9eCn3 Dreamwave / Synthwave Mix No. 1 

This is something different for this channel, I know, so if you've been subscribed for a while then I owe you an explanation. I started getting into synthwave (or retrowave, or dreamwave, or whatever) in late 2019. Artists like The Midnight and Timecop1983 caught my ear with their wistful, melancholic, and romantic songwriting, and it didn't hurt that the music was really melodic and catchy! When the COVID-19 pandemic first hit my area in March 2020 and things more or less shut down, I found this style of music to be perfect on my nightly walks. The town I lived in, normally bustling with activity, showed few signs of life, and combined with the widespread uneasiness and uncertainty, it gave me quite a unique feeling: of dread, no doubt, but also a quiet appreciation of the solitude we'd been forced into. Things had just sort of "stopped," which was, in a way, what I had been yearning for at the time anyway, as my twenty-something-crisis was in full swing. The "mono no aware" aesthetic commonly associated with synthwave was really amplified, and I couldn't stop dreaming of better (or were they just more innocent?) times. Since then, synthwave has become one of my favorite genres, though I really gravitate towards the type featured in this mix: mid-tempo beats with simple chord progressions and huge, shimmering synths. It makes me long for the way things used to be (whatever that may be) as well as appreciate what's around me now as I navigate new relationships and new situations in my life. As with any type of music we really love, I just identify with it. There's plenty more where this came from, and I'll probably be making a couple more mixes like this one in the near future.
