It is not ethical to shoot game at that distance. If the animal moves at the time of the shot wounding or missing begins. Time of flight over a second and the wind conditions can vary from the muzzle to the moose.
@MattBlomquist-wl9kk
@MattBlomquist-wl9kk 8 месяцев назад
Doubtful he would move bud. Your correct...1.3sec through the air. He was standing and listening so I knew he wouldn't move based on body language and watching this bull for roughly 30min. High BC 285 gr bullets do very well in the wind. With this load even a 10mph unseen gust at the end of flight would not push the bullet out of the kill box. Winds were nonexistent when I took this shot. As you can see it was overcast with stable conditions. If the wind was whipping you may have 1/2 an argument but could still be accounted for pretty easy. I would have to be able to read wind within 5mph...not too tough with decent gear... I practiced at nearly 1 mile with heavy crosswinds...under different conditions and can put loads inside a 10"X10" box with a cold bore. I learned my load in the wind and what kind of performance it has. Only when you can do this consistently should you attempt 1000yds on a live animal. I get why you guys come to the "unethical"argument...but...you didn't see the first 20 chapters leading to this short video.

@@MattBlomquist-wl9kk I am not your bud. Do whatever you want. An animal can easily move enough in tof to make the hit outside the kill zone. It would be possible to kill a moose at 1 mile so maybe that should be next.

@meateater1573
@meateater1573 8 месяцев назад
@@MattBlomquist-wl9kk Punk. A 9mm has killed a grizzly before. A 9mm would kill a moose if you hit it in the heart. 1. Animals are animals, not expendable targets. Wounding an animal is unethical and a waste of a valuable resource. If long-range shooting is your game, why not shoot steel targets that give off a gong when you hit any part of them, and not game animals that run off and die a lingering death if you fail to hit them in the vitals? 2. Let's face it, hunters don’t have the luxury of the perfect benchrest, and having an absolutely stable rest is critical for long-range accuracy. Animals are unpredictable and they often disappear before a perfect rest can be found or made. At long-range, even the contact points of the rifle upon the rest can affect point-of-impact (POA). If the rifle wobbles just a hair, forget about hitting a heart at 800 yards, therefore, single-point rests such as shooting sticks won’t cut it. 3. Shooting game raises adrenaline levels and the heart rate of most hunters-it’s part of the fun. But when heart rate is elevated, the body changes. The pupils dilate, worsening long-range vision. The hands get clammy-minutiae movements like that of a trigger pull are tougher to control. Mainly, a heightened pulse can affect muzzle shake. If you fail to account for these variables when shooting at game, vitals will likely be missed. Target shooters often speak of long-range accuracy in terms of sheer mathematics and environmental conditions, and fail to account for this absolutely critical variable: the human condition. 4. In hunting conditions where natural terrain features such as hills, canyons, trees and mountains are present, the wind at the rifle is often different than halfway to the target, which is often different from the wind at the target. If the shooter fails to recognize and account for any of these winds, he will miss vitals. 5. What separates true snipers from long-range enthusiasts is that the former can read the wind, make the corrections and hit their target on the first shot, or from a cold bore. Recreational riflemen, however, often “walk-in” rounds to their long-range target on a range. Average riflemen can do this, because the shot’s specific conditions and its effect on the bullet are learned by trial and error, and not read beforehand. It takes snipers years of experience to read the wind accurately, so don’t think you’re ready for taking a crazy-long shot at an animal just because you began hitting the gong at 1,000 yards one day at the range after multiple shots. What’s more, group size means little for hunters. What means everything, however, is your rifle’s cold-bore Inside 400 to 500 yards, it’s not a huge deal. If you don’t know your cold-bore zero for ranges beyond that, you’re just slinging lead. 6. Hunting isn’t war. In battle, a miscalculation or shooting error often leads to a wounded enemy. In war, wounded enemies are good. But game animals aren’t our enemies. Also, consider that a 165-grain bullet from a .308 Win., for example, drops below 1,000 ft.-lbs. energy-often considered the minimum energy threshold for killing big game cleanly-at around 550 yards. At 800 yards, it’s closer to 600 ft.-lbs. A wounded animal can’t be tagged (so no money goes to conservation), it can’t provide meat and it can’t reproduce. It just suffers and dies. It’s horrible all around. 7. If you wound an animal at ultra-long-range, it’s often difficult to even locate the spot where the animal was standing when hit to begin tracking. At long-range, many times hunters think they missed the animal when in fact they hit it. This is because they were too far away to see or hear its reaction. So, considering the notable effort required in going to look for evidence of a hit, they write it off as a miss. This should turn any hunter’s stomach. Punk

Lol...im sure it has...you feel free and go after one with a 9mm if your capable...not me bud... You sound a little more informed than the average preachy jackal...not sure if you stayed up all night researching or not. 1. I am a hunter first, though, and use steel to hone and practice. I believe in the practicality of being a better shot and therfore a better hunter. Rifle and bow. While most you guys are hanging out drinking beer...I'm putting shots downrange. 2. Agreed and well said. After watching the shot placement again...what makes you think I'm shooting off sticks? I'm not shooting 150yds. Clearly...I'm shooting from a solid platform...not shooting sticks. 3. I have always gotten my adrenaline dump after the shot. Front end...strady and calm. If I'm not ready to shoot...I just don't shoot plain and simple. I know from experience when I'm ready to send it. 4. True. None were present as you can see. Reading wind is not an exact science and takes years to master. That's why you need to know the parameters of your bullet and how close you need to be on it with a given distance. Since no wind was present I only adjusted for spin drift. Even if I'm off 5mph I'm still killing that animal at that distance. 5. Agreed. I can put 3 shots inside a smart phone at this distance....with a cold bore making the first shot land perfect. What's my problem? 6. Agreed. My load at this distance is roughly 2180lbs. Plenty of energy and velocity for expansion for a humane kill. Nobody I know hunts the way you described...I'm sure they're out there...go get em. 7. I guess I still agree in principle...however as you can see...he was way out in the open with alot of glass on him. First time for me bumping into a fellow hunter who got offended at "bud". Trying to be civil in the beginning keeping it light and loose and somebody got triggered.Got some daddy issues going on or maybe your a Biden bot posing as a hunter. Could be neither and your just an ass. Either way...keep preaching to the choir bud...I think you might be changing my mind on this.

Great shot, however, questionable ethics. Wind being the biggest variable as one can’t determine wind accurately that far down range. Off by a little, even with a Lapua the animal is gut shot. This wouldn’t be posted if it was a questionable hit.

I’m sure you’ll have heard it before…..shooting distance like this for targets is one thing. For game, it’s reckless and irresponsible. Too many things can happen between the shot and impact - that’s not opinion, that’s fact. The mark of a great hunter is not over the horizon marksmanship. It’s the ability to engage game within 2-300yds and consistently deliver a one shot kill every time. You’ve obviously spent enough time at the range, and I commend you on that. It’s time to spend more time actually hunting. Don’t be lazy. Do the work. The game you hunt deserves it.

An understandable argument for sure...covers most hunters I would say...but not all. The 1% of hunters that understand fully what they are doing with their weapon are not covered in this argument. @MattBlomquist-wl9kk I'd say I can shoot just fine. I'm actually an archery hunter anyway. I pull 70lbs and won't take a shot over 50 yards when hunting. Just a rule. At the kind of range in the video the margin of error is just too great to send it. That's one of God's creatures and we are fortunate enough to be able to partake in harvesting one. It's not some haji that doesn't matter if he suffers. You should at least give a bit of a shit about the animal who's life you're taking. The whole meat in the freezer argument is getting old too. None of us are far from a butcher or unable to afford to buy meat. Hunting is a choice and is sporting, and there's nothing wrong with that. Just own it. My 2 cents.

as far as distance goes..i def not approving this in any way, you can call this perfect shots but they are based on 50/50 factor, anyone with years of hunting experience will say that, killing an animal is taking a life from him, and this must be done in quickest way possible with as low as possible risk of missing of what you actually trying to hit... moose is a big animal ,obviously third of its body is lungs alone so you can say its hard to miss, but let me tell you hitting a large bug on the way of those 960 yards can change its way drastically, so lets not chase the records and just respect of whats out there for us

So I guess I don't know what you are even talking about! Even at 200yds you need to be quiet...downwind..etc and not let him know you are there. In other words...if your a good hunter...you never give them a FAIR chance. It would mean showing yourself and running the animal off. It would mean shooting at a running animal and therefore make it impossible or unethical to shoot.It would mean going home empty handed more than likely...and make you a terrible unsuccessful hunter! Isn't it funny that it's always the guys complaining about long range hunting who haven't invested the incredible amount of time to learn long range ballistics, wind calling, mirage reading, bullet drops, interior, exterior and terminal ballistics, precision reloading, painstakingly accurate load development not to mention the incredible amount of money spent on good gear, custom builds, top quality optics such as spotters binos and scopes, lapua brass, good dies, presses, many range days conducting trial and error testing with powder and bullet combos, ballistics solvers, laser range finders, bag, bipod, dope log books, etc. I think the real problem with these guys who are complaining isn't about the actual long range hunting, it's about their own jealousy of not having the time, resources or money, or a combination of all 3 to do it themselves so they take a notch out of someone's else's passion, hobby, efforts and successes to try to compensate for their lack of ability(s) to do it themselves. All hunters and gun owners should be in this together, not casting stones at eachothers methods. "SO CALLED HUNTERS"...bullshit!. I've been hunting big game before most folks on this page were sperm. That was a nice shot for sure. The problem is a lot folks who take those shots don't pull it off and the animal ends up wounded, gut shot or worse. If you think todays firearms, scopes, range finders, etc are going to bail you out you're wrong. Talk to some of Africa's PH or pro guides in Alaska and elsewhere. Most folks they take out on a hunt couldn't hit a barn door at 500 yards. But they show up with the latest caliber and start launching shots. I'm a pretty damn good shot and load my own so I know where they print. I wouldn't have taken that shot. Everyone can do what they want but sooner or later you're going to wound animals if you keep it up. Learn to hunt first. For Christ sake it's a moose not a Antelope or Bighorn. If you take your time you can walk to within 100 yards before they get suspicious. Move in as close as you can before taking a shot next time.

There's all kinds of folks calling themselves "Hunters". Means nothing. This excessive long range BS is no better than Uncle Bob emptying a lever action 30-30 at 50 yards on a deer drive and gut shooting his deer. Hunters need to police their own,,, and this isn't hunting. How many Videos have you seen posted where these shots are misses or worse yet the animal is clearly wounded and never found? I'll answer that for you,,, NONE. They harvested this animal and it was a quick kill but I'll argue all day that this is the exception. Then you get Uncle Bob watching these videos and attempting the same thing with zero chance of success.

All I'm hearing I think is some maybe some jealousy mixed with a lack of empathy and understanding. Whether you shoot an animal at 300 or 1000...you are by definition hunting. Had that animal popped out at 50 I would have shot him...i think most guys would. In either case the freezer got filled. The question is can a person do it with precision and not just wound an animal. I get plenty of bow hunts throughout the year and I think frankly that anybody who uses a firearm has an unfair advantage on their quarry. When your hunting with any weapon, my philosophy is simple... Practice as far as you can to find your outer personal limits. Mine happens to be 1500yds with a rifle and 140 with a bow. Peel back some yardage, and that's the distance you will be confident in while hunting. My max bow range might be 80-90 based on the situation and animal. Your way of hunting is understandable, but by no means do you get to decide if mine is out of line. I guarantee you...if you had the hardware and the ability and confidence... you would have squeezed one off too if you were given the same opportunity. The problem is...not many people have the ability or the stubborn nature needed to be proficient at that distance. It takes alot of work and sacrifice to be a good shot out that far...years of work as a shooter. For your average weekend warrior...it's probably not going to happen in their lifetime.

@bronco5334
@bronco5334 7 месяцев назад
Bullshit. It's unethical because the delay between the trigger break and bullet impact is so long that the animal can easily move enough to make it a long, agonizing death instead of a clean kill; in the 3 seconds time-of-flight (during which the shooter has no control over what happens), the animal can easily move far enough to make it an outright clean miss. And at that distance, the retained energy on the bullet is about what a .44 magnum has at 25m; it's really not enough energy for reliable expansion. I'm a long-range marksmanship competitor; I can easily make that shot... but still know it would be unethical to choose to take that shot on a game animal.
@tballs7619

@@MattBlomquist-wl9kk Now, since you want to (fail) to call out my understanding of ballistics: I'm curious what magical bullet you used that gave you the speed and energy at 960yd you claim. Because those numbers don't jive. I'll grant you my estimate of TOF was a rough estimate; without knowing at least BC, MV, and density altitude, I can't CALCULATE it, so I just "one-potato'd" it from the video. But since you have cited your impact data, I want to see you back it up with a real cartridge. And I don't think you can. Because even the best BC, solid copper bullets in .338 don't make the numbers you're claiming. A Barnes 210 TTSX-BT can only be pushed to 3211fps at the muzzle, and that will degrade to 1577fps and 1160 ft-lb by 950 yards. To retain your claimed 1900fps residual, you'd either have to push the bullet EVEN FASTER (can't be done, this is already a compressed load), use a lighter bullet with better BC (unlikely; the all-copper bullets give better BC than lead-core at same weight, so going lighter is just going to reduce BC), or a heavier bullet with a disproportionately superior BC (again, unlikely). At the LIGHT end of the spectrum, there's the 160gn TTSX flat-base. Screams out the muzzle at 3694fps, but at 950 yards, is only 1363fps and 623 ft-lb Slightly heavier, better BC, there is the 185 TTSX-BT, which can be pushed to 3431fps at the muzzle, but retains only 1363fps and 660 ft-lb at 950 yards At a heavier weight, the 250gn LRX-BT has an excellent 0.602 BC, and can be loaded up to 2897 fps. This will retain 1625 fps and 1465 ft-lb at 950 yards Or you could go with something really heavy, like the 280gn LRX, with 0.667 BC. Nice slippery bullet, good velocity retention. Cartridge can push it 2702fps at max load. This is your best bet for extreme long range. ...but it only gives you 1588fps and 1567 ft-lb retained at 950 yards. So, hey, just what magical bullet are you using that is retaining "2361ft lbs of energy and over 1900 fps" at 960 yards? Because according to the loading data and ballistics calculators, you're claiming 150% of the best possible retained energy, and 120% of the best possible retained velocity that any .338 LM cartridge can turn in. I'm curious what altitude you were at, that air resistance would be so much lower than standard calculated values.

@@MattBlomquist-wl9kk only a lazy-ass shoots an animal from that far away, risking injuring an animal unnecessarily, then laughs about it. That’s not hunting. Wrap it around whatever bullshit you want to.

And don't you dare laugh when it finally comes together. Just stay completely stoic during your adrenaline dump. Only real hunters don't get adrenaline after a clean kill. Real hunters get crocodile tears and virtue signal to complete strangers on RU-vid. Give me a break. Bunch of sissy so called men who are more fragile than most woman.

A hunter does not shoot so far at an animal . Did you shoot FMJ? First shot on a bad angle.

For every comment claiming long range shots are unethical there is a noob that commits a warcrime on a deer because they can't hit vitals at 20 feet.

I wonder, did he make the shot to eat, or was it for a head on a wall & or "bragging rights"? One is acceptable, and the other reckless, wasteful, disgraceful.

Bunch of jealous people trying to put this video down. Great shooting and some people need to relax, not every hunter is a phony prayer saying, crocodile teared eye poser. Laughing is absolutely fine in my opinion 👍

Here is what I would ask these people to try if they dare take a challenge. 1. Get an out of state tag where you pay non refundable money and only have about a 4%-5% chance of drawing. 2. Research your quarry and figure out how rare the animal is that needs to be legal to take. This bull had to be 50" wide or 4 brow tines on 1 side. 3. Understand you need to be proficient at any distance in this ground. These animals aren't everywhere and could pop out for just a short time. You need to make the most of it. 4. Develop a load you can trust. This will cost your pocketbook and your marriage if you have a significant other. It's a deep dark rabbit hole that will rob your checking and your time. 5. Practice practice practice. When the moment comes you need to be confident in your ability. Shoot out to 1500yds if you want to be proficient at 1000yds. It needs to be subconscious and reactive. You won't have a clear head when the moment comes so your body needs to know what to do when you can't think strait. 6. Apparently when it does come together by some miracle...remain as stoic as possible. No high fives or laughter. You wouldn't want some ignorant jackal to miss interpret your laughter as disrespect instead of adrenaline, disbeleif, and relief it was a good ethical shot from a ridiculous extreme distance. I bet anyone who has the guts and backbone to accomplish this kind of shooting...in this ground...under these circumstances...will squeal like a school girl when it comes together finally after all the hard work and obstacles. Good luck and I tip my hat to those supporting this video. Thanks for your interest.

As a Hunter myself, and been with "young" Hunters, that is more a NERVOUS laugh than a "funny/joke" laugh! A nervous laugh of relieve and I can vouch that the Hunter did "shed a tear" of relieve aswell!!!
