Quick story if I may (scroll past if bored): I am married to a beautiful, amazing woman, who also came with a beautiful, amazing 9 year old daughter. Love this kid to death, but being a stepdad can be tricky when trying to find common interests. So I get up this morning before everyone, just hangin' out watching your latest video when Ali comes down the stairs and flops down on the couch. She got so into the video. Asking questions, making comments. After it was over I said, "You wanna watch something else?" She said, "More of this guy!" So we just spent the last two hours, just me and her binging a ton of your videos; her choosing each next one. I can't tell you how exciting it was that I found common ground with this little one I love so much and it came from your videos. Thank you for all that you do and the content and inspiration you provide. (P.S. Ali also said that she loves the music in your videos)

that’s the sweetest thing in the world! it took me about 22 years to find common ground with my stepfather…we never really got along, having grown up totally differently, him being a very “regular” person and me being very artistic and deeply analytical, but finally we’re starting to find some ways to interact that don’t piss each other off. i think moving out helped 😂 we’re finding common ground in being responsible and taking care of the needs of those around us, something we do individually for different people now. it’s weird to say it feels like he’s proud of me and for some reason i give a shit! i’m so happy for you that you were able to find something so early on with your stepdaughter! lean into it as much as you can. I wish i had this newfound friendship with my stepfather when I was 9. it would have saved me from a ton of difficulty living at home and mental health issues throughout my teens and early 20’s. maybe it’s time to go out and get a jigsaw ;)

I’m really tired of seeing “make this super simple beginners only” projects made by people with a full shop full of elaborate machines. Thank you so much for demonstrating a basic project with ACTUALLY basic tools and tricks for people who might just be getting started… I’ve watched many of your videos and I appreciate your content.

projects like these are great for veteran woodworkers too that might need some motivation and an excuse to get back in the shop. I know I run out of inspiration from time to time and need an easier project to get something in the 'win' column

I’m late to the party here, but you’re spot on! It’s good to push your comfort level, but from a 63 year olds viewpoint, I find that constantly raising the bar has actually pushed me away from my woodshop! When we let a hobby get to the point that it antagonizes us, it’s time to reevaluate! There’s a lot to be said for simple, straightforward projects, and this project is a shining example of one!

Something that I find interesting, which I think is often overlooked, is how many things you did the same way (or basically the same way) in both builds, regardless of which set of tools you were using.

Nice looking stools, David. Not being a Billionaire Woodworker, I like the first version. I love it when you make these simple woodworking projects. You are correct (as always). These stools will make an excellent Christmas gift. Every home needs a stool or two. Sometimes it's hard to reach that stuff on the top shelf that you are hiding from the kids (or from your spouse as the case may be)!

Drilling a hole at the apex of the triangles on the legs will prevent a split appearing there in the future. It's easier to drill the hole first then cut the triangle to it. It's the same reason why airplane windows don't have hard angles. Hard angles accumulate stresses and cause splitting.
@jkingofthechicken2217
@jkingofthechicken2217 Год назад
Also, when drilling the dowels for the legs don't drill them all at the same angle. If you look at them from the side they should form triangles. This will better resist the top being pulled off.

@jaymzx0
@jaymzx0 2 года назад
I hate it, too. I can never keep the foot planted squarely on the material, or I try to navigate turns too tightly and the blade just kinda screws off at whatever angle it feels it wants to. Most of my cuts need to be sanded/filed/planed back into square. His comment about the saw pulling itself into the work was interesting. I can't recall seeing that, but maybe it was just my frustration dulling my senses. I think I'll take out a board tomorrow and casually hack it up with the jigsaw just for old time's sake.
