This segment of "Air Force Now" features the A-1 Skyraider in action inVietnam with the First Special Operations Squadron also known as the "Hobos". In this instance the Skyraider is seen flying cover for "Jolly Green Giant" rescue helicopters performing search and rescue operations.
As American involvement in the Vietnam War began, the A-1 Skyraider was still the medium attack aircraft in many carrier air wings, although it was planned to be replaced by the A-6A Intruder as part of the general switch to jet aircraft. Skyraiders from Constellation and Ticonderoga participated in the first U.S. Navy strikes against North Vietnam on 5 August 1964 as part of Operation Pierce Arrow in response to the Gulf of Tonkin Incident, striking against fuel depots at Vinh, with one Skyraider from Ticonderoga damaged by anti-aircraft fire, and a second from Constellation shot down, killing its pilot.
As they were released from U.S. Navy service, Skyraiders were introduced into the South Vietnamese Air Force (VNAF). They were also used by the USAF to perform one of the Skyraider's most famous roles: the "Sandy" helicopter escort on combat rescues. USAF Major Bernard F. Fisher piloted an A-1E on 10 March 1966 mission for which he was awarded the Medal of Honor for rescuing Major "Jump" Myers at A Shau Special Forces Camp. USAF Colonel William A. Jones, III piloted an A-1H on 1 September 1968 mission for which he was awarded the Medal of Honor. In that mission, despite damage to his aircraft and suffering serious burns, he returned to his base and reported the position of a downed U.S. airman.
After November 1972, all A-1s in U.S. service in Southeast Asia were transferred to the South Vietnamese Air Force (VNAF) and their roles taken over by the subsonic LTV A-7 Corsair II. The Skyraider in Vietnam pioneered the concept of tough, survivable aircraft with long loiter times and large ordnance loads. The USAF lost 201 Skyraiders to all causes in Southeast Asia, while the Navy lost 65 to all causes. Of the 266 lost A-1s, five were shot down by surface-to-air missiles (SAMs), and three were shot down in air-to-air combat; two by North Vietnamese MiG-17s.
In contrast to the Korean War, fought a decade earlier, the U.S. Air Force used the naval A-1 Skyraider for the first time in Vietnam. As the Vietnam War progressed, USAF A-1s were painted in camouflage, while USN A-1 Skyraiders were gray/white in color; again, in contrast to the Korean War, when A-1s were painted dark blue.

+Tuco Ramirez The key is that the Skyraider has an extremely tough airframe and piston engine designed for carrier operations. It's meant to take a pounding. It is also very stable and flies at lower air speeds and has lower wing loading than turbine fighters, so aerodynamic forces are a bit less violent. It is also big and has many empty spaces within the fuselage and wings, so many projectiles went through and on out the other side without destroying something critical. It also has heavy aluminum armor right around the cockpit. So it kept on flying even with some radical battle damage. The A-10 shares the same heritage in its even more redundant design. The real key is just how over-built and strong the plane is. If the AAA didn't kill you or damage the engine very badly a wounded Skyraider would get you out of the strike area safely. My worst day was a 12.7 mm AAA hit in a 20 mm ammo can. Big hole. You could see the ground down through the wing but it still flew well.

What a beast. My godfather was USAF FAC in Korea and he loved to watch the "Hun" work over enemy stations. He told me stories about this plane as it skimmed over tree-lines and dropped bombs, rockets and strafing for hours. This plane flew almost 30 years of combat missions for the US. Talk about versatility and durability!

My grandfather flew these low and slow targeting the Ho Chi Minh Trail during the “secret war” in Laos and Cambodia. Sometimes flying as low as 10 feet over the jungle tree line. He was based in Thailand and flew 192 missions. He said he hated killing the elephants which sometimes were carrying supplies for the VC/NVA forces.

Used to watch these guys fly out of NKP and cross the border into Laos on the way to operations. I was totally impressed by these aircraft as they taxied out. Not as loud or fast as the Thuds when they lifted off the runway at Korat but saving those downed pilots in Indian country was a big job.

I used to ride in a jolly green giant going on runs to pick up packets of things needed to run the war. (Things that were needed to destroy downed birds like a F111A that just didn’t get back to Thailand and end up in Laos) Aardvarks were a thing of beauty, taking off from the alert apron and up into air and then pulling their wings back and flying off to support groung groups or as an intel plane flying in low just off the floor of tge jungle and leaving before they knew what had hit them.

The navy called them Spads, the Air Force called them Sandy's, but nothing in the flying inventory could supply extended close air support like the Skyraider, people think that the prop planes are to outdated for current combat, I would point at the AC130 aircraft, also any theater of operation that helicopters can operate, propeller driven gunships would also be effective, and a lot cheaper than jets or helicopters.

Even the OV-10 Bronco still sees action here and there to this day! Some modified G variants were used to great success against ISIS, employing the APKWS (Hydra 70 with a mid-body distributed aperture laser guidance fin kit) to minimize collateral damage. Once again props proved to be precise and economic, so in short very efficient. It's also why I personally dislike the A-10 as anything other than a morale booster.

I watched (from another aircraft) as, time after time, "fast movers" were sent out to do tactical strikes against enemy positions in Vietnam. They would show up, take 10 minutes to figure out where the enemy was, drop one or two bombs and then head back to their base to refuel. In other words, they were just about USELESS to accomplish anything of importance. ONLY these 'low and slow" ..."prop" fighters were able to do ANYTHING against the Vietcong and/or North Vietnamese regiments. They had the loiter time to "nail" the location of enemy positions and the armament and TIME to make multiple strikes on them. We should have had MORE of them in Vietnam...and not just for SARS missions.
@alaskanbas6507
@alaskanbas6507 Год назад
Did you get to see how the A-7 performed, by any chance? From a technology standpoint and lower speed, the pilot should've been able to engage the enemy more quickly and easily. That is compared to say the common F-4, but I don't know which types you saw of course, perhaps Huns as well.

Douglas would later develop the Skyraider into the turboprop-powered A2D Skyshark. Unfortunately, it never entered service as the Allison T40 engine that powered it proved unreliable. Besides, Douglas was also at work on the pure-jet-powered F3D/F-10 Skyknight, which proved much better. By Vietnam, US forces were using the Vought A-7 Corsair II.

Then get the hell out and I'll show you how a grunt needs those machine guns. 10 feet off the deck, not at 5000 ft. If I'd have been at LZ X-Ray I would have had grass is my landing gear coming in so low I could sweep from side to side. In Korea the Marines talked about how Jarhead jets would fly so low it made them duck even though they weren't THAT low. Airforce? They could tell it was them because they could barely see the plane. Helo Crew Chief/Plane Captain here. Isn't it crazy now to think that they trusted us teenagers with machines that flew? 😮

Awesome, I was a 19yr old Navy going to ADR school in Memphis & towards the end of schooling we were to start up these monsters ! I was Seated in the cockpit (next to an instructor) & I was starting that monster while the instructor was yelling at me for calling out the Wrong hydraulic pressures ! All this over the smoke & noises from start up. Something ya never forget ! Loved it all

What a fantastic aircraft she was, and God bless those talented,brave jocks that pulled the stick on the A-1. 191 were lost in viet nam, 172 in combat. However many ground elements owe their lives to the A-1 Skyraider and crews.

While not a "nice" subject...it is, indeed, impressive AND nice, to see an actual "non-Hollywooded" view of such. I was told the Spad could...and, would...fly and provide cover in conditions that were impossible for the then-modern jet craft, that because of it's relatively spartan design for the period, it was reliable in most any climatic extreme shown it, as in, less electronics to go haywire. Nowadays? I'd say, no way of course. But, we were still in kind of a "transition period", with good, accurate suppressing fire, I guess one could say?

It could probably still work in counter insurgency. Not very safe against modern threats, so facing people using last gen tech, it could possibly do alright. Of course, a pushed prop may be better for the added protection to engine in the strafe, tricycle gears, more space for sensors, an area for an aerial refueling probe, and better placed cannons. A modern with sensors for aiming, modern situational awareness capabilities, a new prop engine, and possible stol capabilities could be a way to lower operating costs.

I'm not sure if ANY battle aircraft ever had as many hardpoints as the A-1...even more than today's battlefield support king, the A-10. What a @#%&load of weapons it could carry.

What i love about The A1 Sky Raider was..not just the beauty of the aircraft itself but the ability n capability it represents. A1 was really was a flying tank! Fully Armed to the teeth n gum!! it has very strong n sturdy airframe build that enables it withstands such punishment from natures element n operations anywhere from rough,small n short runway airfield..even on dirt road or hi way if it had too..hours n hours of loitering time ability which are very essential n important not just for S.A.R mission,also for Recon,S.A.D n COINS missions too!the most best part was it can be upgraded with latest techs..it was not accident prone, (widow maker) very forgiving, safe n easy aircraft to fly(saves lots off cost n training hours for new pilots)fuel efficient,good flying or operation hours,easy to repair n low cost maintenance which were very important for a small country to have in their airforce like for example the south vietnam airforce to operate at that time. i would love to hv a bunch of fully armed to the teeth n gum A1 in my base as my personal low flight ops fighter-bomber Hahaha..
