Hey friends, my names Parker, and my partner is Katy. Welcome back to another episode, and part two of our standing rigging replacement on our Passport 42 named Boundless. We bought her last year, and together, we are working to get her ready to sail around the world 🌎
Since some of you may not be familiar with sailboats, the standing rig is all of the stainless steel cables that hold up our 60’ mast and are a very important part of any sailboat. They attach to chainplates on the deck, and on the mast at various points, some of them being held away from the mast by things called spreaders.
Last week we replaced all of our shrouds under the instruction of our friend and professional rigger, Steve. If you haven’t seen that video yet, I recommend watching it first to get caught up on this project.
This week, we are tackling the the two forestays, which are on the front (or bow) of the boat. They support the front of the mast, and have things called furlers that the two headsails, the jib and the staysail roll (or furl) up onto. Unlike the shrouds, the forestay cables run inside the furling foils. This makes them the most complicated part of changing out the standing rigging. We have to try and pull the new cable through the bearings in the foil, and if we fail, we will have to disassemble the aluminum foil sections piece by piece making the job much more tedious AND increases the possibility of breaking something in the process… We have two shots at getting it right. Are we feeling lucky? Well cross your fingers everyone, and lets see how it goes…

That $5000.00 is a far cry from what it would have cost for a boat yard to do it. A good video learned a little from it.

Great series of episodes! The whole rigging process is fascinating. Your video production skills were up to the task of documenting a very complicated process.

So glad a previous owner splurged on Navtec rod rigging and that a subsequent owner had it surveyed and tested and had the rod re-headed.

I did that job on my Furlex and was able to shove the new wire down the profile just like that. No messenger line necessary. Your video was well done.

Actually an old halyard sheet with the inner braids & strands snipped off will fit over the whole cable like a Chinese finger puzzle. Adding very little to the total diameter, just need to tape it down on the cut end so it grabs the cable.

Great to see Kattie up the mast for an inspection. Sorry to hear of her High Anxiety and upset stomach. We have been into yoga for a period and have noticed being less anxious and our tensile strength has improved considerably. Great episode, your camera action is perfect with this tutorial and the explanation was extremely well done. Replacing our rigging several years ago cost us $21,000 so the saving was considerable. A huge thank you for this episode and of course to the many volunteers you had helping this refit.

To Begin with standing rigging can be done with several different types of materials not just stainless steel cables. That’s choice.

Synthetic would have been a fortune and tough to justify on a cruising boat on a limited budget. Galvanized would have devalued the boat so I think they made a prudent choice. Ben S/V DAWN

We used sta-loks for the Oyster we re-rigged last year. And we had to re-do a couple of stays because we cut them just a bit long - better than short. I seem to remember that sta-lok recommends not using any material within the fitting. What 'goop' did you use and why? I'll likely be re-rigging a boat next year. Thanks for your prompt and informative replies. Only Wind Hippie Sailing has been so responsive.

We didn’t use any goop in the shrouds or the backstay. We did use it in the forestay and inner forestay because they live inside the furler units and I won’t be able to inspect them as easily. Thanks for commenting sometimes I don’t get to them but I love replying so keep em coming 😊

Takk for svar! Hmmm...@@SailingSeawind
