A 300V Switching Power Supply for Vacuum Tube Preamplifiers

I needed a power supply for a Vacuum Tube RIAA Phono Preamplifier . I didn't want to use a standard 60hz transformer because of not only the size, but also the noise and hum it can introduce. I found an existing switching transformer which gave me a good 6 watts of power which is plenty for most tube preamplifiers.

Whats nice is using a switching power supply keeps 60hz away from the high gain circuitry.

I really like your designs and creativity with making these . i would love to buy the raw PC boards if you are of the mind to sell some and your 6U10 tube preamp as well... ????? I just dont feel like reinventing the wheel and i really like your preamp design.. are you selling this completed? i really think you should!

Hi, nice work! Have you considered using a resistor-network voltage divider+ TL431 + opto isolator to do a truly isolated HV power supply?

Yea, This supply had common grounds so isolation wasn't necessary plus its powered from a 12v wallwort. Many of my other switchers such as the one in the tube amplifier design has what you described.

Was this project a success? Approx 1 year ago Blackstar Amplification released the St. James, guitar tube amp describing it as lightweight with no noise or hum. Blackstar swapped the transformers for SMPS. Do you offer these types of modification services? I recently acquired a Marshall JVM 215c. Love the sound but hate the weight and noise.

That sounds like a good business. Getting the 5 to 600v plate voltage is challenging for the transformer design but SMPS for tube amps is very practical . If I was 20 years younger and not retired I would kick out a few designs. Thanks
