This is the last theater in Chinatown. I used to go to see movie when I was young and also watch the Chinese opera with my mom. This place looks great now! Great job!

Nice story and happy to see they revived and kept the name. It mainly featured Shaw Brothers movies and was operated by the Shaw family in its heyday. Watched countless movies there.

I love this place!! I grew up in the Ping Yuen on the same block and would go with my mom and friends every week to watch Chinese movies there. I thought this place closed down. I'm so glad to hear that it has been revitalized and is continuing to thrive. Thank you for reporting on this. I will have to go visit with my family of 6 soon. Such wonderful memories growing up in SF chinatown and coming to Great Star Movie Theater!!

I saw the Empire Strips Back last year and it was one of the best shows I had seen in a while! Absolutely recommend giving it a watch this summer when it comes back.

We used to go and hang out 50 cents for a double feature of Shaw Brothers kung fu movies. Thanks for saving the last Chinatown theater.

I am in my mid fifties. My parents use to take us to see movies on their dates. It was the whole family.

Wow, I came here with my family to watch movies as a kid. Rats were running on top of the seats, but people didn't care. I'm glad they renovated the place.

I remember going there and seeing trashy Hong Kong movies. It was great. It was also the place that launched the 1970s drag troop "The Cockets."

That's incorrect. The Cockettes performed at the Pagoda Palace Theatre at 1731 Powell Street which was demolished in 2013.

Have not been there since they closed in the late 90's. Times were different then, iykyk, and there was a few paranormal stories about this place, especially the bathroom and the back row wall before it was remodeled. If stories are true, would love to hear it from the people that it happened to.

Use to come here alot when I was a kid watching hk movie AND THE MIDNIGHT MOVIE RELEASE YOUNG AND DANGEROUS. AND ALL THE OTHER ONE. THAT WHEN BACK THAN ALL THE CHINATOWN OG UNDERWORLD COME OUT WATCHING MOVIE 🎉

Yeah, Chinatown is way underutilized at night. Basically, shuts down like Financial district with the exception of a few restaurants.

In May 2015, a 31-year-old woman was found dead inside the theater next to Harris Rosenbloom, a promoter for the theater who was leasing the building. He said that he fell asleep in the theater and discovered the woman's body upon waking up. He called 911 at 11:55am. Rosenbloom was initially investigated for murder, but due to a lack of evidence, he was not charged.

Great Star is not big enough. Shen Yun performs at the San Francisco War Memorial Opera House which seats 3,000 people.

This person of color would go see films here , eat at lucky creations, then go to see bands at the Mab, or On Broadway. Gentrification was non existent in Chinatown back then.
