Today we have a broken and beaten up, non-runner Helios (no, I never heard of that brand either) chronograph on the bench. This watch hasn't seen any TLC for the last half century or so but we will try to make it nice and worth wearing again!
Join Stian for a full restoration of the case, movement, dial and hands as we discuss chronographs and Landeron in particular. And we'll find a piece of... yarn?

Hello, Stian. Another hidden gem. Once it was cleaned up, it's remarkable how pristine the movement is. The dial, especially the condition of the chapter rings, is spectacular. Considering how good the underlying condition of the watch actually was, I think that the level of restoration that he did was just right. You didn't alter the watch, you brought it back from a condition of benign neglect. The transformation that you performed reminds me of those guys who resurrect buried Rolexes found in muddy river banks. 😉 Btw, really spiffy electroplating setup you got there. You make replating look easy.

Adding to your story about "pull down". In French Canada, way back when, most toilets were equiped with a chain instead of a rope. So the expression "tirer la chaine" basically "pulling the chain" is still with us among many families.
@emmarogers2573

Some of these toilets / cisterns still exist (certainly in parts of Australia, anyway), so you could say that "pull down the toilet" is still a valid thing to say even now.

Really nice job on this one. And I agree : old pieces should look a bit of their age. That is, unless they really are too far gone. Then, it's no longer really a restoration and recreating to a new condition can make sense. Nekkid's work on cases looks excellent, for instance.
@VintageWatchServices
@VintageWatchServices 2 года назад
Thanks a lot! I think the main difference is that Nekkid seems to focus on watch repair while I actually focus on selling watches. Thus the watches I get on my bench are in general already in quite good condition, otherwise I wouldn't buy them. And if a watch is in good, original condition, most vintage collectors would agree you shouldn't do too much to them. I am however changing this up a bit, buying beat up watches only for making videos of restoring them, so I'll go a bit further on some future watches. Nekkid is certainly much better than me at case restoration though 😉

@VintageWatchServices

Thanks for watching! It hasn't been quite 80 years since the last time the watch was cleaned, but if a watch is properly closed it should stay pretty clean for decades. Tiny debris and dust particles will be able to enter, but not hair, sand etc.

Stian, this movement is very unadorned and plain looking. I assume with less embellishments it was in less grand watch brands, or at least in this watch. I had my DNA tested recently for my lineage, and although my Mom was 100% Swedish, and Dad more German...I came out like 97% Scandinavian...Norwegian and Swede, but mostly Norski. It's funny...I didn't think my head was square....

Hi, I have an ORATOR watch with a Landeron mechanism. Some say are 48, some 52. The operation of choro buttons are: Press the upper pusher - starts big second hand and the small right side minutes counter (0-30). Press the bottom pusher - stop the counting. Press it again - reset the counter OR press the upper pusher - the counting is resumed. Question for you as a fan: it is a Landeron 48 or a 52? Thanks
@VintageWatchServices
@VintageWatchServices 2 года назад
Hello Dan, sounds like you have a nice watch! The Landeron 52 was a pillar wheel chronograph, which would be operated as most other chronographs: the top pusher starts and stops the mechanism, the bottom pusher resets it. Thus yours is probably a 48 (or one in the 48 family).

I agree with @Bullnose. A "respectful" restoration. I would find it interesting to see one brought to factory finish, so to speak, from a pretty beat up state. The buried Rolexes and Patek Phillipe videos are so sad to watch. There's a Tissot LeLocle I swear has been burned, smashed, buried, and waterlogged MANY times for restoration videos. Suddenly, it's pristine again...after 3/4 of its parts were replaced. Thanks for your content.

Thank you for gold plating the case, as your typical wont is to leave the older ones looking rather forlorn. Now about that black spot at eleven o'clock--couldn't just brush on a little gold enamel to cover it up? Just kidding. Look at this, 11K subs and counting. You and Mr. Nekkid are the two most enjoyable watchmakers in my opinion.
@VintageWatchServices
@VintageWatchServices 2 года назад
Thanks so much, Cory! The difference with this watch and most of my other watches is that this one I bought simply for this project. Most of the watches I buy are already in very nice condition visually, so I mostly just service them. Also, the gold plating on this one was so far gone that there wasn't really any other option. Gold plating is a tricky thing, as new gold plated watches typically have a 20 micron layer of gold, which is very difficult to achieve without industrial level plating machines and also inhibitively expensive. So there's a lot to consider before re-plating a watch!

Is it mostly just sweat and skin cells that make it into the watch? Maybe it’s owner enjoyed working in the garden. If you hadn’t mentioned your wife and the spot at 11, I would have agreed with you. Now it stands out. Lol. Still a very beautiful watch. Thanks for the video.

Greetings Stian, beautiful job. What was that goober on the dial at 11 o'clock? And why there? How/why does a dial deteriorate? I think you did the right amount of restoration. I've seen watches that needed more restoration than the individual wanted to give it claiming the "patina" was important but to me the dial just looked bad. I've also seen some beautiful dial restorations. I suspect as you gather more and more tools you get more inclined to use them to polish and subsequently re-plate cases. I certainly won't have to worry about that for a while. Cheers!
@VintageWatchServices
@VintageWatchServices 2 года назад
Hello Gary, thanks for that! Dials degrade layer to layer, and the top layers are typically clear varnish, sprayed on to protect the underlying patters, print etc. The dial material is generally brass although there are also silver, gold, stone etc dials. The dial itself does thus not rust as a general rule. The typical damage to a dial is to the varnish layers, and this can be discoloration, flaking etc. That's what happened here, the varnish has become dirty and that dirt has set in the varnish. The only way to remove it would be to remove the varnish, but that would result in a much ligher spot. And between a darker spot and a ligher spot, the darker spot looks better in my view :)

Btw kind sir. Stop showing off your fancy watch cleaner. Some of actually still have to get up and move to the other stations.. sigh... Haha! I am of course joking. But not about the different stations.. 👹 Okay may I ask what you use on watch bracelets that you can not seem to get off a watch? I mean if you get one side of the spring bar but not the other side? And the lugs can take a beating. I have so you know , a pair of Bergeon springbar tweezers ( no luck with them over priced pieces of #%!) No luck with the Horotec spring bar pliers actually I think it's a Bergeon as well? I have to look.. I have a few watches I wish to remove the bracelet ( to slow the wear on the lugs) and to set them aside for a future sale if I so decide. Besides I prefer leather on some and silicone on others. But some of these high end Suisse watches just are a real pain to remove the bracelet. Some springbars and hairsprings are my kryptonite I tell you...
@VintageWatchServices
@VintageWatchServices 2 года назад
Springbars can indeed be very tricky sometimes if they've sat there for a few decades gathering DNA 😁 I mostly use a screwdriver if I cannot get them out but also use a standard springbar tool with a pin on one end and a fork on the other.

When we purchase watches, we don't do so because they look old and grungy. If you have the opportunity and skills, the restored to as close to new as possible. If not, as it ages further, the watch just looks worse.
@VintageWatchServices
@VintageWatchServices 2 года назад
Thanks for your comment and opinions of course vary! Do you think this watch looks old and grungy after then? An 80 year old watch that looks brand new would feel very fake to me and I believe to most watch lovers. Originality is the most important aspect of value for vintage watches, first and foremost with the dial and then the rest. A refinished dial will greatly reduce the attraction of a vintage watch for most people. And in my view a watch should look coherent, eg an aged dial in a brand new case would again look odd. But that's only my view :)

As for level of restoration, I don’t think there is ever one right answer. An object could have a number of interesting stories based on various combinations of three factors. 1) How good of shape it’s in, 2) What it has been through, and 3) How well it was cared for. I’m with you in that the broad strokes of the second and third factors are the most interesting even if the details have been lost to time. As for the first point, unless it is a defiant survivor that has beat the odds to still be working, I like things to be in good enough shape that my imagination can picture it’s aesthetic appeal when it was new.
@VintageWatchServices
@VintageWatchServices 2 года назад
Thanks, Gavin! It's indeed difficult to determine exactly how far to go, but must of the time the dial will be the deciding factor in my view. If the dial is mint and the case badly beat up, I'd be okay with restoring the case to its original condition. If the dial is badly damaged, it must be refinished. But most of the time you're somewhere in between these scenarios and then it's really a question of philosophy 😊

Sure beats the little circlips they use on so many chronograph pushers. I prefer the threaded and the ones you have on this movement is actually brilliant. It is so weird how many watches have that movement. But depending on who was the bame on the dial is what seems to dictate the price.

Marketing is king 😉 And I also hate those little circlips, they are a true hassle...

Prá mim, restauração é deixar como novo, como se tivesse saído de fábrica.
@VintageWatchServices
@VintageWatchServices 2 года назад

Thanks so much, James! If the spot could be easily removed I would certainly have done so, but it is in the varnish, meaning that removing it would make a bright spot there instead of a dark spot. And then I prefer the dark one :)
