Absolutely fabulous collection that shows so much not only about the end of the 9th Avenue El, but of the area and everyday life in 1940. Priceless historical record. Thanks for sharing this!

I grew up on west 107th street , and I still see buildings that exist to this day on this video.

It just boggles the mind that only 24 years after the city spends a mint refurbishing the 2nd, 3rd and 9th Ave Els to have an express track, they dismantle the 2nd and 9th Av Els, and 15 years later the 3rd Av El in Manhattan, the whole thing! What a waste of taxpayer money. No thanks to Robert Moses, effin a-hole, expressways and cars were not the solution! These lines could've all been refurbished again to be modern like they did in Chicago.

Charles Beyer I read that Mayor LaGuardia also wasn't a fan of the elevated trains. He wanted them gone, so he and Robert Moses probably had a hand in their demise. If ALL of the Manhattan El lines were still up there wouldn't be so much overcrowding and congestion on the underground lines. Jmo.

It was largely inevitable as the New York City owned IND Subway was conceived and construction started in 1925 with the 8th Ave Subway opening in 1932, 1933, the Fulton Street Line in Brooklyn in 1936 and the Sixth Ave Line in 1940 to replace the 9th and 6th Ave Elevated Lines in Manhattan and the main section of the Fulton Street Elevated Line in Brooklyn. A follow on Municipally owned and operated Second Ave Subway was delayed by the Second World War, the reorientation to largely, the Automobile, suburban development and the concentration on expressway and parkway construction (Robert Moses)

@@visionpersistance Exactly. Guest what now we have Brother Eric Adams in the office the new black mayor Eric Adams said that south Bronx definitely needs Transportation and he said it on the news 📰 last year before he got worned in the office. Matter afact I have the Article and other people were mentioning about the 3rd Avenue Elevated line in south Bronx . Thank God 🙏 Jesus that we have the right people in the office The Governor Cathy hucko and the mayor Eric Adams the second black 🖤 man in the office. Like the mayor Eric Adams said they shouldn't never torn down this 3rd Avenue Elevated line. May Robert mosses be bless and be in peace with the Lord of Jesus Christ. Cathy hucko and the mayor Eric Adams are definitely gonna work together as one. We just need to vote for some body that's gonna bring more transportation s extra iRT subway lines like the 9th Avenue Elevated line and the 3rd Avenue Elevated line between Gun hill road and Queens plaza connecting with the 7 and the N W trains. Or they could use the 10 trains to Queens plaza and the 8 trains could definitely terminate at 125 street Manhattan connecting with the 4 5 6 Q T and the Metro North railroad trains.

Robert mosses is no longer on this earth 🌎 anymore. We must go fourth in the Lord 🙏. God is getting fed up with all this foolishness. Doing dirty business. When they do people wrong GoD will bring it to pass. That's the reason why they have the 8 signs on the R62AS and the R142as . I watched it on my RU-vid the R142a 4 train had the old 8 announcements between Gun hill road and Clearmount Avenue Webster Ave Bronx Manhattan south Ferry. Something is coming back on the 3rd Avenue Elevated line I'm telling you. What ever the governor cathy hucko and the mayor Eric Adams wants the MTA workers to do something that needs to be done. If they don't get the job done properly . You know that Eric Adams used to be a police officer,
