In this video I'm going to show you how to build a small backyard deck with stairs for an above ground pool. I built this deck for my 8' stock tank pool, including a secret hatch so I can access my pump and filter. You could alter this deck to make it bigger or smaller, fit a different sized pool, add on railings or move the stairs. The possibilities are endless. Grab the build plans below for the detailed info and measurements!

Awesome vid! Which pool filter did you switch to? Did the Intex sand filter not do the job? I'm waiting on my 10ft stock tank to arrive but unsure which filter to go with.
@MakerGray
@MakerGray 3 года назад
I got a Waterway TWM-30s and it's awesome. I've heard it's the best. The Intex worked well but the particular size I had was too small for the 8' pool upgrade I installed. I think a bigger Intex (than what I had) would do the job just fine. Thanks for watching!
@samuelmandarelli2645

Nice job. Your top step is incorrect. It’s referred to as a “tripper”. By code, you are only allowed 3/8” variance in risers over the entire run of a stair stringer. An odd riser height within a run, be it high or low… disrupts the natural rhythm that our minds use to navigate steps… supposedly causing a safety hazard that can be offset by fining framing contractors and making them remove and rebuild the stairs… usually about three days after the trim carpenter discovers the error while installing the last piece of trim on a $45,000 hardwood stair trim package. Ask me how I learned this… but all in all… you did a nice clean job. (Licensed structural framing contractor for 35 years.)

Nicely done. Clear game plan that was well executed. Congrats. Curious about your pump: you stated a new, bigger unit. Specs? Satisfied w/ performance? is it too much pump? Seeing some pumps w/ minimum specs like 2800 gallons. Our tank pool is ~1,000 gallons. Thanks for your time.

I've been watching all your videos in preparation for building my stock tank pool and deck in spring '24. I already have the 8' poly tank stored in my garage. In this video you show a larger pump. Do you still recommend a sand filter with glass beads?`Curious for what has worked for you. Thank you for all your amazing tips!
@MakerGray
@MakerGray 11 месяцев назад
Thank you so much for watching! The smaller pump was just fine but I'm really glad we upgraded to the bigger Waterway pump for the 8' tank. I highly recommend it. Zero issues, it's very powerful and it works so well. I recommend putting it on a timer so it just turns on and off on its own. And yes, we still use the glass media with the sand filter. No issues and crystal clear water! I just do a backwash every once in awhile to clean the glass out. Thanks again! you're really going to enjoy it :)

What a nice build. If we had had such a deck, my childhood pool would have been so much more luxureous! And it would not have caved in, when someone accidentally fell on the rim. 😁 Some additional ideas: You might take a router and smooth out the cut off edges, it's easier on the flesh while sitting there. Stairs are really comfortable when all steps are the same size. Here, the top step seems lower, and the step down higher than the others, so I'd lower them a bit. If you put another row of pavers in front of the stairs, your whole feet have a firm and mud free basis, the size of the treads.

did you upgrade to a bigger pump because the one listed in the pool video was insufficient for an 8' pool? Did you already have an outlet for the pump nearby or did you install conduit underground to run wiring to your electrical source. Thank you for the great videos.
@MakerGray
@MakerGray Год назад
The previous pump would have worked but this pump is much better for this size. It's actually bigger than necessary. We do not have an outlet nearby so I run a heavy duty exterior extension cord. However, I plan to install an exterior outlet nearby this coming season. Thank you for watching!

@MakerGray
@MakerGray 2 года назад
For us, our backyard is way too small for a bigger pool. This is a great option for anyone that has any size yard, who may not want to maintain a larger pool, or who likes the look of this pool over a large blue plastic one in their yard. It also cannot be torn or popped like the others. Overall, this is way less expensive for us personally. If I had a bigger one, I'd still want a deck around it. And since the pool would be larger, the deck would be as well - and so would the expense. Thanks!

Thanks! We sized up on our pool (6' to an 8') so we sized up on the pump. But the first pump would have still done the job.

Amazing job by the way I just have a quick question being that you use the concrete center block post aren’t you afraid that overtime the weather that might cause it to sit down and create unevenness
@MakerGray
@MakerGray 2 года назад
Thanks for the question! I'm not worried. The deck isn't super heavy, so if that ever happens, I could jack it up and fix the ground below that block. The ability to move the deck if I ever need to outweighs that concern. Thanks for watching!

This is great! How long did it take you from start to finish to build the deck? Can this be a one day project?
@MakerGray
@MakerGray 2 года назад
Thanks! This build took me a few days (we had rain delays). I'd say it's probably a full weekend project.

How come you changed the pump ?
@MakerGray
@MakerGray Год назад
We upgraded to a larger pool and the new pump has more power. The previous one would have worked, but this one works even better.

Hi. I was wondering how long (hours/day) did it take you to build the deck?
@MakerGray
@MakerGray 2 года назад
Gosh, I really have no idea. This was last year and I was battling rain days and also figuring out the build as I went, which slowed me down. I'd say if I did it over I could get it down in 2-3 days.

Nice I like how you used the extra wood to hold the screamers up while you nailed in the support brackets. Clever and I love clever.
