Such beautiful collection and arrangement of Succulents! I am from India, that too the western part so my succulents get limited time to grow as most of the year, the temperature is more than 35 °c. But your information and enthusiasm is contagious. Really want to have a collection like this some day!
Thanks for the video. I cut off the stalks and flowers and rooted the stalks in the fall/winter here in SoCal and I'm now getting babies on every leaf node! I'm so happy! Free plants! Yay!
I envy you so much! I live in Minnesota and we have VERY hard winters. Sure, the snow is beautiful and outside activities are fun, ie; skiing, sledding, snowmobiling, skating, etc. But EVERYTHING goes dormant and LOOKS dead. My potted succulents all have to be brought in and put under grow lights...its a real pain. I see how you can leave your plants out all winter and they still look beautiful! Thank you for your videos! It makes me happy to see your plants! ☺

She loves succulents and became very excited upon learning 2 or 3 of the ones I have give flowers, and this gave me all the information I could ask for. This was your best video yet, I didn't know you could propagate from flower stalks like that. You explained the process well and it all makes sense to me now. I have been following your videos since your early ones and have learned heaps from you. I will fight you about the beauty of flowers! My plant produced several long stalks (12-16 inches) with beautiful pink flowers, that are now drying up. I want to encourage that growth again. There are some new ones growing. I came here to find out if I should cut the drying ones off or not. I'm still not sure! lol. I'm afraid to lose the flowering stems. I'd love to share a picture, but not sure how!
Thank you SO MUCH for sharing your knowledge! I am a newbie to echeverias and have learnt so much from your channel. One thing that really confused me was the growing seasons esp. since I am in Australia like you. I thought echeverias would grow really well in "full sun" and so I was confused that some of my echeverias completely closed up when it hit the high 30s and 40s ...but now that it's cooling down and raining more, I can see them opening up and a lot of pups and flower stalks forming and it all makes sense now!!
Hello there I am an orchid grower but I am really beginning to take quite an interest for succulent plants (shhhhhhhh don't tell my orchid viewers...LOL!) I really enjoyed your video, it was very informative. I had a succulent dilemma that I needed help with. After viewing countless videos, you were the only one that gave me guidance on what I think I should do. I was given a cutting of a very thick flower stalk with little pups that were already forming on the base of each leaf of the stalk. I wasn't sure if I should remove the pups to propagate them or if I should just plant the flower stalk cutting in hopes of rooting and growing it. I believe the best thing for me to do is to plant the stalk and keep my fingers crossed that it will grow the pups. If you have any suggestions please let me know...again thanks for sharing and I've subscribed to your channel! Happy Growing and wishing you much success!
Cerriscapades Yes it is when you think about it but surprisingly there are many orchid collectors/growers that are just as fascinated with succulents as they are with orchids. I wouldn't even attempt to grow them in my garden here in FL. We just get to much rain but I now have a little greenhouse that may be able to keep them out of harm's way so I figured I would give it a go. I already have many plants outside of orchids and even some that are succulents...but I do feel a sudden urge (that usually becomes a full blown addiction) coming on. LOL! You wouldn't happen to be Filipino would you? Also I was wondering if you sold any of your plants. If so let me know. I would love to do a haul/unboxing video and feature you on my channel. :) Thanks!

Great video! thank you so much. i bought an etchvaria and suddenly it put out 2 stalks and i didn't know what it was doing and for a couple of weeks i was trying to decide whether to cut it off when suddenly it bloomed! i got tiny orange flowers. wow. but as the flowers on one stalk died again i was wondering what to do. and now i found your great video :-) beside the knowledge you provide (after watching lots of succulent videos) i really appreciate that you don't talk fast and are calm and don't try to tell me what's wrong with me that i don't know this stuff (seriously, some people are very judgmental). so to recap: THANK YOU!

Sorry, don't mean to fight you, but sometimes I want to beg you to leave those gorgeous flower stalks on. Different strokes for different folks, I guess. And did you notice I'm almost caught up? I do appreciate the explanation of the link between dormancy and flowering. What about flower stalks that just barely begin forming deep in the rosette and then shrivel and dry up? I've had that happen with my Echeveria purpusorum and it looks like my Aloe 'Pink Blush' is now doing the same thing. Keep in mind, these are windowsill plants. The aloe was outside all summer and happily bloomed at the time. Weird that it's making a second, half-hearted attempt. My Tom Thumb Crassula bloomed all through October and November (they smell lovely, a succulent version of sweet alyssum) though the books say they are spring bloomers. I figured summer dormancy must have been the trigger, and you seem to be confirming this.
Yeah great effort catching up Janet. I hope you're not sick of my face by now haha! As for the blooms, it's mainly in summer that I get rid of them because of all the insects. As for the blooms in the colder months, I generally leave them on (mainly due to laziness), and it is nice seeing the honeyeater birds perching on the stalks to get to the flowers.

My one echeveria seems to have thinner leaves after growing out a flower stalk. Will i be able to bring it back or will its leave propagation produce a normal echeveria?
Just to be clear, the pups prefer to grow on the flower stem with the leaves intact? Are the flower stem leaves basically useless for leaf propagation? They usually look pretty thin. This was exactly the video I was looking for as I am a first season grower and am getting my share of flower stalks in Southern California. I replanted some flower stalks, that have since rooted, but didn’t know what to expect next. Thanks 🍃
Oh also I should probably do a video about it but I remember trying to check if pups grpw both on the leaf and on the node where it used to connect to the stem and I remember seeing pups grow on both. Unfortunately that was from so long ago, I wasn't doing RU-vid at the time yet so I have no hard proof. Will work on it someday.
Hello! Found your channel and I love your garden, I want to create a succulenta garden at my front yard which gets morning sun all the way until around 2pm. Someone at the garden store said they wont survive the winter, I am in Texas and Over the course of the year, the temperature typically varies from 39°F to 96°F and is rarely below 26°F or above 102°F. What succulents would you recommend? Thanks
I don't know if you've been working on this, but I notice less edits in the commentary when you're looking at the camera. Smoooooth. Some do that so much it really bothers me. I like how your methods and video features are developing and expanding. --JeffO
Glad you noticed Jeff haha! With the main let's plant series, I am starting to employ a clever use of b-roll and various zooms to mask the cuts. In the recap, I can't be bothered to spend the extra time to edit since I usually film and upload in the same day (and not everyone watches it anyway 😢😂)
@@Cerriscapades I noticed the zooms and cut aways but didn't want to make it seem like I thought you were cheating or give away any secrets. I also learned a new thing about rooting the flower stalks. I've got one more before winter up here to play with.
Chuck im a beginner plant parent. my imbricata has been with for 2 months its beginning to grow a stalk from the center im not sure if its a bloom or something else haays
My succulent has a really long flower stock. And has flowers but they aren't blooming the seem to just be crispy or drying up . Is there a way to enjoy the flowers before having to take off the stalk. Also will it ever flower again? Is it necessary to remove them?
Hi Dani, yeah you can do that. They are a great source of leaves too because you don't end up plucking from the main rosette. Propagating from flower stalk leaves is good for the varieties that do well with leaf propagation. On the other hand, the frilly and bumpy types do not generally do well with leaf propagation. They do better with the leaves left in the stalk. For that, separate the stalk from the main plant, cut off the flowers, then plant the stalk after it has callused.
Do these methods work on most types of succulents that flower? I have an Echeveria I’d like to try as well as a Haworthia Cooperi that’s about to bloom!
i cut off the flowers because like you said it looks messy and i like my succulents as is .... LOL that and the pests problems.... ugh .... so annoying ...
just found your vids...really great be even better when i get my sound sorted.....do you think its too late to propagate a large single head frilly echeveria with no sign of pups...in brisbane. would hate to lose this one as its already a rescue plant...might need to it harden up a little first, bit too much filtered shade in summer and its a little stretched.
Very interesting information about why echeveria are open or not. But I have heard something different: that echeveria are closing up because of the lack of water... what do you think about that? (cf. shopstick and succulent channel). Hope you will understand what I mean ^^ Take care
It's pretty much the same thing, that's what's implied by my explanation. In summer, by protecting the inner growth, this means that there's less surface area exposed to the sun. This means that there are fewer areas for water to escape from. When dehydrated, they're trying to prevent additional loss. The leaves are more floppy and curl anyway when there's not enough water pressure inside the leaves.

I was thinking that they are open when they need some water, especially during the summer but they might know that there is no water during warm season so they just want to protect themselves! I bought recently a succulent that blooms pink flowers and long skinny stocks, but they all the sudden are now dying now that I’ve transferred it to new soil since the soil it came with wasn’t cutting it for keeping it alive, do you suggest I cut them completely or just remove the flowers and leave the stocks?
The flowers were all ready bloomed and starting to die on their own then the stock followed along shortly after so I’m not going to blame repotting it entirely 😖
If they have been pollinated and fertilised, yeah they will produce seeds. Echeveria seeds are so tiny though, it's easy to mistake them for grains of sand.
Ideally, when it has dried out and calloused over. I plant it in, but not too deep. As long as the tip is in the soil and it is not leaning on its side. Eventually the roots will come out and anchor itself into the ground. But until then I help prop it up by placing rocks underneath the leaves to keep it upright.
@@Cerriscapades Thanks for responding! I'm a very recent follower and new to succulents so sorry if I'm asking frustrating questions. I was also wondering why it's ideal to wait for stems and leaves to callous over before repotting to propagate? I just repotted a jelly bean stem within minutes of cutting it from the mother plant and am wondering if I should have waited?
Reason for letting them dry first is to prevent microbes or fungus from infecting the plant since it has an open wound. If the wound gets wet, it's a lot easier for microbes to get in. Not all microbes and fungi are fatal, but better safe than sorry. It's ok to plant them right away though, it still works. Just don't water them much. Allow some drying period. Bigger plants will have bigger cuts and will need more time to heal. Smaller plants such as the jelly beans don't need so much time. I also just cut and plant them right away.
