A customer brought in this off road light bar with the complaint that some of the leds were out. Some of the components were physically damaged and after ordering some replacement coils and finding a replacement LED this unit is up and running again. I did re-secure all of the coils with a good amount of silicone to prevent future damage.

It's interesting they didn't use the solder pads on each end of the boards. Maybe they figured out running 15A trough the tracks of the outermost board was a good idea :D

Hello, what type of microscope do you use and what is the best buy out there for micro repairs. Thank you very much for your videos! Johan.

So in an application like this would a heat gun be better than a soldering iron? I was looking to fix the led bar on my roof rack because I had 3 leds go dim and 1 completely out. Just wasn’t sure how to get them soldered since the whole back side is metal
@norcal715

A heat gun will melt the LED before it is unsoldered. You have to heat the aluminum substrate they are mounted on.

@@norcal715 what did you use to heat it?

I'm pretty experienced in diy 12v wiring and misc in vehicles.i found a heavy 10 bulb led light that had a plastic housing with a huge magnet on the base.I could not find an on/off switch ,it did not work when I plugged it in so I disassembled it and realized that two electric motors ran the up and down and the left and right position from a remote controll or blue tooth idk lol anyhow I ran the light straight to a battery (only the light)and it worked great.The next day I waited until dark to show my son and it no longer worked,I currently do not have test equipment but everything looked good even the board,I tried everything and Im really bummed out over it

That's weird, maybe temperature related. I just don't have an answer. Sorry

I'm curious if this was a "high end" light bar or a cheap one. I'd imagine there is a huge range of price points for these things. It seems like pretty poor quality and a little bit of work could make it much more robust.

My nightrider led working only 3 out of 14. What should I do?
@norcal715

Usually the individual LEDs are grouped on many different boards (just a few LEDs per group). Do a visual inspection looking for corrosion, or physically broken parts.

Off roading seems to be a bit tough on coils. I wonder if military grade would hold up better. The others will break in tough terrain soon. Maybe not. 🙃🤔

There is not a "mil spec" one per say. But Norcal did the right thing in ordering a AEC-Q*** listed part. It is about the best you will get for the automotive industry in general. They usually cost more, but if you work on anything automotive always look for that standard. :)
@barryg41
@barryg41 3 года назад
@@whodatdere1 hey thanks for that info. Totally ignorant on the auto spec. 👍
@whodatdere1

@@barryg41 I wouldn't blame ignorance at all! Been in the electronics industry over half my life (20 years) and only learned of the "automotive standard" by accident a couple years ago when I laughed at some overpriced capacitors and wondered what was special about AEC, now I know what to spec for some of those harsher jobs. In all reality most components will be satisfactory these days with due care and attention. After all, every electronic item needs a weakness. Can't generate revenue by only selling one to a person in a lifetime :P

What is the purpose of the inductors for driving led
@norcal715
@norcal715 2 года назад
The power supply is switch mode buck converter and the inductor absorbed the pulsed to smooth out the pulses to the LEDs
@WogChilli
@WogChilli 2 года назад
That makes sense, similar to electrolytic caps, though I suspect inductors are used over caps as they last longer?
