In a significant development for Brisbane's northern suburbs, a $35 million study will be led by the Queensland Investment Corporation to explore the potential construction of a toll tunnel connecting Kedron and Carseldine. This ambitious project, spanning about 7 kilometres, promises to reduce congestion and improve connectivity by seamlessly linking the Bruce Highway to Legacy Way, Clem 7, M1, and Centenary Highway.
The study will assess technical, financial, and transportation aspects while considering the impact on public and active transport options in the corridor.
This study is looking at a highly contentious area of Brisbane’s northside known as the North West Transport Corridor: an area that includes plenty of bushland and green space which has been set aside for decades for future surface-level transport developments. But there is increasing calls to protect this green space, rather than strip it away, and add new transport developments underground via tunnels. This isn’t even the first tunnel proposal - a study was recently completed by the Brisbane City Council to look at a potential combined road and rail tunnel, with connections to similar points in this new study. What’s changed in this new study?
And finally, Suburban Futures and MODE Design have released images of what the Chermside suburb could become, if heavy through transport was diverted away via the tunnel, and the road reclaimed to become better utilised pedestrian friendly spaces that will enhance the area for businesses, residents and visitors.

If you're going to do this, don't waste the opportunity (they will) to put the capacity for HEAVY RAIL through as well and get RAIL to a new part of the wider city, in an affordable and timely way!

Not sure I agree with not looking into heavy rail, the tunnel is a great idea however the north west really lacks connectivity to the CBD. Another rail line will also help future proof the city. Smaller projects will just lead to more projects as Brisbane grows

The Northwest transport corridor Everton Park to Carseldine (part of the old Route 20) suggests a tunnel from Everton Park to the western freeway and another from the western freeway to Stones Corner.

A 10km bypass tunnel will have a circa $8 toll. If it dumps you onto the Airport Link, you are looking at circa $14 each way. So Gympie Road will still be busy, because a lot of people can't afford/justify to use the toll roads routinely.

Legacy Way made traffic worse in the Western suburbs. The promised express buses were limited to a few token peak hour services. Traffic on Milton Rd is worse than before the tunnel. So much funding and energy is being spent on expanding the road network for mainly single occupant cars; The focus needs to be on moving people.

Yes Mr Pikos repeated one of the great lies about the Airport Link Tunnel in his opening lines - that it was built as a city-airport connection. The planners' own estimates, pre-construction, were that it would reduce traffic on Kingsford Smith Drive by only 18 per cent. That was over a decade ago, so as you can imagine, it's no doubt creeping back up now. No-one goes through Kedron if they are driving from the city to the airport, and as one of the staff told me at a community engagement forum, taking the tunnel via Kedron rather than the more direct route from the city under Hamilton Hill - half the distance - was about capturing drivers from a wider area from the north and west at the Kedron tunnel entry point. The extra tunnel length could have been used to deliver traffic directly to Airport Drive (or at least on the East-West Arterial), rather than at a set of traffic lights where you wait to cross Sandgate Rd as you exit the tunnel. A tunnel exit on Airport Drive also would have saved the govt the expense of building that huge aerial bridge to get airport traffic over the Nudgee Rd roundabout - that was essentially the govt outlaying big bucks in support of a dumb private profit enterprise (Macquarie Bank if I recall.) Selling the "Airport Link Tunnel" as a "road from the city to the airport" was always a scam. You see what they did there - they only called it a "link" to the airport. It becomes clear the developers always saw it as a more of a northern link to connect to further tunnels heading north.

I've always thought the problem with Brisbane is its planners still suffer from small town syndrome. They need to start thinking BIGGER!!! Start planning NOW for when Brisbane is 5 Million population.

A few questions: 1. Let’s start with metro, sorry busses pretending to be trams. How do you solve the problem of traffic lights every 200 meters? 2. Singapore builds a new metro line every 5-10 years and builds a few new stations every year. How is that we call impossible what others do a regular basis?

They are currently doing extensive work to widen Gympie Rd to have dedicated bus lanes from Chermside to Kedron (north & southbound). Relocating a lot of underground infrastructure and narrowing footpaths. Definitely seems like a band-aid solution to fix the congestion and won't provide high speed transit due to the number of traffic lights. www.tmr.qld.gov.au/projects/northern-transitway

Look at Parramatta Road (with WestConnex below, a tolled 6 lane 80kph tunnel). If they toll this tunnel, nothing will happen on the surface because it will still be busy and need 6 lanes at 60kph. No activation has occurred. Nundah is not the example because it’s not tolled. Stop with the dreaming.

As much as no one likes traffic jams, building another tunnel will not solve congestion issues. Successive QLD governments having been going on a road/tunnel building rampage for the past 30 years and yet despite all of their efforts, we now have the worst congestion in the country. Meanwhile investment in better public transport has fallen way short of what it should be for a city of this size and now we have this perfect awful storm of congestion that will only grow worse if we build another road tunnel. Brisbane is on track to become the Los Angeles traffic capital of the country if we just merely continue to stay the course and build more road tunnels or roads and let public transport fall by the wayside. How about we actually invest in a busway to Bracken Ridge which will move way more people quicker rather than just defaulting to building another road for cars just to fill up. Or even better, heavy rail. We have the Trouts Rd corridor ripe for plucking by putting in another northern rail entrance/exit out of Brisbane which would be way more effective than a congestion causing new road. But then this is QLD and we’re not very smart…..as much as we like to make fun of Sydney and Melbourne, their transport systems run rings around Brisbane’s. Even Perth’s train network runs rings around ours and they have 15min train frequencies in off peak times, Brisbane still can’t even manage that. Building more roads is the cause of congestion, not the solution.

It's too bad that the Brisbane Metro continuing on Gympie Road will not have a stop at The Prince Charles Hospital. TPCH employs >5000 people, to say nothing of the several hundred visitors and outpatients. TPCH is expanding massively as well. Previous Northern Busway extensions plans (From 2010-2012) had several options for small detour via TPCH. I see no reason why this couldn't be implemented with the Brisbane Metro in mind. The Princess Alexandra Hospital and Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital both have dedicated Busway stations that have proven massively popular with staff, patients and visitors alike. It would be a shame if the Northern Busway extension didn't go through TPCH.

It doesn't have to be either either! The north west transport corridor (along trouts road) can and should be used for public transport and not completely ignored because there's been some largely unused and ignored bushland growth in a narrow corridor in between houses. The whole idea of it was keeping it aside so it could be used for these exact purposes... The Gympie rd bypass is a great idea and should be done but so is developing the north west transport corridor for rail/metro use! There is next to no public transport along trouts rd, it would serve a large number of people and suburbs

A lot of people use Gympie road now to avoid paying the Gateway toll. Building a tolled tunnel is simply not going to take enough traffic off Gympie road. Gympie road needs to be turned into a highway and make the northside a lot more functional similiar to the southside.

Not sure why Westfield was never made to build better connections ie. flyover ramps to the centre as part of their redevelopments and upgrades. Such a major shopping drawcard causing major demand on the local traffic networks and more so now that Toombul out of action. Similar work was undertaken at both Indro and Carindale centres to help traffic flow.

Once upon a time, a very good tram service ran from the city to Chermside at Hamilton Road, running on its own right-of-way along Gympie Road from about Kedron to the terminus. It was removed in the late 1960s in what must now look like the worst official civic vandalism ever. Replacing it with the new Metro-bus is a no-brainer. Better late than never.

I think absolutely no. It would be much nicer to have a tunnel than that abomination Gympie Road, but Brisbane at this point shouldn't be building anymore major roads. Instead we should build a underground train line and expand the Brisbane Metro (with both already having plans for it). Why? Cars are unsustainable, they take up too much room and no matter how many more lanes we build traffic will not go away. Cars are bad for the environment, they are bad for cities and they are bad for us. Yes having a tunnel will funnel traffic away from the surface, but that 6 billion dollars could go to build that new train tunnel and completely transform Chermside as we know it; instead of just building more roads that we should be phasing out at this point. If we want Brisbane to be a world class green city, we need to point the middle finger at cars for a change and focus on building a world class public transport network.

I agree with you, but it will be hard. Automobile companies and city parking lots will do anything they can for it to be exclusive car dependent infrastructure. They are already kicking up a stink about the bus lanes because they say they get less business, but also, it’s because they fear that people will catch the bus and not buy their cars. Same with parking companies in the city. They want most people to drive so they make money from their inner city parking lots. We really do need to change our ways.

Yes they do need to keep building upon the train lines however got are delusional if you think we don't need more roads. What about people that aren't going to the city? IE school drop offs, driving to Noosa for a long weekend? Tradies, trucks suppling food to supermarkets they all need roads. The northside of Brisbane is about 10 years behind of the road infrastructure that it needs today never Mind the future. You can't take your family on a bus or train to go do grocery shopping. Not everyone lives in inner city hippie lifestyle

@@tersy9862 The only thing you mentioned that actually requires roads is tradies and logistics. Which I have no issue against, but they already have a giant road network to assist them. And taking more cars off the road will mean they can move a lot more freely. You do not need a car to drop your kid off to school, you can take them on the train or bus (or even just walk) until they are like 10 years old and can do it themselves. If we actually had a large well designed train network, you could easily take the train to places like Noosa; and if it had appropriate will power you could take a highspeed train there in just 20 minutes. You can walk to your local grocer and get food, as I do it all the time without issue. Cars are not essential to our lives besides for people far away from cities, or if you frequently have to haul heavy loads from A to B. If we had a well designed public transport network and walkable cities, you'd find you'd almost never need cars.

Buses are disgusting however as they are so slow and inefficient. You however are delusional if you think people are going to drop their kids off at school on a bus 🤣 How am I going to fit a TV or plants from Bunnings on a bus 🤣🤣

Yes! Go Mel!! 🎉😂 and to compliment a new underground train line to speed up train travel to the new sunny coast line. On the cross river rail line from exhibition station, with upgraded station at Albion, then underground towards the north such as Kedron, Chermside, Aspley train stations. Time to keep using those tunnel boring machines Brisbane needs a real underground.

I was actually thinking something like this. The Albion station platforms would have been Underground though and the south tunnel portal would have emerged at Mayne Yards flowing into Cross River Rail via Exhibition station.

Wonder how they plan to get the metro up to Chermside from the hospital. Problem for the future I guess but the A3 couldn't handle it either. Drove on gympie road just yesterday, what a nightmare.

I truly don’t understand why they can’t just build an elevator busway on Gympie Road. It’s still have room for three lanes of traffic and probably a cycle path on both sites. It’s such a simple solution and we shouldn’t just be building new roads willy-nilly

With this Road Tunnel, I would like it to feed directly into Stage 3 of the Bruce Highway Western Alternative at the Bald Hills Gateway/Bruce Highway interchange, so there is a seamless transition and so the Gympie Arterial doesn't get clogged up any further & it would help whiz traffic between the city & the new Caboolture West Development, without dumping he traffic on existing local roads. True this would be more expensive, but will have way more benefits. Beams Road Interchange should also be Upgraded. I also think that there needs to be a massive Junction in the Cricket fields across from the Chermside shopping centre to allow for easy access to this commercial centre from the tunnel.

This bypass is not like Nundah, there is not toll on that bypass. This being a toll would really limit the effectiveness. Underground rail needs to be considered at the north west corridor as the McDowell, Bridgeman Downs and Albany creek areas are woefully connected to public transport. Great video though

Issue is those are some wealthy suburbs (wealthiest in Brisbane behind Ascot, bulimba and new farm), so have fun trying to build something through this nimby area

@@electro_sykes all you need to do is look at any of the council development submissions for these areas and the number of complaints the council disregards when approving developments. Also a tunnel doesn’t go through anyone’s backyard….?

I am not opposed to the new tunnel. Gympie Road is definitely a nightmare. My biggest issue is the repeated acknowledgement of Chermside being a major hub and the importance of public transport links…yet I live less than 5kms from Westfield Chermside and can’t travel there on public transport unless I take two buses which initially head in the complete wrong direction and take over 50 minutes one way. Review the public transport links and this too will reduce the number of cars on the road. I would much rather take public transport than drive and park.

I avoid scary Chermside Shopping Centre because it's too big and traffic is too bad. Takes so long to get in, park, and get where you're going and get out again. Please can we just have Toombul back for convenience shopping, banks and a post office? With plenty of walking/biking path access under Sandgate Rd.

Brisbanes traffic issues particularly on the Northside are because the Bjelke-Petersen government abandoned the Wilber Smith plan upon completion of the SE freeway which replace Logan Road as the southern arterial. Nothing was done on the Northside. The Northwest transport corridor (Everton Park to Carseldine ) remains unused. The current tunnels (Clem7, Airport Link and Legacy Way) roughly follow goals set out in the Wilber Smith plan. The only real alternative to a Gympie Road tunnel is a North East freeway.

The only real alternative is to stop stumbling around drunk in the dark from one Road Project to the next and to finally have a solid plan for Public Transport expansion. The next Brisbane Metro projects, a Cross River Rail extension and a Subway line hould already be ready to get started, instead everything is wrapping up and grinding to a halt with half-finished half-baked infrastructure plans and a Stack of bottlenecks still there. Look at Sydney and Perth they are just keeping on going with the momentum.

Great overview of Brisbane's transport plans. The tunnel proposal seems like a smart move for reducing traffic and preserving green spaces. Excited to see how Chermside evolves with these changes. Thanks for the info!

I have lived in this area for over half a century and we have told subsequent governments there was a looming problem... none of them listened and now private roads are the solution???? No need for any tolls. Tunnels boost private land values. Value Capture Tax 1% of the private land value uplift created by TAX PAYERS and return to TAX PAYERS. Voila! Toll free publicly owned free tunnels.

The last brisbane needs is more tunnels. Build more protected bike ways along or parallel to the major arteries like Kelvin Grove Road and Lutwych Road. People within the 7 to 10 kilometre radius can than e-bike or e=scooter into work. Micro transport is the way to go and will relief the blockages for people that need to drive in. Also heavy transport should be mandated through the tunnels via tax breaks and free access.

“Public transport is too expensive”, but you’re all for building an 6-10 billion dollar tunnel to “fix congestion” The BCC Metro is a bandaid solution and doesn’t provide anywhere near enough capacity for the future of a growing city. We need light rail as a minimum of better yet build an actual metro!

I believe in my opinion, if the Government funds its construction using taxpayer's money, especially during a cost of living crisis, then it should be rightfully run and operated by Transport & Main Roads from the day it opens. Not Transurban. I am not entirely against privatisation but I think its unfair if taxpayers pay for a road to be built and then still have to pay to use it, especially when many are already under financial burden. If a private company like Transurban wants to operate it, then they should fund the tunnel's construction entirely themselves, without Government funding and taxpayers money. We need to stop hurting taxpayers wallets and going on a privatisation spending spree. I believe wasting taxpayers money on this kind of fuckery is the last thing we need right now.

It's great. Needed it 20 years ago! A7 tunnel also needed in south to connect Ipswich motorway link to Clem Jones ... that's the next bottleneck but much shorter. Toll is required obviously and most happy to pay. Key is keeping it affordable... say $3 to $5 each way. If saving 10 to 15 min at $8 or more then it's more than my hourly wage and doesn't make sense. If we need more private equity then offer a 50 year partnership. A tunnel is the only way. Cannot use green space anymore. And a tunnel means the Metro buses can be built on resectioned Gympie Rd. If heavy rail does become a thing and ppl use less cars, then the tunnel could converted to a rail line. Let's go!!!😊

I think a tunnel under Gympie Rd is a no brainer. Toll or no toll. As it stands Gympie Rd I think is the worst road in Brisbane. It's Brisbane's version of Sydney's Parramatta Rd. A goat track at a stand still. If a tunnel isn't built, it's only going to get worse. Also extending the Brisbane metro to Chermside is another no brainer. I'd be all for heavy rail, but that'd probably mean forgoing the tunnel under Gympie Rd given the cost. So extending the metro makes more sense, and also means it can be easily extended in the future further north. Then perhaps once the tunnel is built, heavy rail underground to Chermside and beyond could be looked at.

And just like all the other toll roads in Brisbane, it won't get used enough to make any difference. I've never used a toll road in Brisbane, and I never will. Gov keeps selling roads to private corps, so I will never use that road again. I will purposely take the long way round. @@rooboy69 on busy days, they shut down half the exits so your stuck in traffic in the car park so you go over 3 hours and have to pay. especially on thursday nights and weekends. Its starting to get ridiculous. North Lakes are starting to do the same thing too.

a tunnel would be great. how ever. unless its toll free its not going to do much. most people who live up north are middle to low income earners. they will not use it like the rest of the tolls. not to mention if it links up to the airport link. your having a laugh.

I live on the northside and my area would be impacted by these developments however I support them. The North West needs rail connectivity and the tunnel road is good as transport trucks going to the north in the future will be able to bypass the CBD. I do not want to see anymore of the future tunnel project later just become surface road project as that would be a massive shame, we should be past that in city development. Its important to realise aswell that this idea for the North West transport corridor has been thrown around in politics for ages at this point. Literally decades. Probably time to do something now

This could all have been avoided if Toombul had been flood upgraded before 2021. Rail is already there. Unbelievable waste and massive loss to the Nundah community.

Just to think if they built the North West Freeway in the past we wouldn't have to fork out $6-10 billion? now. But better late than never. Also interesting to see what Chermside will eventually look like but I wish it could have more character than just concrete and glass high rises jammed next to each other like West End, Nundah and other suburbs.

Within the first 30 seconds, the concept design has a suicide lane for cyclists sandwiched between buses and cars. None of the current tunnel tollway projects have lived up to their hype and actually reduced traffic on surface-level corridors. Why do we keep doing things that are proven not to work, both here are in cities elsewhere?

Brisbane needs to differentiate between fixing arterial congestion and suburban main road congestion noting arterial congestion is by far the greater issue and killer of productivity.

@@melpikos8533 With this Road Tunnel, I would like it to feed directly into Stage 3 of the Bruce Highway Western Alternative at the Bald Hills Gateway/Bruce Highway interchange, so there is a seamless transition and so the Gympie Arterial doesn't get clogged up any further & it would help whiz traffic between the city & the new Caboolture West Development, without dumping he traffic on existing local roads. True this would be more expensive, but will have way more benefits. Beams Road Interchange should also be Upgraded. I also think that there needs to be a massive Junction in the Cricket fields across from the Chermside shopping centre to allow for easy access to this commercial centre from the tunnel.

A better use of money - and way less than $6 billion - would be creating a bypass around Albion (mainly Sandgate Road) like they did for Nundah. Albion already has a major train line and numerous developments planned or underway and taking the traffic off Sandgate Road (between the Frodsham Street intersection & the Albion Overpass) would allow Albion to become an inner-city neighbourhood that would attract people to want to live there. The potential is already there, it just needs the Council to fix the crazy roads in the area.

Yes they should be building a free one under south bank so it hooks up with the go between bridge and ICB, it would have exits left to corro drive, and it could have tolled exits if you want to go under the river and enter into the CBD exits. Similar to how the riverside expressway operates now on Elizabeth and Margaret etc… discourage driving into CBD. Then, knock down the riverside expressway and return the entire north bank (not just queens wharf) to the people and developers to raise the funds to put it underground. Particularly if they’re make the Gabba Olympic park they need to remove the surface traffic it’s already a nightmare around Stanley/vulture/m3. Hmmm tunnel across to Toowong, well remember that was can do campbells last transapex desire for a east west tunnel like that but the people voted him out and legacy was was the last tunnel to be built in this city so it never got built (yet). Look back on Mel’s videos he had a video about demolishing the riverside expressway!

Run a tunnel from the Ipswich motorway at Archerfield, to the clem 7, then run it to Legacy way/ICB, taking traffic off the riverside expressway, then run it all the way under the Northwest transport corridor, then link it straight up to include the Bruce Highway Western Alternative at from Bald Hills to Caboolture West and then we can call it the M8 Motorway and we can have it as that Western Bypass.

The engineering is not the problem here. It's the fact that most of these projects are dreamt up by investment bankers (eg Macquarie Bank) and designed primarily for profit and not for best function.

Great video, Brisbane absolutely needs to invest in more tunnels and tunnels that actually go places and don’t just pop you up into another bottle neck…and we should be looking at combo tunnels that mix road and rail the city is only growing and the old pics are coming and our infrastructure is not up to world class stand Brisbane will be laughed at if we do make changes and sipped things up now..

Probably not enough green spaces BUT if there was a strategy of street planting and encourage minimum areas of planting in private yards, the lost volume woudl be increased and shade hot surfaces and maybe more beneficial overall. Use the dedicated space (which would still have trees along its edges) and spread the tree canopy far wider over all the suburbs.

Excellent wrap up! Extending the metro via the NW corridor from Aspley/Albany Creek road, up to Bald Hills and Strathpine via tunnel and at grade plus bikeways and open space would be a terrific option to enhance bicycle connectivity from Moreton Bay City into the CBD. Imagine - a world class open space, walking and cycleway along the NW corridor shared with the Brisbane metro network. All this in addition to the tunnel being mooted between Beams Road and Kedron - agree with feeders into Chermside and Aspley. NO to heavy rail!!
