a few bucks every now and then. He watched my car for me.
Kinda funny Ive been watching the channel for a while now and saw this video, i actually have this lock but i lost the combination, but i got it open! thanks! lol
I had to open one of these in an escape room today. It was one of the last puzzles to solve as well. I had watched this video before... The temptation to take a big shortcut was almost overwhelming but I managed to resist.
Are there any good combination locks you'd recommend? Anytime I've seen one on your channel or BosnianBill's it was decoded in less than a minute with either that shim or by just putting tension on the mechanism and feeling for the gate. Is that something all combination locks are vulnerable to or are there some better designs out there? And if it's the latter, how do you spot the better ones?
Thanking you for the pointer not buying that thing, now to try it on a briefcase that we have not been able to open for years, we shall see. Lance & Patrick.
If you don't have a feeler gauge, strips of paper work well. Many Kensington-style laptop and briefcase locks can be decoded with just paper. And it's just paper, rather than tools that might cause problems.
IT WORKS!!!! So, I have this safe. I work on the road white often and it gives me slight piece of mind I can put some things in here if I don’t want it left out in my hotel room while I’m gone. However, i put My Apple Watch in it and I, of course, I forgot my password and couldn’t for the life of me remember it. I was about to take it to work and cut it open. This trick saved me from having to do that! Thank you!!!!!! I’m not subscribed to your channel!
