I am the same why Simon. 9mm filtered pipes make me able to smoke all blends bite free. We are all unique and whether we prefer a filter shouldn’t be criticized. A pipe without a filter is directing more concentrated hot smoke through a small draft hole into your mouth and tongue. A cigar has a much wider area for the smoke to travel thru and hence cool down before it reaches your mouth. That’s my take👍🏼

I get irritation from the smoke of a cigar. Not sure if irritated gums and tongue are the same as tongue bite. I still like flavor better with filter. I don’t really appreciate being told I don’t know how to smoke a pipe and that’s why I must smoke filter. But if I didn’t need to, I enjoy the flavor better so I would anyway. Great chat

You make some really good points Simon. I use filters about 40% of the time - for me they offer a very pleasant alternative and add to the variety in the pleasure of pipe smoking. As you say there is no need for polarisation on the issue. I'd encourage all pipe smokers to give them a try. I once read a very interesting article on the role of the cigarette filter - the purpose there is to regulate the amount of nicotine level to provide a consistent nicotine hit across the lung when the smoke is inhaled. Best, Paul

I am now committed to 9mm filters unless the pipe is a meerschaum. I do it because I am a wet smoker and tend to gurgle. Tongue bite has never been an issue for me.

I love 9mm with aero blends no matter how properly I smoke my pipes aero's bite. I would prefer to enjoy all blends not pigeon hole myself to one type of blend.

Tongue bite IMO is caused by moisture and even though the filters were designed for tar and nicotine it does trap moisture if you notice when you smoke certain tobaccos the filter will get very wet and your tongue starts to take the hit and before long your hitting. I looked into this from many angles and I believe all tongues are not created equal I believe some can tolerate more than others it's much more than meets the eye going on I tried many many times smoking a pipe without a filter and I can never get by without tongue bite.

After smoking pipes on an off for about 9 years and as an avid cigar smoker i am starting to realize i am one with a sensitive tongue for especially virginias in a briar pipe no matter how slow i smoke and no matter how dry the tobacco is and how i pack it. If i smoke english in a cob i have best results but even then i can get slight irritation if im not extremely careful how i smoke. I do recall way back using savinelli balsa in my cob with great affect but have forgotten about them. Killed my tongue with virginia last week and now extremely interested in trying a 9mm charcoal briar pipe. I dont even smoke my briars much since my cobs smoke so much better.

Never liked 9mm filters until I tried one. It was a eureka moment. A filter can definitely reduce the bite potential BUT you can definitely get bit, still. Now I have difficulty smoking an unfiltered pipe, mostly for the massive reduction in moisture. Not sure what to say other than they make the smoke more enjoyable. So funny, how our tastes and habits in piping can evolve over time...

I pretty much always use 9mm and anytime I'm smoking a pipe that's not 9mm it's a 6mm. I tend to smoke kind of fast so the filters really help me to keep from getting bitten.

I always use a charcoal filter especially with a bright virginia tobacco that always gave me tongue bite and still does without a filter, I’m not qualified to say why this was so except for the sugar content, but there you go , you pays your money and you takes your choice but it’s charcoal filters for me every time.

Agree 100%. I’ve smoked both filtered and unfiltered and the only real difference I notice is filtered smoking prevents moisture in my bowl and prevents me from getting tongue bite. Like you say, I can smoke anything with a filter, but if I smoke Virginia based blends without one, 90% of the time I get some bite that I’d prefer to not have to deal with. However, sadly there are more 9mm pipes to choose from overseas than the US.

Hey Simon, I suffered tongue bite when I started smoking so have always used a filter, I have heard a lot of stuff on the subject, all I know for certain is that it bite is due to the pH of the smoke and the only tobacco I can smoke without a filter is germains brown flake, I can only imagine the reason for this is in my own head as I believe that the blend uses no casing or topping and therefore let's me get allong with it as let's face it all tobaccos use some sort of casing and if they say otherwise it is probably bullshit. I have some luck with a few gawith blends for a while but they usually end up with bite at some point but I can only imagine that was because they were the first blends I ever tried... anyway I don't really know anymore but I still use a 9mm filter but I am upset at how much it limits my pipe choices. Thanks for the video, I find it interesting also 😀

I started with non filtered pipes, my first cob pipe had a filter and I found I liked it, then I tried a 9mm charcoal filtered pipe I really enjoyed it. I only have 2 9mm pipes. I find if I smoke MB Virginia Number 1 i get tongue bite in a nonfilterd pipe

Simon, I prefer smoking with a filter. The majority of my pipes are filtered and for me, they smoke better. It's a personal preference.

cigar tobacco has little relevance IMO because the pipe still causes the problem because of moisture produced within the pipe some from our mouth and some from the tobacco and some of the environment we are smoking in. Cigars the leaf and the wrapper are absorbing some of the moisture I also smoke system pipes and in that pipe, you can empty the moisture as it builds up and those give very little if any tongue bite assuming you empty it at the proper time Many pipes smokers that smoke pipes without filters many are puffing like freight trains our beloved MAtches was one of those guys and his tongue could take it I would guess and maybe giving it enough time you become conditioned to it.

I’ve never smoked them with a filter but I love how open the draw is on 9mm. I smoke both non and 9mm pipes daily without issue. My LCS 9mm that I smoke without a filter is one of my favorite pipes. Think I’ll smoke one of my Kirsten metal meerschaum pipes today 😁👍🏻

great video Simon, lately ive been starting to appreciate 9mm filters, I mostly smoke no filtered pipes but I do get tongue bite when smoking straight virginias - maybe I'm smoking too fast but it's not always easy for me, and I'm quite sensitive. when I already have a bit of a tongue bite smoking with a filter really helps a bit and lets me smoke instead of completely stop smoking for a few days. i can see pros and cons to with filters and non filters, it was funny because I was lighting a 9mm pipe I just got when I saw your video! will go check Mike's video, his prespective is always fantastic as well.

It's the temperature. Pipes can burn much hotter than cigars.

I enjoy using 9mm filters, to keep the smoke both drier and less bitey... people who don't use filters range from polite about it, to insinuating I'm either weak or stupid for using one. That's fine. :-)

Try, that is all that I buy in the way of pipes. That is 9mm.

If you really freight train puff on a cigar you won't get tongue bite, but you'll get something like "mouth bite", the next day will be particularly rough for your pallette. It has to do with temperature, pipes concentrate the heat and can burn way hotter than a cigar. This coupled with certain individuals tolerance for hot smoke. My tongue is wimpy, so 9mm filters are awesome 👍

I think tongue bite is related to two things. One is a person's tolerance to chili pepper heat. The second is draw speed. Some people can eat a basket full of chili peppers and enjoy them. Others cannot tolerate a single grain of ground black pepper. This will influence whether a person gets tongue bite readily, or not. Draw speed is another important factor. In smoking with others, I have been able to hear the airflow in some pipes from nearly across a room, which indicates a strong and fast draw. Drawing air fast increases the temperature of the incoming smoke. If you are used to the restriction that a filter introduces and then smoke a non-filtered pipe, your draw speed will probably be too fast because you are probably smoking the unfiltered pipe in the same manner as you would draw on the filtered pipe. If you smoke cigars and do not like the pepper that comes from some sticks, you will probably not enjoy pure Virginia blends either. All this said, smoke what you LIKE and HOW you like. Life is just too short to get hung up on how OTHERS enjoy their smoke. You get 25,000 days plus or minus 5,000. Live them well.

I rarely use a filter, because that is my preference. If you or anyone else enjoys smoking pipes with a filter because it helps reduce or eliminate tongue bite, who am I to tell you that you are smoking incorrectly? Who am I to tell you that filters can't eliminate tongue bite? Activated charcoal is a very porous and absorbent material, there is a reason why it is such a common filtration media. What works for me, does not guarantee it will work for you. There is no authority in the pipe smoking world; no matter how much experience one has. Thank you for sharing.
