Christmas in Baltimore, Maryland 1963. Includes very rare footage of the Baltimore Christmas Parade, Downtown Baltimore Christmas windows and the amazing lights at "Edmondson Village". They use to light up "Edmondson Village" starting Thanksgiving night every year. It was a magical time. Music by "Rick Silanskas".

Edmondson Village was my mom's haunt. How she loved it - all Baltimore - so. Her house was the one with the driveway literally at the end of Edmonson where it joins 40 in that triangle (not the corner house, but next to it). For this year I think she just moved back into town. Previously she had been there all the '50s, and talked about visiting Santa with her friends as teenagers for fun at Hoschild's. Thank you so much for posting!

Such sweet pathos, a place in my mind's eye....A glimpse of my beloved home town, in a different place and time, of Mom and Dad and the people I now only see in my dreams. I swore I would never leave, but unfortunately all that remain are the vestiges of that shadows within my heart. Gone but never forgotten.......

Thanks to the Silanskas, Sr. & Jr.! This was beautiful & magical! I wonder how many of those people in the film may still be with us? I lived in South West Baltimore at the time and would have just turned 10 years old in early December of that year. You have provided me with a video Christmas card which I will now play every year during the holidays from now on! Thank you! And a Merry Christmas to all wherever you may be whenever it comes around next time!

5 minutes isn't enough to honor baltimore it was home from 71 to 84 I still consider it to be my hometown. My lovely angels ask about where daddy grew up and I hate to tell them that hometown is long gone,replaced with crimes, socialism and narcissism. I weep for "charm city"

Don’t weep for us. We love our city. It’s not perfect, but it is home for us. There’s still a lot of beauty in Baltimore. Don’t put us down or feel sorry for us. If you really care, move back, and make a difference.

@@tdpdx Who was that loanshark that Bunko had to bust him because he was charging 11% interest? I'm wondering if those same cops lived to see the likes of Amazon at 24.25%? Now that kind corruption is fox watching the henhouse like the group of BCPD on overtime pay running drugs and prostitution out of an abandoned building and pay off other cop's to keep the money rolling. Or the City Jail having a lot more than the law will allow. That "Gun Taskforce" was great at it's job of taking the winnings of someone from the Horseshoe Casino downtown. You know what the Government says? Crime Doesn't Pay! Unless you do like we do! 🐵

Very moving video.. Baltimore, sallying forth on Thanksgiving to usher in the Christmas season just days after the loss of President Kennedy. Just trying to keep their chin up and a stiff upper lip. Thanks for posting this video.

just watching this brings tears to my eyes, this was perhaps the best year for Baltimore, every joy every year this would bring love joy and peace to every boy and girl who grew up in Baltimore, now today Baltimore is considered one of the most dangerous city to live in 😟😟, to many crimes and violent uproars that it saddens me to think what has become of Charm City. This is the Baltimore that we will always cherish in our hearts forever. ❤

I was only days old when this 8mm film was made by my dad. You can briefly see me in my moms arms. They have both passed away but growing up in Baltimore in the 1960's and early 70's was ... magical. Yes there were many problems at that time but I choose to remember the joy and promise of a city that offered so much. My Grandmother was the infamous Mary Avara who fought against pornography until her dying day. She was a member of the Maryland Motion Picture Censor Board but what I remember most was her small house on Carrolton Avenue, just down the block from Hollins Market. Her home was always opened to ANYONE who wanted or needed help. Race did not matter!!! Everyone knew her as Miss Mary and she helped EVERYONE!!! She taught us to love everyone equally and help anyone in need. I only wish Baltimore would remember that simple sentiment. Like so many others, I miss the simplicity of seeing life through a child's eyes. These images bring back so many of those incredible memories. We moved to Delaware when I was 10 in 1974 and then to Florida in 1983. I have watched the deterioration of our great city from afar but I believe the memories of a child can help us to want a better tomorrow. Let's not give up, or call names... let's try to provide to the children of today incredible memories for tomorrow. Keep the faith. It can get better.

LOL, I remember your grandmother . Used to be all over the news. Tried to get The Block shut down, tried to get the Silver Dollar shut down, tried to get the Exorcist an X rating. Yea, your grandmom was hell raisin' famous Or some would say infamous. Didnt the guy who owned Hustler even go after her once? Took the Board to court IIRC. I don't think most will remember but in Baltimore you could go to XXX rated movies when you were 16 back then. didn't she try to get that changed?

Is your channel name a reference to the Steven King book, "Tommyknockers?" It was a very nice film! I was 3 and we didn't move to the city until 3 years later, but my dad was working as a City teacher at the time and he said they had streetcars! I was able to see some of city in those days visiting relatives in Eastern Baltimore County. I like the 1st comments still can see it in my mind's eye.

I was 12 at the time. We never attended the parade, but would visit the downtown shop windows and Edmondson Village. ANd yes, that was a muted year as we reeled from the death of President Kennedy. The days before greed and speculation killed our cities.

Near what intersection was this filmed? There are shits of City Chevrolet in this film. Where was City Chevrolet?
@ottowes
@ottowes 3 года назад
Most of the film was made in Uptown Baltimore, near 25th Street and Maryland Avenue, known as Charles Village. That was the locale of City Chevrolet. There are some buildings in the clip that are still in use today on Maryland Avenue. The display windows were from the department stores on Howard Street, near Saratoga Street - Hutzler's, Hochschild Kohn, Stewart's and Hecht's, all now out of business. The end of the film is the lights on Edmondson Avenue, from the Edmondson Shopping Center. I may be in error on some of these locations, but after living there nearly my entire life, I'd roll the dice.

Old I know, but City Chevrolet was on Howard Street. But there was also one on Harford Road where we bought our Cadillac in the 70's.
