A Beautiful Mind (2001) Made Me Cry!

I suffer from schizoaffective disorder, a combination of schizophrenia and bipolar. I love this film because it is the best description of schizophrenia from the sufferer's POV that I've seen. It is true that one can get used to hallucinations (although mine aren't actually people) as some can offer a form of companionship or comfort. What the viewer experiences upon discovering the truth is also true to tackling schizophrenia and coming to learn what is and what is not real. And managing the illness is very much like how Nash did it -- he chose to recognise, analyse and reject the hallucinations. I had a psych for 23 years who helped me get to that. Meds help keep most symptoms under control, but the other 80% of the work is done by tolerating and recognising the truth about them, and paying them no heed, They do come back with force when I am under extremes of stress but most of the time I can now live a more-or-less good life. Thank you for reacting to this gem of a film. Not many reactors have tackled it. I should also let you know it is sometimes used in mental health services as a form of inspiration to mental illness sufferers. We sometimes need to remind ourselves that we are human and that life can be worth it.

Nash ran away many times, was often missing for months. During all of these phases his wife did all she could to find him and care for him. What a woman.

If you rewatch this film, look carefully at the scenes when Nash is with his hallucinatory characters. With the exception of his friend throwing the desk out the window (which I think was actually done by Nash) they don't react to the external world. For instance, when on the grass, the little girl is running around but even though she runs through a group of pigeons on the lawn, the birds do not react to her.

Thank you so much for reacting to A Beautiful Mind! Not many reactors do. Another movie reactors don't watch is Lorenzo's Oil (1992) which is also based on true events. It's a heart-wrenching movie, especially if you're a parent.

The scene where John says goodbye to Charles always gets me. It speaks volumes to the actors' acting skills when you get so emotional over someone saying goodbye to what can be boiled down to a chemically induced imaginary friend. My hat is off to Russell Crowe and Paul Bettany.

What a heartbreaking and heartwarming movie. I was tearing up right along with you Chris! It deserved the 4 oscars it won, but a shame Russell Crowe didn't win.

Thank you for reacting to this movie! With one of my favorite actors, Russell Crowe. Back then he was on fire as an actor. He’s one of the few actors who have been nominated for a best actor Oscar three years in a row. First was for The Insider, with Al Pacino, next was Gladiator, which he won, and this was his third. Would really love to see you react to more of his work, like Gladiator, L.A. Confidential, Master and Commander, and Cinderella Man.

Thomas King was played by Austin Pendleton, one of the great understated (and underappreciated) actors of his generation. He was Motel the tailor in the original Broadway production of Fiddler on the Roof; he played Frederick Larabee in What's Up Doc? He has done many, many roles, always with sensitivity and just the slightest twinkle in the eye.

Oof! I haven't watched this movie in years, but it still packs the same emotional punch! I saw it in the theater, (in the years when Russell Crowe was basically hitting on all cylinders: this wonderful film, "L.A. Confidential" and "The Insider", etc...) and I left with a teary face. I struggle with severe anxiety, and math class certainly did not help; but you're right: John's brain was different in good and bad ways as all our own.

I haven't seen this movie in years, but I remember my mind being blown finding out that Charles, the mission, etc. weren't real...such a smart and interesting way to introduce the schizophrenia. If you're looking for another Ron Howard movie, I highly recommend the movie Parenthood from 1989. That movie probably features one of my favorite casts in any movie: Steve Martin, Keanu Reeves, Dianne Weist, Rick Moranis, and a very young Joaquin Phoenix! And it's such a funny and heartwarming movie.

I absolutely loved this film. Another great film to watch, in a similar vein, is The Imitation Game. Also, if you love the movie soundtrack, you should watch Sneakers.

Ok and next you have to watch “Cinderella Man” another true story starring Russell Crowe. It’s a beautiful story!!

There are a lot of liberties taken with this... but.... still a very good movie. Got a bunch of people in my family who suffered through schizophrenia. It's rough.

I had a major chip on my shoulder about Russell Crowe when this came out, because I thought (and still do) that Gladiator is overrated, although I'll admit it was beautifully shot. Requiem for a Dream should have won Best Picture. I did watch this film a few years later,. But when I saw it, I simply thought "yeah, what an interesting story..". Still had a beef with Crowe because I hold grudges. So then I went back to school and got a BS and then an MS in Mathematics. Still didn't watch this because I was bent out of shape because Requiem for a Dream should have won Best Picture. Oh, and then I got diagnosed with bipolar disorder and had a bit of a psychotic break last year, but I digress. And now I want to watch this film again. Your reaction was fantastic as always, and I can finally see that Crowe really did do an absolutely smashing job. Requiem for a Dream still should have won Best Picture, but sometimes my judgement gets clouded by things that don't really matter in the long run. Thank you for this.

Love this movie. Excellent reaction. I'd like to suggest the sequels to a few movies you've done... MORE AMERICAN GRAFFITI has the same cast and is a good sequel. Any negative feedback I would attribute to it for simply not being the first movie. But if the 1st film was a 10, I'd give the 2nd film an 8. SILENCE OF THE LAMBS prequel RED DRAGON is also an 8. And the sequel HANNIBAL is a 7. Both worth a reaction. The NIGHTMARE ON ELM ST movies are all good. But I personally prefer the FRIDAY THE 13th movie series. TERMINATOR 3 and 4 make Excellent additions to that series. Also TRON LEGACY. And PSYCHO 2 3 and 4 are great additions to the original. Just like the original, they are mostly suspense driven with a dash of horror. And Anthony Perkins steals the show with his portrayal of Norman Bates in all 4.

One of my top ten favorite movies and so grateful you got around to it. You reaction brought it all back and bravo to you for that. I've seen it maybe 100 times and I think I could watch it 100 more times. It never seems to get old. And the beautiful James Horner score is so brilliantly crafted to the storyline you don't even have to actually see the movie again. Just listening to the soundtrack allows you to relive every emotion. How he missed out on an Oscar for that score is a real mystery to me The bigger mystery, though (to me anyway), is how few there are who seem to know about this movie today as is indicated by how rarely you'll see a reactor reacting to it. So kudos to you again for being one of the few. But this movie is not an exception. It is just one of scads of movies of the same calibre that you younger folk are missing out on. Here is another whose plot is set over the Thanksgiving weekend and would be perfect for your channel this month. It is SCENT OF A WOMAN, the movie Al Pacino won his only Oscar for (and deservedly so). Or if you are interested in another inspirational and heartwarming Ron Howard, Russell Crowe biopic there's CINDERELLA MAN. From what I've seen of your reactions I think you'd love both of these movies. And the scores (both written by Thomas Newman) are exquisite.

While this movie takes some creative liberties with how historically accurate it is, it's still really good. It's also where I first learned of Paul Bettany and how fantastic he is as an actor.

When Brian Grazer, the Hollywood producer who held the option to the Nash books, decided to make a film he was visited by many screenwriters but Akiva Goldsman, who had experienced very troubled people through his childhood (his parents ran a home for those folks) spoke to him and asked him, as an inexperienced screenwriter, if he could write it. Grazer said well, go away and come back with your ideas. Goldsman thrashed out his ideas (the illusions became real etc.) and presented them to Grazer, Grazer listened....and cried...it was so beautiful....and in the film credits they put not screenplay by Akiva Goldsman but 'written by Akiva Goldsman.....

Somehow I've turned the title of this movie in my mind to "My Imaginary Roommate" and the living roommate got an A for the semester because the other one didn't exist--it's like a rule among universities. There's a wonderful sea-battle movie called "Master and Commander: Far Side of the World" starring these same two knuckleheads (Crowe and Bettany) that's worth watching for the spectacle and their relationship.

20:46 "Harvey" was a joke because of the 1950 comedy "Harvey" starring Jimmy Stewart and one you'd enjoy. Josephine Hull who plays his older sister won a well deserved Best Supporting Actress for it. Harvey was referenced as a joke in two other movies you did, Shawshank and Roger Rabbit. Chris you just gotta watch Harvey to get the joke, man. 😁 And it's a good B&W comedy and a real classic too. Can I please very strongly recommend The Man Who Knew Infinity to you? Made in 2015, it is a biopic about Indian mathematician Srinivasan Ramanujan. It stars Dev Patel and Jeremy Irons.with Steven Fry and Toby Jones. It too will make you cry!

Maybe the biggest Oscar snub in history. Best Picture win, Best Supporting Actress for Jennifer, Best Director, all very well deserved. But the reason for it winning Best Picture was largely because of Russell Crowe, who put in a Top 5 all time performance. As good as Denzel was (he's great every time), it's still a huge snub to snub the star of the Best Picture. Fun Fact: Marcy was played by my friend's daughter Vivien Cardone

I saw this in 2003, loved it, i was a huge fan of nash’s & then in 2015, they both die in a freak car accident, a taxi actually coming home from the airport, they were in the back seat with no seatbelts...i was only born in 1976 & even my generation doesnt really wear seatbelts when we’re in the backseat...maybe nowadays, i think its law, i dont know, lol...bycycle helmet laws are weird to my generation too😂🤣😂 ....anyway, yeah, hearing about them dying was a weird day...great reaction & great edit...im now subbed👍👍👍

The Lives Of Others would be another great film where the expression of gratitude is overwhelming. If you get around to watching foreign films....

The actor who played Thomas king was Austin Pendleton. And he did a great job, not stuttering during his lines.

Glad the pen scene got to you and you teared up. I did too the first time and every other time I have seen this. The only person who ever told me they did not like this movie said that he didn't like being fooled by the first part of the movie!!! That was this POINT of the first half, for crying out loud!! Recommend The Insider and The Next Three Days (both Crowe movies....the former has him playing a real person, too.

The scene of Nash playing and getting frustrated with the game of Go has me perplexed, as Go should be a game that he would appreciate. The scene itself may present the explanation as to why, since the board presented doesn’t look like a real game of Go. Could it be that he was ‘taught’ the game by someone who didn’t really understand the game (very possible), which would justify him getting frustrated with the flaws introduced by a poor teacher? Or is the board in the film just a ‘set dressing’ mistake, which is meant to ‘represent’ a legitimate game and Nash and friends really had a correct understanding of the game? Unlike Nash, I find Go to be the most interesting game in the world, which is why my RU-vid channel is mostly dedicated to it.

this is my all time favorite movie

I don't have anything interesting to say about this movie, but I just wanted to post and tell you that you are, as a person, doing a fantastic job of selecting movies you should be watching to be a cultured human being. Also, consider Seven Days in May. I know it is a sleeper, but it is Frankenheimer directing a Serling script and I think more people need to remember it.

They don't make movies about the guys who fail at the original idea. ;)

Amazing reaction ♥ I agree about the music at the opening, it feels very fitting for the story. The movie does an amazing job with the material and story. It is heartbreaking to see the pivot from spy codebreaker, to seeing it all exposed as not real. 💔And this has got to be one of the best performances I have ever seen. Russel Crowe melts away, and all you see is Nash. Really astounding. I gotta say Paul Bettany's performance as Charles is one of my favorites as well. I watched this reaction over the period of a couple of days. I rewatched the movie during that same period, lol. I kinda chipped away at both! Happy it turned out he was hallucinating all that car chase espionage stuff because I was going to say: this movie took a left turn! It freaked me out that I never put two and two together: you never see the roommate hang out with his other friends! There are all these scenes of the the group partying, but never with the roommate. Ok, "Superman" reaction next!

This movie is Beautiful

The scene where John is on the bed, thinking he has to go back to the asylum and his wife is leaving - no dialogue, just the look on John's face, in his eyes - wow! In his commentary, Ron Howard notes that that is the difference between a great actor and an truly exceptional one...when they can do sooo much with no dialogue at all. Crowe is an exceptional actor.

I see I’m not alone here in having my own mental health journey. I find even more comfort from this channel feeling the rest of the community. ❤ The movies whole concept of controlling mental health with your mind is so compelling and inspirational.

I first saw this movie 20 years ago on my very first date. I was seventeen at the time, and the guy I was dating was eighteen.

Alicia is the real hero of this movie.

What a masterpiece!

When this was made, a young girl (13-ish) was a phenomenon of singing classical music. Her name is Charlotte Church. James Horner wrote the score for this film and wanted to utilize her as part of the orchestra. He did not write a singing part, but wrote it as an instrument and as a part of the orchestra. If a French horn missed some notes, they would have to stop and start over. He did the same with Charlotte, which made the score so ethereal and haunting, like the corners of Nash’s mind. James Horner Died on June 22, 2015. When did you say Nash and his wife died!? 🤔 When this film won it’s four Academy Awards, (Best Picture, Best Supporting Actress Jennifer Connelly, Best Director Ron Howard, Best Adapted Screenplay Akiva Goldsman, ) the real John and Alicia Nash was in the audience. I will never forget that moment.

When I first saw this one in the theaters I don't think I had the proper appreciation for what I was witnessing until now, having read others' comments about the accuracy of its portrayal of the schizophrenic experience. Thanks so much for doing this reaction. All the acting was incredible on all fronts.

I've always liked the line about feeding dreams and nightmares because it doesn't limit the food to thought alone. So many variables apply to mental health, and they mention only a few of them in this film. They apply to every person, not only those diagnosed with a condition.

Golden Rule Fact: To create the "golden" look of the campus scenes early in the film, the filmmakers took a low-contrast stock (Fuji F-400 8582) and exposed it to a colored light before loading it into the camera for shooting. Influencing The Movie Fact: John Nash visited the set, and Russell Crowe said later that he had been fascinated by the way he moved his hands, and he had tried to do the same thing in the movie. He thought it would help him get into the character. The scene towards the end of the film, where John Nash contemplates drinking tea, is based on a true event when Russell Crowe met the real John Nash. He spent fifteen minutes contemplating whether to drink tea or coffee. The Rest Of The Story Fact: John Nash is shown smoking in the film. In reality, he was a militant anti-smoker. While this film is inspired by the life of John Nash, there were elements from his life that were deliberately omitted: 1) he was married twice, both to the same woman (Alicia Nash); 2) in the past, he had several affairs with both men and women; 3) he was arrested by the police by scandal; 4) he fathered a child out-of-wedlock in his twenties; 5) he believed that through his mental illness the extra-terrestrials spoke to him, giving his advanced knowledge by means of a cosmic connection with them; 6) he tried to renounce his American nationality some times, in the belief that the U.S. government pursued him; and 7) he made numerous anti-Semitic comments during his period of extreme mental illness, most of which equated Jews with world Communism. Tragically John and Alicia Nash were killed in a car accident on May 23, 2015, when the driver of a taxi they were riding in lost control of the car and collided with a guard rail and a second car on the New Jersey Turnpike. The NYTimes said that although the two drivers suffered only minor injures, the Nashes were "ejected from the cab" and died. John was 86 and Alicia was 82.

How did he not get an Oscar fir this? So crazy.....
