Great video Jose. Thanks for the time put into providing such a thorough explanation. Concerning the torque converter, if the fluid is draining too slowly, starting and immediately stopping the engine will cause the fluid to come gushing out. You will have to line up the opening again to replace the drain plug.

If you do a regular change of the transmission oil there is no reason to change the oil out of torque converter.or even do a flush. Actually MB recommend not to do it for a couple of reasons ,also by $ 40 a Quart it is saving you money Great Video I just did it on my 2017 GLS the 2 rear screws are a little different to reach but also blocked by a big bracket MB don't makes it easy to work on their cars

Thank you so much for your comment. I really don’t feel comfortable leaving the oil in the converter. You do this oils change every 60k so why not go a little further and changing what is in the converter. German engineering is very complex but it’s also the best when it comes to cars. So yeah they don’t really make it easy for anything. I’m glad my video was helpful.

Great video! Just to confirm, you don’t need to cycle through the gears after filling and waiting for temp to reach 39 degrees, correct? Also, on a 9g tronic MCT (AMG only) w/o torque converter, does the 9 liters drain from just the pan or somewhere else after draining from the pan? Does anyone know?
@josecitomarin
@josecitomarin Год назад
Thank you Artur for your comment. There is no need for cycle. I took 9 liters out and I put a little over 9 liters back, so I am very comfortable with it. I do not think it makes a difference to cycle through gears. I don’t like the idea of running it dry even though it would only be for a fraction of time and not completely dry. Another reason I am comfortable with it is that I change the oil before time and not after. With the MTC. I have not done one my self, but the way I have seen it done is that (and it might sound silly) you drain the oil from the pan and from the cooler hoses two times. On the first change the oil that is left will mix with the new oil and when you do the second oil change you will have much better, cleaner oil in the trans. Now, with this procedure, you run the engine after you have changed the first time (wet trans), go through gears so you can get all of the oil moving throughout the entire system, get up to operating temperature, let it run for a few minutes and then flush again. If you do it your self it doesn’t cost you much. And since you do not do this service all the time is not too much of a pain. The car is already up and ready. I would also have the car warmed up before I do even the first change. Bring the car up to operating temperature, and let it cool off for a few minutes. Wear gloves so you don’t burn yourself.

I don't have a scanner to measure the temperature to measure the fluid level, does anyone know the way to check the temperature without having the scanner on 9 speed automatic transmission? On my old mercedes 2014 ML350 the ATF oil pan is metal and it doesn't require to change the whole pan but only the gasket when it comes to ATF service...I usually check the temp through my laser temperature tool by pointing it to the ATF pan while the engine is running. It reads the temp without having to use the scanner, but since the 9 speed comes with plastic ATF pan my laser tool probably won't read the temp correctly through the plastic pan, though I have not tried it yet, if anyone have an idea about this please help answer my question. I appreciate in advance for your time
@josecitomarin
@josecitomarin 3 месяца назад
Thank you so much for sharing. You can simply get the small scanner from Amazon for $25 and you connect it to your phone. If not your laser tool will work. Just go up a little higher in the transmission to the metal. In my video I showed how the $25 scanner works perfectly
@TerenceThorley
@TerenceThorley Год назад
I thought the rest of the oil was in the transmission oil cooler that has a feed via the two pipes that come from the transmission housing, to drain this you have to run the engine to operate the oil pump with the return pipe disconnected and add and drain a litre at a time? ( 4.5 litre in the transmission and 4.5 litre in the oil radiator ) You say you got 4.5 litre out of the torque convertor, was this also coming from the transmission oil cooler?
@josecitomarin
@josecitomarin Год назад
Hi. Thank you so much for watching my video and commenting on it. The amount of oil that is held in the radiator is very little. It doesn’t make a difference. There are people that don’t even drain the torque converter. I got 9 liters out and I put just a little more then 9 in. And that is what the 9g-Tronic trans (with all its components) on this car calls for. As you mentioned, some of the oil from the lines may already come out from the torque converter, but what is being held is not a significant amount to make a difference on the operation of the transmission or the lifespan of it. So I am not really worried about it.

hi am i right in hearing that 9litres of oil are needed to do this? i heard about people doing a flush. i.e dropping everything out the pan about 4 litres doing a flush then doing again with new pan and oil about 4.5 litres. your method has 9litres in one go by draining the the torque converter direct. which seems better tbf as is all the oil in one go rather than leaving half in and being contaminated. im currently on 61k mikes and 7years on a s213 model.

@josecitomarin I used the original pan and filter because I ordered the wrong filter and gasket online based on their confirmation that our transmission was a 2018 c300 with a 729 transmission. All the videos I watched on 2018 C300 showed the pan with 6 bolts and a separate filter, reusable pan. Once I got under the car, shock and awe struck me and I panicked because I didn't have the proper tools to refill the pan and had to Amazon 1 day order them for $20. So, I spent an extra $90 for no reason. But, I got it done. And, I found the fluid for $8.39 a liter and ordered 10. So, I have 5 for next time and will just order a new pan at 100k miles.

I can't understand the reason why someone would service the 9g automatic transmission at his house. You buy a car like a mercedes, and you know that you will need money for maintenance, right? I am also a mechanic and I have the E300de, but I am taking it to the Mercedes dealership so that I have all the guarantees because I paid 110,000 euros for its acquisition. and as you know, the specific automatic transmission has enormous technology and a mistake might turn out to be fatal...!!! you are a good engineer and great video. my knowledge is to go to an official car repair shop so that we can have peace of mind... as long as you have money of course..thanks!,🙏🏼
@josecitomarin
@josecitomarin 3 месяца назад
Thank you so much for your comment. I am actually doing this as a hobby, I am not a mechanic, or I guess you could say I am, lol. I have been taking care of my cars for like 20 years. I just don’t see why you couldn’t drive a luxurious car and pay the same money for it (used of course) that you would pay for a regular car and drive in style. I really don’t see the difference in doing the trans service on a 9G transmission from a Mercedes or Nissan than on a regular Chevrolet transmission where you follow the same kind of procedure. You are right in all the electronics and craziness involved, but as long as you do it correctly and follow procedure you should be okay. So I don’t think you need to have the money to pay for the maintenance, if you can do it yourself, after all the procedures are the same as in any other vehicle. Plus, you don’t do this kind of service on a 110,000 euro Mercedes you are doing it on a 15k or 20k euro Mercedes after 60k miles when the factory warranty is done. The trans service where I live is $1400. I spent $300. Thank you so much for watching my videos. I appreciate you taking the time and writing your comment. We need to have this conversations so people could really see the pros and cons. Hope to hear more from you in this or any of my other videos.
