9980XE Overclocking Stream Recap: Massive MORA3 Radiator

Our 9980XE overclocking livestream was a greater success than expected, with the 9980XE finally on high frequencies (and without sub-ambient!).
Ad: Buy an iBUYPOWER RDY PC (geni.us/qaA7kc3), Snowblind with LCD side panel now available
The Intel i9-9980XE's overclocking potential was a genuine disappointment in our initial review, but the upside was that the limitations were entirely thermal. We were hitting TjMax at high frequencies and voltages, something that was avoidable on the 7980XE by way of delidding and liquid metal. Unfortunately, for the 9980XE, core-to-core deltas were great enough that we had to stop short of our OC goals on the CPU. With a massive radiator from Watercool, we found a way to push a big overclock without resorting to sub-ambient cooling.

Could run an quite car fan on that (not norm noizy until you get the fan more then 50%) impressive radiator that has been made more specifically this time for a water cooling loop, always thought about picking up an actual car radiator would not bother with rear small fans (have them in front or rear not both, sure not different sized fans if you are going to do both ) having the fans in the back pulling air is better for easier cleaning dust remove standpoint (for this test doesn't matter)

I have had that exact radiator for 8 years. I use it to get 4.3Ghz out of my 8 year old hex core i7 980x. It also cools the water block on my X58 chip set "UD7 Gigabyte" motherboard. It's really good. I might add it sits behind my pc tower case on the floor.

The MO-RA3 is really nice. I have had it cooling my PC for more than 7 years now. Yes it is still being produced (I think it came out in 2010 or 2011, as an improvement over their previous MO-RA2), some good products don't really need a new version. They also have many variations of it. The base is either 420 or 360 (roughly the width and length of the fin area in mm) and each has different frame and fan plate versions. The cheapest is the "Core" version which does not have any extra frame or fan plates but still has 4x M4 screw threads on each side for fixing your own frame/fan project. I got the 420 Core (about 150 eur) in 2011 and currently have it hanging low on a wall about 1.5 meters right from my PC with 4x 200 mm very low RPM fans, so it is inaudible to where I'm sitting. My PC case is a DIY hardwood airtight cabinet and there are CPU and GPU blocks and a normal 360 radiator (3x 120 mm fans) in the loop. The internal radiator circulates air inside the cabinet, so it acts as a "reverse radiator" in that it cools the air and heats the water, taking care of all other heat from the components (except CPU and GPU). And so the external MO-RA3 dumps ALL the heat from the PC, and the PC will not get dust inside, and the wooden cabinet effectively blocks whatever noise is left from the fans, pump and PSU.
@avagreen9060
@avagreen9060 5 лет назад
What pump are you using for the loop? Is a single pump enough?
@B4Quattro
@B4Quattro 5 лет назад
@@avagreen9060 I use 2 Mo-Ra3 360 radiators and one 360 rad in my loop and use only one aquastream xt pump. at 3660 rpm (deadly quiet) the pump produces a flowrate of around 90 - 95 l/h.

@pev_
@pev_ 5 лет назад
Sorry, didn't notice your replies before. I also have a single pump, the Phobya DC12-400 (I have a reservoir from a very old Thermaltake kit that is perfect for this pump), and I even use a manual speed controller to slow it down (to extend life and lessen noise). A water cooling loop needs very little flow to cool well.
@phenomanII
@phenomanII 4 года назад
@@pev_ The first time I've ever seen a setup like that was when DIYPerks made a PC like that (big rad outside, small rad inside to cool the inside air). I am quite sensitive to coil whine so I wanted to make something like that but I kept seeing comments that it wouldn't work. Since you've been presumably running this way for a long time, may I ask if you'd recommend it? Are there any issues you came across/did you experience anything you'd consider useful knowledge for someone wanting to go this route? Do you have any fans inside the cabinet apart from ones on the radiator? (a fan pointed directly at the motherboard VRMs or something like that) My biggest worry is that the radiator inside can only slow down the temperature rise inside the case and that the concept ends up failing after a long time under load.

Also i use it completly passive until the water temperature has reached a certain delta to ambient and if i dont put a very long sustained workload on my pc the fans won't even turn on :D

I was considering the Mo-Ra when I was putting together my external loop earlier this year. I liked the side mounted reservoir, and the proper feet. However, the 9x140mm version I had my eye on (the one Steve has here) just felt too big, and I couldn't get all the matching parts at the time. I ended up with a Phobya Quad 480/560 and knocked together a mount. It sits under my desk with the fans blowing outward, so it's quite nice now that the weather has started getting cold again. I'm happy with the results but I still think about the Mo-Ra from time-to-time.

The Mo-Ra (Monster Radiator) is great, particularly for silent builds. If you look at the large amounts of space between the fins, it's designed for low air pressure - this'll easily cool a couple hundred watts with those big 200mm fans running at their minimum 330rpm setting, where they're functionally inaudible.

This seems like a very nice solution for cooling your computer when you live in areas with low outdoor temperatures. Just run the hoses outside and into that thing. Since it's outside, you don't need to worry about noise, so just hook it up with two huge box fans for a push/pull configuration and run them at full speed. That'd also allow you to have a very effective filter in front of the air-intake to avoid clogging up the radiator.

How large a radiator would you need to not need fans, provided ambient was controlled to say 23C?

MoRa 420 owner here. Steve... not 4x 140s, not 4x 120. You can fit 9x 140s on the MoRa 420 and 9x 120 on the MoRa 360 on one side. With push-pull you can fit 18x 140 on the MoRa 420 and 18x 120s on the MoRa 360.

I want one of these radiators. I run a 7980XE at 4.8Ghz all (18) cores with 1.286 volts. And this is a little extra voltage that it even needs for AVX load stability. I also have G.Skill Trident Z Royal DDR4 4000Mhz CL15 4x8GB kit at 4,000Mhz CL15-16-16-30-1T-275 100% stable. Yes my CPU is delidded with LM. Very happy with my setup so far. I am considering direct die with standard thermal Paste.

I had the idea of stacking thermoelectric chips for efficiency/cooling power. you can buy generic waterblocks in various sizes and I had one picked out that could hold 8 peltiers side-by-side. Never got around to modding it into my gpus, but 100 watts into 48 chips made a pretty good miniature air conditioner.

why have the out on the top against gravity? wouldn't you get more flow if the output was on the bottom?
@pev_
@pev_ 5 лет назад
Argh, NO! In a closed loop it makes no difference how the loop goes. Also, if the "output" is on top, it is easier for air bubbles to exit the radiator.

Silently? a r6 fractal with 3x noctua a12x25 fans in the front, dialed in for max rpm before being audible. remove rear fan grille with dremel.

So if only you find space somehow for two of these radiators and you can basically cool a fairly high-end system entirely passively. Interesting. Insane, but interesting.

30 RPS would be 1800 RPM, and those fans have a max RPM of 800. It was just synced. Probably running at some divisible or multiple of 30 or 60.

that huge rad reminds me of another diy build some guy used a actual car rad and ofcourse modified it to work to passively cool his pc. i'm sure it was alot cheaper than that MORA3 rad tho
@pev_
@pev_ 5 лет назад
First, a car rad would require quite a lot of DIY to make robust and leakfree tubing adapters and fixing solutions, and second, to use a radiator that is designed for fans, for passive cooling is stupid, it will never work well. Yes, PC watercooling components sure have a premium in prices compared to full DIY "industrial" component solutions, but they sure are sleek and designed for the purpose.

Similar to the cooling setup I have on my system: an external radiator box with three triple-120mm radiators, so 9x120mm instead of 9x140mm. And Watercool is a great brand as well. I've used their GPU blocks (currently use AquaComputer kryographics) and I have the HeatKiller IV as well on my 5820k. And with the blocks I have plus the 9x120mm radiator space, my GPU (GTX 1070) just breaks 40C at a ~2100MHz with +500 on the memory. My system is currently down for maintenance and rebuild. But I changed out the thermal paste on the GPU from MX-4 to Thermal Grizzly's Hydronaut. Swapped out the thermal pads on the GPU for the Fujipoly as well, which should help with much better power delivery cooling. Meaning I might get a better overclock on the card. Or not. Also using Hydronaut on the CPU. I think I previously had the Icy Diamond on it instead of the MX-4, so that should really help temperatures. I auto-overclocked the CPU through the BIOS and it took it to 4.1GHz. So I might go with manual overclocking this time to see where I can get it.

Put hinges on the radiator and use it as a case door. Folds up. Radiator rests on the case when open. Had a friend do that close to 20 years ago. Huge, unwieldy, ridiculous and effective... back then.
