I prefer having to remove the wheel, wheel liner, right side engine mount bolts, having to jack the engine up a little, only being able to barely finagle the compressor out in a very specific manner (having to rotate it 180 degrees first, obviously), then getting the new one in, unsure if you messed up a gasket/seal in the process, and then you try to jam R134A (the cans with leak stop of course) into it, having no knowledge of AC systems or how they work, finally learning that you forgot to remove the plastic protective plugs that prevent debris from getting inside the compressor (after you take it to a shop to do the job for you).

Search for 1974 Oldsmobile Cutlass. Look for an image of a restored one showing the engine. Note the vast amount of unused empty space under that hood. Seven of the eight spark plugs are easy to reach.The eighth was under the AC compressor, and people complained loudly.

I had a 99 4 cylinder manual, 2wd Sonoma. It was a dependable truck that gave me 300k miles. The engine and clutch were original and still going strong. It lost the battle to rust in 2013. It was a great vehicle.

I still drive an old 98 but a blazer 4 door. I put in a AC compressor last summer but also replaced the orifice and receiver dryer. I couldn’t believe how dirty the old one was. So I replaced what I could and flushed the system out and I couldn’t believe how cold the air out was! Late 60s and still love working on cars. 👍🏻

I had 3 of these babies. 95, 4 banger , manual. One of the best trks I owned. Taught my kids to drive stick in it. Back when it was somewhat ok to let them drive on frozen lake. Later, a 2000 V6 4.3. And a Crew cab 4 door. To me, one of the best little pickups ever.

I had a bit of a unique one - 87 s-10 2.4 - but Auto and the guy that owned before me added AC to it. apparently he flat towed behind a motorhome. great truck, and I added a heavy front sway bar to it, handled like a go kart. drove back and forth to college before paint fade and body rot started to get it - sold it - and the next owner literally drove it till the doors were see thru. that little 2.5 was bullet proof.

Great video! It's nice to have a job on a vehicle from "the good old days" once in a while. No scan tool, no "refrigerant leak so the radio, climate control, cell phone interface console has been disabled" nonsense, and it would be very unlikely that it could drive itself to the nearest EPA location to report the owner for contaminating the environment.

Best vehicle for your money in my opinion. My 2000 2.2 5 sp has 304k and running strong. Bought it 8 years ago for $800 needed a clutch. 160k later i have about $2500 total invested in it. Thinking that is about 3 months new vehicle payment lol. I rather have a nice house than a fancy truck that sucks your money.

I love your videos! Thank you so much. I was working on my brother's 2014 Miata with 9,000 miles, and I thought it had a bad A/C compressor bearing, so I bought another A/C clutch. Successfully installed it, started the car, and sent the clutch into low Earth orbit. Turned out the A/C compressor was seized up. Realizing I was completely out of my league, I sent it to my mechanic who does not have a You Tube channel, and he installed a new A/C clutch, and a new fan. The electric fan literally melted, causing the compressor to seize up. Live and learn. Thank you for giving me the courage to try.

This video made me really happy. I changed out the compressor on my 1987 car and the forum police raked me over the coals for 1)Not replacing the receiver/dryer again which I had just done 2 years prior and 2)Not flushing the entire system first because of "all the metal shards that were surely in the system from the last compressor". Whew, it was sure a close one but I survived and so did the car. Still running after 5 years.

Yes, I think it depends on the underlying cause. In this case it was a seal failure, not a mechanical compressor failure, so Eric made the reasonable decision not to charge more and replace more. It also was not completely exposed to ambient air and water vapor. New condensers have passages that are so fine, fragments of the pump can lodge there and in a genuine compressor failure many replace that, too. It's a confusing topic because when the compressor grenades the usual approach is to replace all the seals, the accumulator, flush it out with nitrogen gas, then do a long deep vacuum to boil off any occult water. I remember getting lectures from the forum police, but Eric has street cred so those guys usually defer to a pro who does this every day for a living. Now that professionals dominate the RU-vid landscape the keyboard warriors have calmed down.

Just put a new compressor in my son's 2000 Silverado. Original compressor with 240k and 24 years on it. Bought Genuine GM from Rock Auto. Made in the US of A. Denso. Original compressor also a Denso from Japan.

Nice truck! I love these little S10’s. My son and I own a red 2000 s10 single cab, 4 cylinder , 5 speed, manual locks and windows. They are tough trucks. It is our shop truck used for junkyard trips, garbage hauling, or lawnmower hauling. GM really built a sweet little truck back in the day. All our “ new “ parts for it come from the U-Auto-pullit! We just installed a mint , GM bed liner for a whole $25. Plenty of torque, and reliable. So shocked to see one in this condition in the PRNY! Keep up the good work!

To an extent. When someone comes to me with ebay or $20 offbrand parts I tell them to go elsewhere. Why? Because it either won't fit or they'll be back in 2 months for free warranty work.

2 years ago, I had to replace the compressor on my Ranger for the same reason: leaking oil. I thought I could get away with replacing just the compressor like you did. But when I pulled the orifice tube, I found it was covered in metal shavings. So I did a total A/C overhaul: new condenser, accumulator, orifice tube, flushed lines and evaporator, and of course, new compressor. Moral of the story: always check the orifice tube even if the compressor is still working

yeah, oil accumulates and sits in the compressor, if it's leaking and someone keep adding charge, it quickly runs the system out of oil. we all know how well things work without lubrication :)

I had the '84 S-10 Blazer with the 2.8L. It was too much trouble: not enough power to pass, oil leaks, ignition issues, body panel separation, paint fading. Sold it after 4 years. Lesson learned: No more GM junk. Toyota forever.

Eric, I'll never forget when I turned you on to Ranshu. You were crying about trying to find a compressor for a Mitsubishi and I said: "Eric have you tried Ranshu?" to which you replied "Who's Ranshu. " I said look in any copy of Motor Age they have four page ads printed on PINK PAPER right in the middle of the magazine where the staples are telling you they have any compressor made. I sort of miss our interactions. You were fun. Wonder where you're pal Pete with Advance Auto is now. Rock Auto fixed his problem.

Nice original truck. I'm very familiar with that compressor since I own two 98 full size chevy trucks that use the same compressor. When I re-did the AC systems on both trucks, I did not use HT6 compressors because of how often they leak where the two halves join. On my K1500 truck, I used a Seltec Valeo compressor that has a one-piece body and it's been on the truck since 2007 and the AC still blows very cold. On the K3500 truck, I used a Sanden compressor also with a one-piece body and it's been on the truck since 2009 or 2010 and is still very cold. For warranty purposes for both compressors, I had to replace both the accumulator and orifice tube on both trucks. I was taught to replace both of those things anyway any time you replaced a compressor.

Don't believe all the hype. It's certainly a nice to do especially if the system has been open to the elements for years. but for what little time this has been exposed to...nah. It's fine. If you cut an accumulator/dryer open to see inside, it'll make sense why it isn't necessary. Even in instances where lets say a hose has a slow leak. Eventually you take in for service, they recover system. Replace part. Vacuum system, and charge. You wouldn't replace the dryer/accumulator. When its a car that's been sitting in the woods for a decade....yea, its time ha.

people do not answer you correctly. and the person who did give reply probably has never used a micron gauge either. That gauge will let you no when you pull a vacuum if it is dry after your vacuum pull. if you are interested in facts check out hvac school channel, i no they do residential ac but all hvac systems have a few things in common one is getting moisture out thats what kills ac systems. so if like he said you dont have to, only the use of that micron will let you no if its dry enough and not have to change it. the key is the use of that gauge that no one in our industry is using, sad days

Wish you were around a few years ago, learned quite a bit. Back then, had a CR-V with a bad compressor. Dealer wanted $$$$ to replace so I ordered a look-alike compressor from Ammazin. It was identical to the original in every way. Had all the tools except reservoir for old refrigerant but it was empty anyway. It even came packed with oil. Spent $300 total and had the car for two more years. Asked the dealer parts guy to show me the factory shipper box and it was ALSO identical to mine except for printing. I guess there's one BIG compressor plant in the PRC. Gr8 tip about the brake cleaner!

Love my 03 S-10 with the big 4.3. I bought it brand new and am less then 2000 miles away from the big 300,000. Stock engine, transmission and... AC compressor.

My son had a 2001 Chevy S10. Great little truck. Had to replace the front main seal, the intake manifold gasket, fuel injector spider and distributor. The oil pan bolts will loosen, torque those suckers down to factory spec before any are lost. We sold it with 265k on the clock and the guy that bought it was glad to get it. I got pretty good working on it while my kids were going through school.

Ahh the old Sten lol, i remember everyone and they brother had one with a rotted out bed in the 90s when I first started driving . I went with a ford ranger. That and the Tercel I had before it were practically indestructible. Don’t get that same feeling from anything I’ve owned since lol

My first truck was a brand new 1985 Chevy S-10. Had the "big 2.8L V6" auto trans. The rear axle was a highway ratio, so she got great fuel economy, but wouldn't pull a greasy string out of a cat's ass. I drove it 10 years and then passed it onto my daughter. Great, simple little truck.

Oooohhh, that's a nice S10. If that is all factory, then it is a ZQ8 package - lowered a little, better suspension and front and rear sway bars stock. Being that it is a 4.3L with a stick, then it also has the 8.5" rear axle (which is the same as the full size Silverados and such, just narrower), instead of the 7.5"/7.625" that comes in most of the S10's. Very nice !

I had a 1993 S-10 Tahoe with the big 2.8L. 5 speed. Lived in Rochester and Maine until I moved to PA. First time getting it inspected in PA, the mechanic said she’s rusty underneath.

Most of the AC compressors for newer GM applications that I've seen at work (dealership) come with 40 ml of oil in them (according to SI 😆). It's always neat to see an old survivor (usually someone's toy, not a daily driver) come to the shop.

A large portion of the planet wouldn't be able to drive that thing with the stick shift. I tried to teach my wife how one time, but it was a lost cause, and I took pity on the poor car! 😬 My dad thought it was funny when I stalled the engine a couple of times when I first started learning, but I got the hang of it pretty quick.

Believe it or not,most of the rest of the Globe,does NOT use automatic transmissions...As in USA do not use the manual ...It's the same,but the opposite..

Not really, most other places in the world dont have automatics. It takes 5 mins to learn how to drive a car with a manual transmission...not a steep learning curve as driving a modern car vs a Model T.

Nice little truck! I have a 98 K1500 5.7 and S10 ZR2 5spd. Love both trucks. They don't see road too often anymore, unfortunately. The K1500 was my first vehicle. The S10 was my winter beater so it's not nearly this cherry, but I'll still never sell it.

A lot of these were made in the Linden, New Jersey GM plant back in the day. Used to live there. Plant closed down long while ago. Owned a 96 blazer 4 door as well with the 4.3 and it was very dependable vehicle.

I was taught when you opened up an A/C system for any reason, to replace the receiver dryer or what you called the accumulator. Especially if there was system leakage.

you are correct,maybe he is just doing a quick down dirty quick fix, maybe the customer could not afford a good repair. the only true car ac repair channel is tom lech, seems everybody is behind and untrained on how it is supposed to be done

@@user-iv2tu4wq7t yep we are not trained to be up to date on the hvac systems like we should be, after more study i have gotten way better, sometimes its up to the tech to go above and beyond and hunt for the correct knowledge. in 2yrs i went from what these guys are doing to a different level now from studying hvac. i always like learning and expanding my knowledge when you quit u may as well retire from it

I have a 96 GMC Jimmy with the 4.3 and well over 300,000 miles. I still have it because I want to put a plow on it. The rocker panels are pretty well shot. Living in northeast Wisconsin.

Drive a 99 Sonoma 4x4 as my daily. Pretty decent truck other than the cluster that has mind of its own. And yes, believe it or not the A/C still works after 190k!

I was gonna say those HT6 compressors were pre-programmed to explode at 85k but this one didn’t even make it that long. Mine was absolutely oozing lol.

I've got a '94 Sonoma 4.3 Vortec 5-Spd with 226k on it. Had it since I was 15 (I'm in my 30s). Wish GM still made trucks like this. Currently reading the Haynes Techbook on Brakes to figure out why the RF wheel locks up before all the others when braking. ABS module had thrown a bunch of codes, put another one in there. Fired the parts cannon at it since I didn't learn how to properly diagnose until watching your channel. Still figuring it out... As for the A/C compressor... Four Seasons reman was junk... just through an A/C bypass pulley on it. Picking up some crusher run gravel with it this afternoon! GM, bring the s-series back!!!

The ABS system on those vehicles are junk. Check you wheel speed sensor RF. The A/C compressors are known as belly leakers since the bracket does not support the middle of the compressor. Its best to go with a different style like Sanden made that does not join the two halves at the center

I have never owned a vehicle that had air conditioning, probably never will. Considering how much work and money you put into it, I am so grateful for living in a temperate climate in the UK ! I have however been in AC'd cars and have been grateful to get out of them. People overuse cooling and don't realise it is,in it's way,addictive.

I was always told that you should replace the accumulator/drier and orifice tube anytime you replace an A/C compressor. I'm getting ready to replace the A/C compressor on a 99 LS1 Camaro. I sure wish it was sitting right on top like that one. Unfortunately it is buried on the bottom passenger side with the hose connections on the back with the bolt holding it on very difficult to get to.
