Captain Chesapeake - WBFF Channel 45 [Baltimore, MD] (Opening & Excerpts, 1979)

Not from Chicago, but still interesting nonetheless, here's the opening moments of the children's series Captain Chesapeake on WBFF Channel 45 in Baltimore, MD.
The show ran from 1971 to 1990, with George A. Lewis playing the title role.
Includes:
Station ID slide (voiceover by ??)
Opening title sequence, explaining how he came to be Captain Chesapeake, with film of him swimming to shore before cutting to the title slide and shots of him looking out at the water, presiding over the ship "Television Hull," and with such characters as Mondy the Sea Monster (voiced by Jimmy Uhrin) (theme music: a 33-1/3 RPM record of "Stumbling" by The Three Suns that was played back at 45 RPM)
The Captain comes out from inside the ship, promising a fun-filled afternoon, and segueing into [a scoped presentation of] the Tennessee Tuxedo cartoon "Snap That Picture!"
A PSA for the benefits of vegetables with bird and flower puppets - created and presented by Shirley Johannesen Levine, Columbia, Maryland, and sponsored by The Maryland Dietetic Association
Captain Chesapeake gives a reminder of where he comes from, and signals six bells meaning "more fun" - leading to:
Opening titles for the Popeye theatrical cartoon "Pitchin' Woo at the Zoo" [1944] with inserted 'a.a.p' (Associated Artists Productions) opening in place of original Famous Studios' opening, up to director, animators and story credits which, along with title, were retained
This aired on local Baltimore TV on Tuesday, June 5th 1979.
About The Museum of Classic Chicago Television:
The Museum of Classic Chicago Television's primary mission is the preservation and display of off-air, early home videotape recordings (70s and early 80s, primarily) recorded off of any and all Chicago TV channels; footage which would likely be lost if not sought out and preserved digitally. Even though (mostly) short clips are displayed here, we preserve the entire broadcasts in our archives - the complete programs with breaks (or however much is present on the tape), for historical purposes. For information on how to help in our mission, to donate or lend tapes to be converted to DVD, and to view more of the 4,700+ (and counting) video clips available for viewing in our online archive, please visit us at:

This brings me full circle. I use to watch the Captain Chesapeake Show on Ch 45 in the early 70's. At the time I watched it, it was '71 to '73 and I lived on Pimlico Rd. Baltimore MD. Baltimore was beautiful back then. Tragedy brought me to NYC that same year of '73 where I grew up.
@1300mikehoward
@1300mikehoward 5 лет назад
@Baltimorehop - I don't remember Baltimore being beautiful in the early 70s, Nw Baltimore was drug and rat infested in the Park Heights area. Now if you went out to Pikesville or Woodlawn and other surrounding counties right outside of Baltimore it was beautiful. Baltimore was heavily invaded by Heroin by the 70s even as a youngster I could look out my back alley and see hand to hand by local teenagers. Most Jews had moved to the Pikesville area and outside of 695 by the 70s and mostly black lived in NW Baltimore migrating from downtown, and Sandtown. Luskin's Foodarama Reads Drugs Cinderella Shoes White Coffee Pot Jr and Leon Pig Pen was some of the popular retailers in the area. I lived on Pimlico Rd too right across from Pimlico Elementary and several other streets throughout a 1 mile radius of Pimlico Rd. 21215, born on Reisterstown rd directly across from the first Mcds I ever eat at! I love me city but beauty i usually seen in old pictures or a new structure live. I love Baltimore tho

The kind of TV that you had to get up and walk over to the TV to change the channel, on a dial? Hehe. I remember it well! PS) Then there was the cable line connected across the LR floor to the TV also, with a hand held 'dial'.

George Lewis was also WBFF's staff announcer and hosted the sci-fi movie show Ghost Host. He is remembered by many people in Baltimore even so long after his death. That C in the 45 logo stood for Chesapeake TV, which was the forerunner to Sinclair Media. And the ship Television Hull was a play on the main location of Baltimore's TV transmitters Television HILL. It also happens to be the studio location. WBFF stands for Balitmore's Finest Features. When the station signed on in 1971 it aired mainly movies, before going the more independent route. WBFF is now Baltimore's Fox station.

BFF was actually for Baltimore Forty-Five (their UHF channel). stations could request specific call letters. hence WMAR (maryland), WBAL (baltimore), WWDC (washington DC), etc. the interpretation "baltimore's finest features" would have been retroactively applied after the call letters specific to the channel were determined.

First cartoon in the set is an episode from "Tennessee Tuxedo and His Tales" called "Snap That Picture" with Don Adams as the voice of Tennesse Tuxedo. He went on to do other roles including Maxwell Smart in "Get Smart", and then he did the voice of "Inspector Gadget" in the animated series. The last cartoon is a Popeye cartoon called "Pitchin' Woo At The Zoo", and this was an AAP TV print when it was distributed by United Artists TV. If you have not seen these two, check out the first one.This one is a restored version with the bumper included. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-4RMZJDQfFxU.html And then, the second one, and thankfully it contains the original Paramount titles instead of the AAP opening and closings. www.dailymotion.com/video/x3pzqo9

"Captain Chesapeake" ran Channel 45 weekdays from 1971-97. George Lewis, a longtime staff announcer, was the host. It actually aired the very first day 45 went on the air. In addition, Lewis was also the host of "Ghost Host Theater" on Saturday Nights. Lewis and Bill Lefebvre were the original voices of Channel 45. The call sign for 45 meant "Baltimore's Finest Features"; the station was known for showing classic movies on the air, whether you watched "The One O'clock Movie" or "The Prime Time Movie". The original logo resembled the letter C, for Chesapeake Television, Inc., which morphed into Sinclair Media. 45 was an independent station from 1971-86, when Fox joined as an affiliate, it was known as FOX 45.
