Fun Fact: The equations seen on the classroom chalk boards are actual equations written by the real-life John Nash. Also, John Nash visited the set, and Russell Crowe said later that he had been fascinated by the way he moved his hands, and he had tried to do the same thing in the movie. He thought it would help him get into the character.

Cinderella Man is another amazing movie from Russell Crowe and Ron Howard. One of my favorite sports movies.

My math teacher showed us this film as a reward for all of us passing a pretty advanced trig test. It was amazing and mind-blowing.

I've watched this movie a few times and it always brings the tears. I have 2 sons that suffer from schizophrenia and one is a paranoid schizophrenic. When you said his wife was "living for a few moments of how it used to be " I wept out loud because that's exactly how it is for the caregivers

I used to see John Nash walking around campus when I was at Princeton. Said hello once. Fascinating guy. Still can’t believe Russell Crowe didn’t win best actor.

True Story: As a young boy the English Paul Bettany (Charles) had a crush on the young American actress Jennifer Connelly (Alicia Nash). To his surprise, many years later he found himself in a film with her called A Beautiful Mind. They were friendly during the filming, but both were seeing other people Before the film was released, they both became single and Bettany and Connelly would talk on the phone occasionally, but it was just friendly Then 9/11 occurred. Connelly was living in NYC and Bettany, now back in England, could not get in touch with her. As time passed, Bettany became more panicked that he couldn't reach Connelly. He was in a frenzy and as he analyzed his feelings he realized that he was in love with Connelly. When he finally got in touch with her, he proposed immediately even though they had yet to even go out on a date. He flew to NYC and they moved in with each other at once. They married in 2002 and have been with each other ever since

I watched this movie over and over, just trying to understand this illness when my brother was diagnosed with schizophrenia about a decade ago. My family and I suffered greatly from my brother having this mental illness and the worst part is that nobody understands it. It is absolutely terrifying and at times I even questioned own sanity when my brother was having his psychotic episodes. This movie brings back very sad and depressing memories, but it’s still such a beautiful film.

Sadly John Nash and his wife were killed in an accident in 2015, they were passengers in a cab, on their way home from the airport.

I remember watching this move as a teenager and not knowing at all what it was about before hand. It was absolutely incredible and something I wasnt ready for but also will never forget.

You were put into a coma via a large dose of insulin then shocked and at the time was believed to be the best treatment for Schizophrenia (If the patient was deemed strong enough to go through the treatment.) I'm glad my brother, who has schizophrenia, was not born in this era.

Also, you guys are correct, Jennifer, Connelly and Paul Bettany both met on the set of this movie. They didn’t start dating at the time because they were both with somebody, but this is where the met and it later turned romantic.

Hey Daniel and Sam, This movie is so heartbreaking for Nash's wife having to suffer with him and not undestanding what was going on. Alicia is an amazing woman and extremely patient. ------- Not many people would have been able to stand by John Nash for all those years. Speaks to the power of true love. This movie holds a special place in my heart. I saw it in the theater with my mom. As a WV native with a brother who was a math genius and was accepted to Princeton at 16 but ended up going to Williams instead. He developed schizophrenia his sophomore year and ended up leaving school. He unfortunately lost his battle to schizophrenia to suicide three years later. He had electro-shock therapy just like they showed Nash going through.

Did you know…. This film was nominated for 69 major awards through the world. It won 37 of those awards… of which Jennifer Connelly won 13 of the 37 awards. It won Four Oscars for Best Picture Ron Howard and Brian Grazer, Best Director Ron Howard, Best Actress in a Supporting Role Jennifer Connelly and Best Adaptation Screenplay. It was nominated for four other Oscars but did not win. James Horner did this haunting score and was nominated but did not win. He did something quite extraordinary. He wrote the score with a single vocal part, Charlotte Church who was a gifted singer. I think she was around 13 years old when making the score. James Horner wrote her vocal part exactly as a musical instrument, not a singer. So when a horn or string would mess up, Horner would stop and work on that part. He did no different with Charlotte. If she missed a note, he would cut them off and make sure she had the part correct and continue rehearsal and recordings. When it was nominated for all of the Oscars, the real Mr. John Nash and Mrs. Alicia Nash were in attendance as invited guests. How beautiful! Thanks for “A Beautiful Reaction!”

I can't help but cry at the ink pen scene when John is honored. Good spotting the pigeon scene. I didn't notice until Ron Howard explained it.

I adore the scene where Nash start working with the kid in the library...a positive anchor to reality. First positive relations with someone other than his wife and old college friend, it's good and it helps !

If I'm not mistaken, whenever the three imaginary characters appear in a scene, we always hear them just before we see them, suggesting that they begin as an auditory hallucination before John's mind gives them visual form.

This was a wonderful movie. Definitely threw you for a loop throughout. John Nash and his wife both tragically died in a car accident in 2015. What a horrible ending to both of their lives.

I think the ark with Hanson is one of the best points two brilliant arrogant men competing and pushing each other. But when Nash falls his rival offers him a helping hand. Just because men have rivalries which push us to excel doesn't mean we can't respect each other.

Hey Daniel and Sam, Nash's schizophrenia was in full remission in his later years. -------- One of the producer's relatives asked him if they could depict him as continuing the medication, as it would help the perception that patients should keep taking their medication. -------- It's one of the biggest problem doctors have in treating schizophrenia patients. Nash agreed if it could help people in the future.

Some of those early treatments in psychiatry were brutal. The mind is so complicated in its structure. The saying "there's a thin line between genius and madman ".....there's a movie with Jamie Foxx and Robert Downey Jr called the Soloist that tackles the schizophrenia issue. Jamie Foxx plays as a brilliant violinist who has schizophrenia.

The "Harvey" line is a reference to the movie Harvey with James Stewart. I'm sure most of you already knew that. I just like to hear myself talk.

And thank you for appreciating Russell Crowe’s amazing performance. -------- From 2000 to 2010 Russell Crowe was on an acting run only the top actors of all time have managed. --------- In fact, he’s one of the few actors nominated for a best actor Oscar three years in a row. -------- The first was in 1999 for “The Insider”, next was for “Gladiator”, which he won, and in 2001, “A Beautiful Mind” was the third. --------- You both loved Crowe in “Master and Commander” where Crowe teams up again with Paul Bettany, and “Cinderella Man”. ------- That would be a great movie would be so great a reaction and another true story directed by Ron Howard, set during the Great Depression.

Hansen, John Nash’s nemesis ( and later colleague), is played by Josh Lucas, who played a villain type executive in Ford vs Ferrari, a recommended film if you haven’t already seen it.

Russell Crowe and Paul Bettany have wonderful chemistry together as actors. I am not surprised both teamed up again in Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World.

For her outstanding performance in this film, Jennifer Connely won the best supporting actress Oscar. I am a retired psychiatric nurse and i can safely say that this is the most realistic portrayal of schizophrenia that I've seen in movies. One of the changes from the real history was that Jonathan Nash's delusions revolved around being the king of Antartica. The film makers realized this would be too much of a giveaway, so they changed it to the government plot.

At one point with his friend he makes a reference to Harvey, which is a Jimmy Stewart movie about an alcoholic who has an imaginary friend who is a 6-foot rabbit and it is definitely worth reacting to.

Brian Grazer, Hollywood Producer, held the rights to the official life story book about Nash and wanted to go ahead with the movie. Many screenwriters sought him out to write the script. Akiva Goldsman was by no means a major screenwriter but had been brought up in a place where his parents took care of kids with mental conditions of all kinds, (Goldsman himself was abused as a child too, its on record) so he knew about this stuff. Akiva asked Grazer to let him write it, Grazer said come back to me and pitch me the movie. Akiva went away, thrashed out the ideas you've seen and pitched it. Grazer was so moved he cried. In the credits they paid tribute to Goldsman, where it would normally say 'screenplay by' it says 'written by'. Akiva maintains that the real hero of the movie is Alicia, in real life they split for years but she came back which is given a nod to in the movie in the scene where Alicia says she's leaving then comes back and we get the 'I need to know something extraordinary is possible'. Lastly great credit to the late James Horner for his amazing score which mirrors Nash's condition. Nash apparently himself said (there was criticism about how truthful the movie was, funny when its about schizophrenia) as he left the premiere 'that was my life', not literally, there's a lot of metaphor and representation going on, he actually suffered auditory hallucinations but one genius idea of Goldsman was to turn them into visual ones.

The movie where JARVIS met EDITH. Adam Goldberg and Anthony Rapp who were both in Dazed and Confused. Adam was also in Saving Private Ryan.

Russell Crowe was brilliant in this, the mannerisms, the look in his eyes. And the rest of the cast.

Always loved this movie. Hits me personally because my Mom suffered from schizophrenia. For whatever reason it really kicked in late in her life, her mid 40s. The most accurate thing to me in the movie is how the ill evolve their logical justifications for their delusions over time. It really is an endless cycle of lucidity and falling into delusion and back again. The most “Hollywood” spin to me is how Nash “logics” his way to sanity. Mental health is the most abundant and overlooked issue of our society. These people are cast aside and make up so many of our homeless. This is not an issue these people can “bootstrap” themselves out of and they deserve better from us. Ps: Paul and Jennifer did meet on this movie. Lucky bastard.

I remember rewatching this film about 15 months ago. It used to always make me cry, desperate and happy tears alike, but that time was the last time I watched it... I can never see it with the same eyes again, because the next morning I was told over a phone call that my older sister had just been diagnosed with schizophrenia. Maybe I will be able to watch this masterpiece again someday, but it won't be anytime soon

This is based on life of a real mathematician John Nash. Sadly he and his wife died in a car crash.

Sadly both John and Alicia both died in a car accident in 2015. The movie took some serious liberties with his life, but it's still a fantastic story of a very important man in 20th century history.

Crazy I went to High School with Josh Lucas(Hanson) in the film.Funny how you just know someone is going to go on to big things.It's cool to watch him on the big screen.

So fun fact: Jennifer Connolly was Paul Bettany's dream girl. He started crushing on her at 15 after seeing her in Labyrinth. They met on the set of this movie but were both in a relationship at that time. The events of 9-11shocked Bettany into action and he spent 2 days trying to contact her. When he finally got a hold of her he purposed to her, despite the fact that they weren't even dating. They were married a few years later in 2003.

As stated by others John Nash and his wifed died in a car accident. His son, John Charles Martin Nash earned a PhD in mathematics and was also diagnosed at age 15 with paranoid schizophrenia like his father. He lives in a home and is visted by medical team for continual treament.

The Nash equilibrium and the Nash bargaining solution are just two examples of several breakthrough economical theories that gave John Nash the Nobel Price in Economical Science in 1994. He was a true genius.

Awesome movie, awesome reaction. And now you should be primed for one final magnificent Ron Howard / Russell Crowe collaboration. It is biopic, too, this time from the Great Depression era but it is similarly formulated to pull on your heart strings. It's called CINDERELLA MAN and also stars Rene Zellweger and Paul Giamait (who got the Oscar for his performance. The Thomas Newman score is also exquisite.

This is one of my favorite movies of all time. Winner Best Picture. Winner of Best Actress (Jennifer Connelly- the girlfriend from Top Gun- Maverick). She was incredible in this. And it should've been Russell Crowe's 2nd straight Oscar for Best Actor after winning for "Gladiator" the year before (which also won Best Picture). True story too. Tragic how the Nashes died just a few years ago in 2015. They both arrived back in NJ after he won the King of Norway's Abel Prize and were supposed to have a limo service, but they arrived 5 hrs.' early, took a taxi, instead, and the idiot driver crashed and killed them both. As for Ron Howard, he ALWAYS uses his family in his movies so, yes, that was his daughter, Bryce Dallas Howard- most recently from Jurassic World trilogy and Gwen Stacy in Spiderman 3. In Apollo 13, Ron Howard's other true story masterpiece along with this one- his brother, Clint Howard played the role of flight controller Seymour Liebergot. His father played a priest, his mother played Jim Lovell's mother, and his wife and Bryce were crowd members. One thing I was surprised about is that you guys didn't recognize his imagined roommate was Paul Bettany or VISION from the MCU (Wanda Vison, etc) I'm still thinking you guys haven't gone on the MCU journey yet. Still looking forward for you guys (one day)to get into those brilliant movies with your always spectacular reactions although at this point you're 30 movies and 15 tv shows behind. :) EDIT: I wrote that comment before you DID say you recognized Paul Bettany at the end of your reaction. Bettany and Connelly DID meet on the Beautiful Mind shoot (2001) but didn't start dating until after it was done. They got married in 2003- so 20 years and counting already. Interestingly, Jennifer Connelly plays Karen- the A.I in Spiderman's suit in the MCU and, of course, Paul Bettany, before becoming Vision, was J.A.R.V.I.S - the AI in Ironman's suit. The MCU people say Karen (Connelly) is J.A.R.V.I.S (Bettany)'s wife (because the 2 are real life husband and wife).

Despite being historically inaccurate, it does show how serious paranoid schizophrenia really is. John Forbes Nash, Jr and his wife Alicia got married in 1957 but divorced in 1963, as she couldn't handle his condition. In 1968, Nash's mother died and asked Alicia if he could stay with her until he got back on his feet, while dealing with his condition. In 1970, they remained friends then in 2001, they remarried. On May 23, 2015, after visiting some friends in Norway, Nash and Alicia took a cab from Newark Airport, where the driver lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a guardrail. They were killed instantly.

I love this movie so much and Jennifer connaly won the oscar for best sapporting actress that year which is amazing. It's amazing story about an amazing man and the things he went through but the true hero is his wife who despite it all stayed by his side and tried to be there for him no matter what he was going through. Sadly they both died in a car crash in 2015 with his wife. He was 86 and his wife was 82 years old

Great reaction. Russell Crowe made some incredible movies back then. I agree that you should definitely watch Cinderella Man, with Crowe and Renee Zellweger, and directed again by Ron Howard. Yes, it’s a sports movie (based on a true story), but it’s also the story of a man’s love for his family. Not enough people react to it.

The Nash Equillibrium of one of the key concepts of Game Theory and (although the "nobody wins if we all try to get with the blonde" explanation isn't even an example of it) it has been applied to international relations, warfare, patterns of traffic flow and highway design, contract negotiations, education, the structure of grant programs and auctions, the design of electrical grids, the NFL and other sports drafts, evacuation planning in emergencies, network design for the Internet and telephone services (plus the other topics they mention and a *lot* of others)...basically anywhere you have multiple parties making decisions or take actions that could potentially interfere with the decisions other people/actors are making. John Nash is a problematic guy in ways this movie doesn't go into, but the Nash Equilibrium is an important development in mathematics, and Game Theory is a particularly readily applicable branch of mathematics.

Great reaction guys! Another noteworthy film in this vein is "The Imitation Game" starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Keira Knightley. It is based on the story of the mathematician Alan Turing during World War II.

You guys need to seriously react to the film “Glengarry Glen Ross”. It’s absolutely a near perfect film with an amazing ensemble. Al Pacino, Kevin Spacey, Ed Harris, Jack Lemmon, Alan Arkin, Jonathan Pryce and Alec Baldwin.

Great movie I saw many years ago. One reason I love your reactions is revisiting these "classics" is I don't need to spend 2 hours watching them, while at the same time share the experience with people who haven't seen it.

For me the big reveal of the movie was not he scene with Dr. Rosen and Charles, it was the scene where Alicia walks into the shed. Every single thing prior to that moment-the psychologist, the asylum, the lack of evidence of the mailbox or the keypad to synchronize with his implant-even the housing records that indicated John lived alone at Princeton-all of them could be easily explained by 1950’s paranoia. Indeed, it’s not so different form what the Witness Protection Program does today. So when Alicia heard the muffled radio signal coming from the shed, I got ready for the big reveal-at last she would learn that he wasn’t crazy after all! Imagine my shock.

I had forgotten just how great this movie is, thank you for the opportunity to rediscover it.

If neither of you have never looked at Nash's work beyond this movie, you could watch a short video demonstrating one of his matrixes within game theory. Try "The Nash Equilibrium". It is technically math. But, I suspect you'll find it a bit more intuitive and easy to get. It's certainly worth 5 or 10 minutes of a long life to see what he started.

On Ron Howard's commentary, when the scene happens when Nash is sitting n the bed, thinking he has to go back to the hospital, there is little or no dialogue. Howard said then that the difference between a good actor and a great one is how much they can convey without saying a word, just in his eyes and posture. That was Crowe being a great actor. One of his more recent movies (totally overlooked by many) is The Next Three Days with Brian Dennehy, Liam Neeson!!! Really good one for your future reactions list!

I just noticed you two seem to be casting a larger net than most reviewers. The Great Escape, this movie, Fargo, Cape Fear, ... Great job. There are so so so very many great overlooked movies. The Road to Predition, Million Dollar Baby, the pair (The Hustler, and The Color of Money), just to scratch the surface.

I've had two aunts who lived with schizophrenia, plus a couple of friends. Treatment has come a very long way, but the way that people have been treated in the past has been medieval. Today, people living with mental illness are still entitled to their basic civil rights. In some cases, the medication has been worse than the illness. Medications have gotten a lot better, but it's not unusual for people living with mental illness to refuse medication and treatment (and unless that treatment and/or medication is court-mandated, it is their right to do so). Today, we know how to teach most people how to live with mental illness and have good, fulfilling lives, to work, to raise families, and so on. Sometimes medication and therapy is an intrinsic part of that. There are some very successful modern programs to help people reach that point. Unfortunately, many people (doctors, therapists) are still stuck in the old ways of doing things. And movies like this and "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest", and so on, unfortunately, help create stigma which can prevent people from seeking help.

Jennifer connelly is married to Paul betany ( roommate). Oh, she won an Oscar for this. They meet on set during this . But been married since. Their eldest is in college. ( very smart kid, apparently) The family came up during the Johnny Depp trial . The family. We're invited to Johnny's private island. And during dinner, Amber and the boy disagreed about something. ( academic or political) and she lost it ( he was 15 or so at the time ). Apparently, it was bad enough for Johnny ( her husband ) to make her leave. . But at the trial, Johnny said he was an incredibly smart and good kid . Obviously, Jennifer and Paul were not fans of Amber, lol 😆

Russel Crowe starred in many great movies, of course, but I have a soft spot for "A Good Year" (2006), It's a heartwarming, romantic comedy with a great cast and beautiful score. Unfortunately, this film is largely forgotten these days. What a shame!🍇🍷❤

As movies tend to do, this movie took some liberties. If you read about John Nash's life, his hallucinations didn't take place in the elaborate manner this movie shows. He started to hear voices when he was 36. Before that he had paranoia.

I'm watching the 1993 action crime thriller JUDGEMENT NIGHT where three men, friends since childhood, and ones young brother, are on their way to a boxing match in Chicago but take a wrong turn in a rundown neighborhood where they witness a murder and must fight to survive. Directed by Stephen Hopkins. Starring Emilio Estevez, Cuba Gooding Jr, Stephen Dorff, Jeremy Piven and Dennis Leary. I highly recommend it.

What an amazing but quite underrated piece of cinema! I used to watched this film all of the time on DVD when I was growing up. If I recalled correctly, it was my dad that bought it. I had such a love and respect for the film. Still do! The life of Professor John Nash was awe-inspiring and yet, tragic. The man was a genius ahead of his time and little did he know... the people he believed was his friends was all in his mind the whole time. That was a twist I did NOT see coming when I first watched it and my heart felt like it was crushed! Its also one of the few films to ever get me emotional and cry. I felt so bad for him. Sadly, John and his wife died in a car accident eight years back. The musical score by composer James Horner (who also passed away a few years ago) was one of my favorite parts. Its very beautiful and sublime soundtrack. Such a good movie man. They don't make them like they used to!
