A "slug weld," a Dutchman, "Mexican patch,".....whatever? I haven't seen one done with a steel nail. Usually, they are done with electrode stubs or bits of light Guage. They are totally great, unless it's a piping application that is going to have some serious heat or pressure in it. This is done all the time.

Use a thicker 7018 welding rod and break the flux off and cut to fit it in leaving a small space on either side for gap. Then use a 3/32" 7018 welding rod to tack it in place and clean up flux with a wire wheel, then use 3/32" 6010 rod to weld up the gap sides but watch your key hole, clean up flux with wire wheel. Use a 1/8" grinding wheel and gouge the original placement rod and then run a 1/8" 6010 welding rod to penetrate through the middle then clean up with wire wheel. Now switch to a 1/8" 7018 welding rod and weave a weld from edge to edge and remember to pause on the sides and faster through the center(to avoid build up in the center) Grind flush, 3-5 minutes. Or MIG inside of the edge using a side to side tack welding method(build up onto a tack over and over to the end) and then wire wheel to clean, then switch to flux core and run a weave from one end to the other. Grind to finish, 2-3 minutes. Or set vertically and run a MIG down hand from the top inside of the edge and then wire wheel to clean, then switch to flux core and run it up vertical. Grind to finish, 1-2 minutes. There a lot of ways to fix these holes, these were just some of them that I have used in the past. Never used a nail in a hole before though.

@philipwebb1104
@philipwebb1104 2 года назад
Like I said, there are a lot of ways to fix holes like these. Not everyone is comfortable with filling in holes. I used to do a lot of repairs and these were just some of them, also used the method you described. You can use gouging rod (flat to cover the back completely was my favorite) held in on the back of the weld and burn it in with the MIG or SMAW. Could also use TIG as it's more controlled and with a variable foot pedal you can have even more control. How about OxyAcetylene welding it would work as well. Pick your poison, I've used all the ones that I wrote about and yours but it comes down to which method is best for the Welder doing it.

The amount of "non welders" in this comment section is astounding lmao. You can literally fill this hole without even fucking using another electrode rod to fill in (no seriously, why would you? It's scientifically proven that doing this causes micro cracks and will fuck up the metal down to the atoms). Just fucking get MIG, run at 17 amps, and weave over it. OR if you have to use stick, a 3/32nd rod will do the trick same pattern weaving over the hole lmao. Jesus christ
