Bless you for making this video! Just completed my first transmission fluid change on my 2012 civic with 87,000 miles. Having the crush washer part numbers in the comments was extremely helpful. The whole job cost me $20 and no problems doing it. Again... thanks!

I'm having a hell of a time right now shifting my car into first gear lately. It only gets close to freezing every now and then where I live, and my car is only at around 40k miles, but I've had her since the end of 2015. Never had the gearbox oil changed, so I'm definitely gonna knock this out.

thanks for the awesome tutorial! I was able to change out the MTF following your video. A couple helpful notes: 1) The transmission drain crush washer is the same size as the engine oil drain crush washer. and 2) I was able to fill through the check hole with a smaller ~0.5" diameter tubing -- so long as the tubing is seated in the hole and doesn't pop out, it should be fine. Maybe have someone hold the tubing while you fill for extra precaution.

Well I did it today. Not a bad job, but the hose I bought was too short so I had to remove the air box. Also I’m surprised these cars don’t have a magnetic drain plug. Had a few metal shavings in the drain pan, but nothing serious

Thanks for taking the time to record this video. Always better to see and hear than just read about it. I'm at 40k with 98% interstate miles, so not too far out. The dealership in Nashville wanted $130 for this. That really scared me. I did MT oil changes on my '92 Civics all the time. I couldn't understand why this would be so different. It isn't! It really sucks a big one that they don't sell the service manuals any more. I can understand not selling paper in lieu of a CD. I guess they're just pricks!

Why didn't you just fill using the fill bolt on top? Just curious. I understand your point of knowing you're at 2qts, but I mean if you've bought 2qts not really any guesswork there.
@CarsCouches
@CarsCouches 6 лет назад
Daniel Austin Yes your right and there isn't anything stopping you from doing that and/or leaving the check hole open too but I didn't do it that way mainly because I'm lazy and didn't feel like removing the air box haha. Plus the full 2 qts was actually a little past the bottom of the check hole even tho it would've been fine like that. Thanks for watching!

Always remember wearing gloves when handeling any type of oil (oil is not good for you). Furthermore I reccomend placing your car on 4 jackstands to get it horizontal! That is wayy safer than doing it with a jack, especially if you remove a wheel.

Tereso Gutierrez You could yes, I just prefer doing it from the check hole. Honestly did not try to see how much trouble it is since I assumed I'd have to take out the air box. Either way you need either a couple funnel or on with a hose. BTW it was 1/2" I.d. hose goo.gl/images/cccG1G

Yea i thought so wich its not hard at all specially if u have an aftermarket air intake but i might be trying from up their since the car would be perfectly level and you be filling it up all the way to the top assuming it will and the bolt is for filling tran oil.... but thank you again and the fast response

Sorry if this is stupid question but ive heard people mentioning changing the "gear fluid" is that the same as clutch fluid? And do you need to change it? I just dont know very much about cars and i financed one of these got about 5 years left paying off and just wanna make sure it runs a while and i maintain it correctly. And i dont have the money to go to expensive dealership always, but yea sorry for my ignorance im pool guy not car guy lmao but yea thanks in advance i appreciate it.
@CarsCouches
@CarsCouches 5 лет назад
No stupid questions for the inexperienced! Clutch fluid is not the same as gear fluid. Clutch fluid is for the hydraulic action that causes clutch engagement, which is the same as brake fluid (dot3 or 4). Gear fluid usually refers to differential fluid or gear oil which isnt far off from MTF but wouldn't interchange. Whoever you're talking to I'm pretty sure they mean MTF. If you want to change clutch fluid then you would have to bleed it from the slave cylinder and the reservoir is located next to the brake master cylinder. Also the maintenance schedule is online if you want to see want is recommended. Hope I am helpful!

You dont drain & fill x3? From what I understand this is a partial drain. I think if you want to flush all the fluid you have to do it 3x

If you want to do a thorough flush yes you can do this but I think it would be a little overkill to do this every time. Just personal feelings over it but if you want the utmost care for it all power to you.

You could always try pb blaster to loosen it up or fill it from the top like you said. You shouldn't be hurting anything, really when you fill from the the fill plug, you'll lose like .05 of a quart so that little extra is just fine.
