For 1999-2004 mustangs, this video will show you how to make your own custom trunk lid liner. This is a fun project that you can do for less than 75 bucks to add a custom dress up touch to your mustang for the next car show. Plus it's just something to do if you are looking for a weekend mustang related project.
Materials List:
Wood ~ 10 dollars (2' x 4' 1/4" thick)
Fabric ~ 10 dollars (Wool-Smoke in color)
Extreme Velcro ~ 10 dollars
3M Spray Adhesive ~ 10 dollars (Number 80)
Foam ~ 12 dollars (Optional) (1/2" thick)
Logo ~ 20 dollars (Optional) (whatever you want in your trunk)
Tools:
Scissors
Jig Saw
Razor Blade or utility knife
Staple Gun
T-square
Clamps
Hands
Bullitt Logo Font Size 250: Broadway (With custom "B")

Thanks for the great feedback, there does appear to be some interest in me making these. You are correct that I could crank these out. I just wouldn't feel good about charging people as much as it would take to make it a profitable business.

Thanks for the great feedback, and good luck on your project. If you take your car to shows, a hand made one of a kind liner like this sets you appart. Other mustang nuts and the judges usually ask me where I bought it.

Thanks for the feedback, yes that is 1/4" plywood, the velcro is tough stuff, you should staple the velcro to the plywood (left that step out of the vid). It is possible that your subs could rumble the velcro apart but there is only one way to find out. Good luck man, I would love to see your bass test!

A fabric store. Pretty much all of them will have it, I got a few small samples and tested them against the trunk material before deciding on the smoke color. Amazon has a link to an online fabric store too, product there is called "Smoke Gray Wool Felt". Good luck.

The fabric was called smoke wool, check with a fabric store near you and ask for help, hopefully they will be able to hook you up.

Search for embroidery shops in your area, if you have a Bullitt the font was called Broadway, but the B in Bullitt had to be handmade. I took in a rubbing from the kick plate in my car so we could make sure the font turned out perfectly. The lettering in mine was done using vinyl iron on lettering like you see on tee shirts (only thicker), it worked very well for me and was less expensive than embroidery, though embroidery would have been cool too.

I am starting to think I should start making and selling these, but sorry to say that no I didn't plan to turn this into a product/business so I don't have a way to sell them and wouldn't even know what to charge. My goal was to show other mustang owners how to duplicate it if they liked the idea. I am honored that you would want me to make one for you though.

I haven't used mirror inserts, but I have seen others who have used plexi (easier to cut) and they do look good.

It came out great. Can't get the Velcro to keep it up there. Every couple of time opening the trunk it on floor. I put 4 feet worth on there. The only fun part was wrapping it in fabric. I

I had that done at an embroidery shop, originally I was going to have them embroider the logo on the material, but that proved to be too expensive (more than 100). I liked the vinyl lettering though and it was much more affordable at 20 dollars.

Sorry to hear this man, I really have to work to tear mine down from the trunk lid, I used "Velcro Extreme Tape", you can find it on amazon, or the home depot. If that's the same stuff you used, I am not sure what's up.

Glue is fine. Stapled it like you said below. Its the Velcro itself. I bought industrial strength. I think I might have to screw it on. :(

Font is size 250 in MS word, the font style is Broadway with a customized B to match the logo.

I think you should add up material is which you said was 80 buck and add 10 - 15 bucks for every hour it takes to build and then charge that amount for one so im trying to say sell them from 100-120 apiece if u wanna make money

great job! not sure how i got here, but that is amazing. looks factory. only thing that could make it different or better would be if you embroidered it but no point in spending that money for something in the trunk.

Hey I hope this hadn’t been asked yet I see a ton of comments. If you were going to make one of these to mount storage to, like the covercraft ones available, how much thicker do you think you could get the plywood to bear the weight while not getting in the way of closing the trunk?

Im wondering if this would work with the underside of the hood too? Either to just put over the grey heat absorber thing under the hood (cant think of the name of it lol) for car shows or to leave it there permanently

I would not recommend a DIY hood liner. It get's hot under there. 3M does make a spray adhesive that can take the high heat, but I would be very careful about the materials you choose to put in your engine compartment.

Is the Velcro glue failing or the Velcro itself isn't holding? If the glue isn't sticking to the liner you made, try stapling the Velcro to the liner.

I'm going to do this with my 01 cobra but going to look into finding a better way to attach it. Do you know how the that you can buy attach? I wonder If I could use them push pins that you use for attaching panels? Either way I'm saving this video it turned out well.

Hey Auto DIY, how is the longevity of your trunk lid mat holding up? I decided to make one for my 04 Cobra after watching your video. I had to do several revisions while making it, I couldn't find the same fabric locally. After issues with glue bleeding through, and the vinyl letters not sticking (girlfriend does made them) I finally got it made and it looks amazing! Only issue now is getting the velcro to stick to it. I will try the staple idea next, just seen that in the comments. Awesome video btw, I'm glad I did this. Does your velcro still hold after this many years?

+Arct1czer0 That extreme Velcro stuff is super strong, the Velcro's adhesive on the wood just didn't want to hold when the sun warmed it up. After stapling the Velcro to the liner it hasn't budged. It is a big hit at car shows as I am sure yours will be. Thanks for posting your feedback.

I was going to send you to Gonzo who runs a 1 man hood liner shop, hoodliners dot net, evidently he is battling a serious illness right now and has put his business on hold. Sadly I don't have another recommendation for you. Hopefully he is out of the woods soon and back in action.

Great video!!! I already have my cardboard template made but I just have a couple questions. First one is referring to the bottom corner on the drivers side. There is a notch cut out for the wire harness on the wood template yet you can't see it after the foam and wool is on it. Did you have to do something special to cover that area or did you just wrap the fabric over it like the rest of it? Reason I ask is because if it is just wrapped like the rest, wouldn't that corner sit a little higher because the wool that is wrapped around would be blocking that notch on the back side ( I hope this makes sense)? Second question. I'm assuming you used 1/4" staples?

Thank you for the kind comments and great questions. 1. Good eye, yes I notched the wood to get around the wire harness, but I did not notch the wool or foam, the depth of the wood with the forgiveness of the foam did a nice job of hiding the harness without having to compromise the uniformity of the cover. 2. Yes those are T50 1/4" 6mm staples. Good luck with your project, I hope you have a good time with it.
