Todd discovers that his 1924 Graflex Auto RB likely has an important history--it may have been owned by photographers and filmmakers Martin and Osa Johnson.
Images from LOC.gov and Wiki Commons.
Check out the wonderful collection of Martin and Osa Johnson photos at www.safarimuseum.com.
Great help from www.Graflex.org.

Mr. & Mrs. Johnson are also well known among vintage aircraft aficionados as they flew around Africa in a Sikorsky S-39CS... of which there is a replica with the same giraffe paint scheme that regularly visits air shows. What a great artifact! Be sure it goes to a museum some day after your time with it has ended.

They led quite a life! I have been in touch with their museum in Kansas.

The Johnson’s had a large number of Graflex’s. They tended to keep several spares for their expeditions. In the graflex advertising from the teens and twenties they have a couple pictures of their multiple graflex’s. Typically auto, auto RB’s, naturalist, series B, series C, and several speed graphics.

Nice. How do you know so much about the Johnson's cameras? I really would like to learn more about them.

Now that is really cool. I'll have to look up and read about the Johnson's. Thanks

Definitely look them up. Awesome couple during an age of adventure. I'm about to focus on getting this camera repaired and working!

By the time the Graflex Super D came along, the Dust Bowl was history.

Thank you, Tom. I'm about to throw down to get it repaired. I just watched a wonderful documentary about Dorothea Lange from PBS. I think it was on Amazon Prime. Check it out.

Great video! I have one of these RB autos from 1922. It's the best of the RB's since it takes relatively short lenses like the Dallmeyer Pentac 8 in f/2.9 , but it also takes longer lenses up to 420mm due to it's ~11 inch bellows travel. The bellows travel also comes in handy for macro shooting. I've set up mine with a grafmatic 6 sheet film back and an angled finder from a Fuji GX680 similar to how 20th century camera does his.

Nice! This one will need a new shutter, so I am on the hunt. Probably new bellows also. I'm gearing up to shoot it for the first time.

@@FilmCameraObsession Rebuilding the shutter is a pain. I didn't factor in the stretch that comes from the tension springs so I can only get one shutter speed indexed right. The bellows are also a pain but less so. I used the material from Thorlabs: www.thorlabs.com/thorproduct.cfm?partnumber=BK5

It is a amazed camera, and always wanted one BUT, I decide it to get a 4x5 Speed Graflex from late 1949 - 1950 as it came with a case, lots of holders, and filers, and Flash Gun in which I do believe that I can still get Flash Bulbs. And I also have a 1933 Foth TLR 120 camera that has a Focal Plane Shutter. But it only goes up to 1/500 second, and still figuring it out to get 1 second exposure... Good Video....

Thank you, Alex, and sorry for the delay in my response. I think I will be shooting this camera this weekend. I only have one back and I'm not so eager to load film in a dark bag in the field. Do you get to shoot the Speed Graflex much?

I just bought a 4/5 Speed Graphic. About a 1942 model from a collection. I wanted it for scenic’s. I love the fact that I can hand hold this 4/5 with a 3 cell flash. Looking for filters especially red that I can use. If anyone can point me in the right direction it would be appreciative.

Beautiful camera. A piece of history :) How much does that thing weigh?
@FilmCameraObsession
@FilmCameraObsession 4 года назад
9 lbs. 5 oz.. A healthy baby weight! There are some cool pages on Flickr. Some folks ramp up the shutter speed and shoot them hand-held. This one will need a little work first.

I have one of these, but the leather hood has split where it folds.

You can use bookbinder’s hinging tape as a temporary fix
