So i am so glad you have explained this to the masses. This is exactly how i finally had success with my babies. I used this method on 72 leaves this fall and i ended up with 65 babies. This is truly the best method, alot of people( and you tube videos) seem to wanna spray their leaves to try to get it to prop. This i think is the worst idea, the leaves always ROT, way, way, way too soon. You wanna keep mama around as long as possible, i am planting little plants in 2 inch pots now with mama still attached. I found if mama dies too quickly then the baby struggles and alot of times, just dies. The only different thing i do is when the leaves get a few nice roots, i prop mama leaf up on the side of a pot of dirt and drip 4 drops of water on just the roots every other day. This encourages the roots to go into the soil and the baby just grows. All the while i never let mama leaf touch wet soil really, just the tip. I use the mantra " no roots, no soil, no water". I have also found the longer mama stays alive, i can usually get two stalks or a little cluster, just keep her dry ans only drip thr roots. Once i put them into soil, they go under the grow lights. Just becareful not to bury the tip where the roots are, just let the roots find their own way, they will follow the water down. I cant believe the abundance i have now, i am beyond thrilled. I used to put all my succulent leaves on a paper plate. I got the Styrofoam plates one day because they were the cheapest and soon realized that the roots were sprouting/growing significantly faster on the Styrofoam plates/bowls... I think the shiny material acts as a reflective light adding property for them... I also use a grow light bulb in 1/3 bulbs in my kitchen ceiling light.. It is open so the light goes everywhere in my small kitchen. But the 1 grow light, 2 normal bulbs makes a big difference as for these and cuttings as well as the Styrofoam thing... Only now i'm going to start using Styrofoam egg cartons, after seeing this :) lol

I put a piece of plastic over a contain with water in it, poked holes and then I cycle out my fallen leaves as they form new sprouts and roots. It’s been the fastest technique I’ve tried, giving me a new sprout with 2 to 4 roots in about 2-3 weeks. I’ve been dry propagating prior to trying this. We have a loootttttttttta succulents now 😂😂
You're information is absolutely spot on!! However please keep in mind it depends on the environment in which you live I live in a more humid environment so dry propagation works better for me where as a more arid or desert type area might have problems.
Hi Jess, I love this method of propagation. I've been doing it for a few years now. I've had great success with all the thick succulents jade, jelly beans, burrows tails, kalanchoes, and some echavarias etc. I love the set and forget idea cuz you don't have to worry and watch over them. I've even found some leaves that had dropped somewhere 6-9 months later growing very nicely. I hope more people try this especially if they have problems propagating due to rot from over watering. I thought the powder-like stuff that you can brush off was dust so i removed it from my entire plant lmao turns out it's wax the plant produces to protect itself

Thanks for that, it sort of explains why my leaves did much better lying on just pumice. As opposed to any soil..... The thick leafed ones especially. They lifted out of the trays with many pumice stones attached too! Will definitely try this even easier method, thanks for sharing.
Thank you so much for this video…I have been so discouraged with my succulent propagation process. I have spent a fortune on succulents and trying to propagate them…of course the little light bulb in my brain went off when you were talking about the size and the condition of the actual leaf…MINE ARE SMALL! And the likelihood of them actually reaching a new little pup or even roots are slim! In doing my research I found that different succulent plants have different (likes/process) in their growing season. I have had only 2 baby pups come up out of maybe 10 or 12 succulent plants and each were from a different plant. UGH! My space is supper small too. I am a new succulent inside grower. I have skills to gardening on the out side world so I thought that I would start a inside garden to play with in the fall and winter….Jumped in the wrong season. I love the actual information you give without giving a grandiose picture of how to be patient and kind to your plants…they will give back in their own time….IM LEARNING TO BE PATIENT AND giving myself some grace with my failures. (When you showed the brown dried up leaf that’s what mine have been doing)TY again!!! I’m a subbie now so keep the videos coming.
i guess if worried about roots drying out they could be misted once in awhile. .. i have picked up leaves laying on wooden shelves at lowes or home Depot and they already have baby plants and our roots. ... i just pick up the lose leaves and put then in a tissue and bring home. .. a lot are growing baby plants and i just put the first rescue leaves on to of the soil in some of my house plants. ...
I also have very good results using this method!! However, I’m not sure how to tell when they’re ready to detach from the mother leaf and plant. If you could do a video of that process, it would be helpful! Thanks for sharing your dry succulent propagation process with us!!!! 🌱🌵
this is a bit late, but in my experience, the mother leaves shrivel up (sometimes they don’t, and in that case, you can just cut the leaf off if you want). as for taking the leaves off of the mother plant, I normally do it when they seem large enough to be able to support themselves
Mama leaf will dry up and you will know. She will first turn yellow then die off. Either you can snip her off or just let her dry up. But i prefer letting her dry to a crisp. You want her to stick around as long as possible and give the baby as many nutrients as possible.... Happy Planting =-)
As a matter of fact, a good and healthy succulent leaves will produce roots and babies even without soil. The problem will be when they are transfer to the soil, can not be under the sun for too long, leaves will become to soft and will die. It is better to keep them under the shade until the babies get stronger.

Hey I just recently started watching your channel I have discovered succulents this year I had no idea how to take care of them other than they don't really need water I put them in a terrarium without doing any research they are doing fine and I water them by the way they look but I'm not sure if putting them in a terrarium was a good idea because it is so hard to water them what is your opinion
So you kind of just blew my mind. As a relatively new comer to the succulent lifestyle I believe I'm starting to get the hang of it. I do have one question though, I mean I am about to scroll through your videos to see what other little bits of knowledge you can drop on me but if you could possibly answer it quicker I wouldn't be disappointed LOL. At the end of the dry propagation process after they root enough, how do you plant them? You just flip them over bury the roots in the soil and wait for the babies to pop like a normal propagation?
I enjoy watching your videos! I'm a new with succulents, been working with them for about 5 months or so. Love learning new tips! Definitely will try this method of propagation for I don't have a grow light.
I had the damndest time getting a single leaf going finally and then an even harder time getting one to survive to take the momma leaf off and again even harder to get it grown up past the size of a quarter. The o my way I could do this was with a ton of leafs. And keeping either the air humid, the soils fresh feeling (not wet and def not dry) like just out of a new bag damp. Once it gets roots misting the roots every day, and spoon a soil mound to get the roots to bury themselves. Mine stick their roots up in the air and the moment I bury roots 9 out of 10 times the roots die so I’m working on this method but I know it’s specific to me and not everyone has trouble with this. But bulk is the best answer, it only works when your using a bunch of leafs.

I couldn't tell you! From my understanding it is dependent on the species so probably has to do with genetics. What is so weird to me is even in my fred ives pile I have some that grow roots and some that just grew babies. They usually grow the other later on though. But it is so weird to see which ones grow first. I took leaves from different plants. I wonder if you separated them out by mama plant if they would all grow the same way ??
@@AngelsGrove i propagated leaves from the same mother plant in 2 separate batches. The first batch all grew a pup first, then roots, all very rapidly. Then the second batch took a long time to do anything at all, and only shot out roots. We are entering autumn here and not sure if it's also effected by the temperature. Would like to ask, what do we do with leaves that only grow roots? Do we bury them in soil and water like a normal succulent plant to prevent drying out? I have also had leaves that just ended up rotting and turning soggy when i did that. I'm so confused 🤷♀️
@@KMok-fu5wg I was told that they grow roots first when they dont have enough water/moisture to support the babies yet. And they grow babies first, then roots come when it becomes thirsty. Almost as if they know when they aren't going to have enough to support the plant before the leaf dies out. When propagating anything, I've found temp plays a huge part in growth rate too. very interesting propagation. I like the idea of it with having less chance of mealy bugs as suppose to soil prop. however, thought once the roots start to show or grow especially that much, that they need some moisture and misting to gradually watering more in soil is needed, I guess yo also encourage growth of pups. what's your thoughts on this? ty😊
Some of the leaves fell off today from a newly bought pink succulent by barely touching them. I want to try this dry propagation method . But I'm not sure about where to put the tray or box . I live in a tropical country. It's summer now. Day temp is 33 Celsius on an average. should i put it in a covered box in a dark corner or keep it on a plate in an open space? pls help.

Ive tried moving them away but the drying still haven't stopped. 😥😢 Idk what to do.
I'm glad you are liking it. Either move to a spot with less light or your climate just might not be right for this method, it might not be humid enough. Maybe at this point move to some soil and give some water like normal. :)
Ah thank you, I've been trying to propagate some leaves that I tried to save from a rain incident, the mother plant released its babies. But some of the leaves stayed yellow and bloated so I'm not sure if I should keep them for growing or should i have to toss them, they have pink edges?
Mine has been in the air literally 3weeks long and just die, i do it again with 2 leaves and it's been 2weeks and didn't grow yet, even the root. Rip mine
Dvkatch Lofe sad day 😢 perhaps you don’t have the right climate? Have you tried the normal method of using dirt and water? Dry propagation only works well for climates with high humidity
A growing tip that was new to me is to cush egg shells and drop them in the hole, place plant and cover with soil as-usual My rosemary plant took off this summer. I wonder if you using the egg carton had something to do with the successful quicker propagation? I am going to try the crushed eggshell method with succullents just to see. All of my succulents died this past summer except for the Jade and kalanchoe! At least I now know which ones are tough! Before I could only keep snake plant alive but that even crew straight and tall or in a flower ette form??? But they are all alive
Dear Jessica or anyone else who can answer: I'm curious if you turn the growing light off at night or leave it on for 24 hours around the clock? Doesn't that affect your electric bill?
Maybe my house is too humid (I live in Chicago), my babies will not propagate for nothing! I stopped watering/ spritzing them and 3 weeks later still nothing. I put them under a grow light this week.
I love everything about prop from leaves. I Don't know if anyone else has this issue but whenever I used this recycle-paper egg tray my plantlets, seeds, leaves rot. not 1 percent lived so far. I have tried so many times with different types and different plants from cacti to flowering and veg seeds. any other containers work fine for me.
I’ve only ever done dry propagation on my window cill but you do still need to put on dirt and they also do need light just not direct sun otherwise they burn. Doing it this way I get id day like 95% success
Welcometo FPV dry propagation only works well for like super humid places. Where I’m at now, I need soil and water normally, they would dry out too fast otherwise.
@@AngelsGrove I've rent read this whole comment section and you continually say that this dry method etc only works well in a humid climate. That's not true in my experience. I'm in Tucson Arizona where it rarely gets above 20 or 25% humidity and succulent propagate from leaves very well either forming babies on the broken off leaves or the tiny roots.
Just found you tonight and really enjoyed the video and dry propagation. However will you have another video that shows the next step when they start to make little succulent plants and then how to actually plant them?
Jan Przybylski this method unfortunately only works well if the climate is humid and I have since making this video moved to a very dry climate so I don’t think I would be able to get the babies to grow properly 😔 however, what I will say is don’t do anything until the parent leaf is dried up and then you can remove the parent leaf and just tuck the new roots into some soil. I will be making more propagation videos in the future and you might find them helpful as the process is similar.
I'm just about tired and about to give up with succulent propagation been trying every method inverted in a bottle on dry soil on wet soil nothing these thing take so long.....this method is new I have no grow lights what if I used ceran wrap an placed it on my nursery shelf that's located outside my house
Very interesting. Some of my succulents leaves are all wilted and the variety seems to be a ruffled echeveria. The leaves are not near as thick as the ones you have in the video. Wondering if they need some misting or soil?

At what point do you move them to a soil medium? I have two leaves that grew roots. One of them I put it in the soil. Nothing happened after two weeks. It is still alive but leaf looking a bit brownish. And the other leaf I left it laying on the soil (in the same condition when it grew the roots) but again I dont see any buds. Just roots. :(
Most succulents grow roots before growing leaves. You won't like this answer, but sometimes it takes months for leaves to grow :( I would say, as long as the leaf still looks like there is some life in it, just keep waiting.
@@AngelsGrove they grew roots for like a month but no growth of leaves whatsoever. So I am not sure if I am supposed to put it in the soil or leave it until it grows actual leaves.

Are their roots on yours? For this method to work, your succulent will need roots. If the roots are drying, try propagating directly on the soil and watering when the soil dries out fully. You might not have enough humidity in the air for the roots.
Question at what point do you plant them ? How wet do you keep them after initally planting them up? I have leaves with roots forming so I wonder at which point I plant them
