The biggest barrier to saving money and having endless compost, is just waiting on building a compost bin. Use this 15 minute build for all your cold composting needs. Use it for leaves to make leaf mold and get the benefit of worm castings. Worms love leaves and tend to favor them.

Gary, Great Video! Have you thought about having a small worm farm to turn the compost into black gold (AKA the Worm castings) :)? I have millions of worms that I raise for fertilizer for my garden, and also to teach others how to care for them :) Worms are the secret to any great garden :)

Leaves give us most all the compost we need. Mixing with grass clippings can help and I always add some sprinkles of rotted cow manure packed with worms & microbes. Collecting stops mud forming and is a bi-daily chore for a month or more but well worth the raking time. Love to you all from Tipperary, Eire. 💖🙏🌻

I follow about 12 gardening channels and this one is my favorite. Overall I learn the most basic things to do from Gary and so many are quite inexpensive and less difficult, aggravating, or stressful. I have three of these compost piles going at the same time, but I used pallets to frame out my bins. I fill them with lots of leaves, food waste from the family, a ton of coffee, garden waste, cardboard, and shredded paper that doesn't have colored ink or plastic. Good stuff! My goal is to buy as few bags of soil as possible.
@THERUSTEDGARDEN

Thanks so much. Nice on the 3 piles. After they are going for a while, you save so much on soil and bagged organic fertilizer. And the garden is healthier. Thanks for this explanation. I decided to just do this though I wasn't completely sure how it would work out. I have a bin I built with scrap wood for composting but haven't been keeping up because of back pain and time constraints. It sat empty for over a year. I found a good system to collect and shred leaves using my lawn mower and I'm really pleased with my results just before our first winter weather happening today. Seeing this video gives me so much hope that I finally hit on a good idea to help organize my system. Subscribed!

Grew up under a canopy of 100 ft pecan trees and this is exactly how we composted all those leaves and grass clippings. Mowing and bagging helps speed up since broken up. We would drop in the center some fresh compost and veggie peels. Have to chuckle when I see the cute little compost tumblers.

I just use a very large, oblong shaped heavy-duty plastic bag, that is zippered(bag is 12mil thick tarpoline material). It holds ~15-20 cubic foot of material. Keeps the rain out when I don't want it. I shred the leaves beforehand with a purposed leaf shredder... and turn the material 2 times/month. I throw in my excess red wigglers from my vericomposting bins, and within 6 months, have beautiful, dark, ready-to-use leaf mold+ castings. I have no idea what this bag I use was originally purposed for, but it works awesome for this purpose.

One thing to keep in mind when collecting leaves is that leaves are a really important resource for native bugs and small animals to hide or hibernate over winter. If you can, leave some leaf piles in different areas of your yard to ensure everyone has a safe place to hide throughout the winter.

This is also a good time to create over-winter red wiggler worm bins for gobs of vermicompost come spring. Keep the bins above 60 degrees to keep them working during the winter. (Worm death occurs at about 40 degrees.) Check periodically to feed & moisten. Best advice is to just let them work without pawing through the bin. My indoor bins run from Oct- April with little fuss.

FASTER and easier - use thicker wire fencing that can stand up on its own. Make a circle with about 15 feet (makes a bin about 4 feet across) and use carabiner clips to hold the ends of the wire together. Toss the leaves into the bin and leave them. When you need the compost, undo the clips and unwrap the cylinder.

I had shredded leaves in an old raised garden bed for a long time. I went dig around and check the progress and a bunch of small flying bugs came out. I'm guessing they were gnats, is there anything I can or should do about it?

Hi Gary. I drove through my neighbourhood for the last 2 days getting lots of brown bags of leafs.. I made a cage like yours.. It's almost full . What do I do with the rest of the full brown paper bags. I really don't want to put the leafs into plastic bags $ , with holes in it.. Everything so far has been FREE.. Thank you for helping us with our gardens...

The leaf pile should collapse. Soak it down. It may take a couple weeks but you can add the rest of the leaves then. If you have room a 2nd pen is good. Hi Gary.. I made another cage , it's full now to. I ended up with 100 brown bags of leafs. Lol Shredded with the lawn mower. Here in Canada today is our last day for nice weather. We are to start getting snow this week. Garden Hose is going inside now.. Couple of questions .. Should I put a tarp around the cage. ? Would that keep moisture in? And is it to heat up .? The Temperature is up to a 150゚ in the cage. Thanks for all your help .

I left a little broken plastic planter on top of the leaves yesterday. And all this yellowish stuff has like climb up the pot to.. It's really hard to describe to you.. It's really funky looking.. I have 6 Rubbermaid bins of Red Wiggler Worms inside my house. I no, if worms don't like something, they won't go near it. They get shredded a bit from the tractor mower but its not a must. Only have leaves like oak leaves need shredding. Chopping any organic matter up does speed up the process, if you have the time. How do you keep tree roots from growing up into it and “eating” all your compost/leaf mold. We have limited space (open growing sunlight areas) and need to use understory compost sites. I use the blue tarps under my leaf coral, I have done this for ten years and the worms still find their way into the coral. My compost corals are right next to oak and cherry trees and I have never had roots grow up into any compost coral. I use horse panels that require no t post. Works the same way as Gary's system. I started the first year with four corals and harvest two of them at end of 10 to 18 months. The other two are ready to harvest the next growing season. I live in North Central Florida and it can take from 10 to 18 months for the leaves to break down. Leaf Mold is great compost, I have grown strawberries in 100% leave mold with great harvests. I have over 100 oak trees so I have an abundance of free organic leaves in which to make lots of leaf mold compost.

They are thick. You can add grass, even a 50 50 mix. It probably would heat some, might smell a tad but it gets them going. Also chopping them up helps. I shred my oak leaves by running the lawn mower over them, gathered in my driveway, without the bag attachment. A few passes over shreds them small. When moving the shredded leaves into the pile, I periodically add water. Water won’t easily penetrate or exit the pile. The following spring it was amazing to see the pockets of acorns that germinated in the shredded, broken down, moist oak leaves. A short root and sprout out of each acorn. Wish I could post a pic of the mass of roots and sprouts. The moist shredded leaves promoted fungal growth in the pile and those leaves decomposed in more like a year. I spread them over my beds and they preserve moisture in the beds and protect the soil surface, before integrating eventually.

I gather over 100 bags each year, they are great for mulch but attract little roaches as well. I have beautiful live oaky that are 100 years old and beautiful. But the work is tremendous

I saw another video where guy put the leaves in a trash can and mulched them with a weed eater...they break down faster!
