This summer our girls wanted to add a deck to one side of the above ground pool. So, I thought this was a great opportunity to show them how to build one and to make a video. A couple of our Patreon supporters asked if we could make it a very detailed video, and that is want we did.
The techniques and methods used to build this free-standing deck around a pool are exactly the same for any backyard deck that you might want. If you choose to build one you should comply with any local building codes that you have.

You are really one of the best on RU-vid at clearly explaining and demonstrating your techniques with an exceptional attention to detail, it’s really a talent and I can only imagine how time consuming it makes a project like this. Also awesome to see how you include your children in your projects. Great to see a future generation taking an interest in building something!

Thank you so much for this video, I thought woodworkers did not like this kind of "woodworking" enough to post a video of it, it might not be fine woodworking, but these days that's what I am doing, a couples of years back I built one for my sister, it was half inch above the pool, all around the 28 feet diameter above ground pool, this summer I decided to build a deck on one side of the house and a bit past the corner, about 42 feets total, and 8 feet wide, now this project has one requirement, nothing is new, every material used has to be recycled-recovered-reclaimed material, because it's 42 inches high, i built wood buggies with reclaimed wood and reclaimed lawnmowers wheels, so I could unload the stuff in my garage/workshop, and reclaim a lot of real estate in my garage for tools, workbench and workspace...I will then build a solarium with all reclaimed 12 years old windows...you have to use a lot of imagination and a lot of problem solving if you want to use reclaimed stuff....By the way, were you out of Titebond III....I did not see you use any?!?!?!?

I’ve watched tons of deck building videos, and yours finally explained the angled boards up against the pool. Everyone else skips that part. About to build my first deck ever and was just nervous about it. My other concern is why you wouldn’t use hurricane ties along the joists. Toe-screwing them is plenty of strength? Thank you and your whole crew is awesome!
@NYWoodworker
@NYWoodworker 4 года назад
One comment I would make is that I would have either notched the support posts or rest the joist on top of each post. A much stronger support approach than using screws or nails. Having said that, I am sure that the screws/nails alone will, more than likely, be sufficient. Either way I am a fan of your videos. Not sure what I like more, your build videos or that your kids work with you. All about the family!

Great Video! Thank you! I have a question. the pool that I have is an intext 32x16 above ground and the sides bulge out a lot more on that pull. I see that since your pool's wall are pretty much vertical you can come up really close to them with the boards. How would you recommend doing it for me? I'm afraid if i come up too close with the board that the liner will somehow get poked by accident.

there is a much easier way to install the posts on the cement. if you install (bolt down) the bottom of the simpson post base then the spacer, then nail the post on top of the spacer it goes quicker and you can still nail the post base on at an angle.

Excellent construction. take away a curiosity, do you live in an area with a dry climate? Here in the Po valley we have a fairly high humidity and I think that your plant itself would have a much shorter life, especially the supports that connect the poles to the concrete bases. Did I understand that the wood you used is red cedar, is treated with special impregnating agents or is it natural? thanks for your answers and see you at the next episode :-)

Nice video, thanks! However the advice about , the less water you add to concrete the stronger it is. That's not necessarily true, because typically you want a ratio of about .33 to .40 W/C (water to concrete). To put it into simpler terms 33 to 40 LBS of water for each 100 LBS of cement to obtain maximum strength. At a ratio of .33 C/W you should achieve approximately 7000 PSI , or @ .40 C/W 6000 PSI compressive strength respectively after about 30 days of cure time.

Please check with your local building department as to the LOCAL codes on deck framing requirements because this would not pass in my area. Do Not bury your pressure treated wood in concrete it accelerates the wood rot you must use stand off brackets like they did.
