In this video post, I explore a very interesting part of Hasidic clothing: the silver decorative strip found on the men's prayer shawls. I talk to Elena Solomon, who, together with Lilly Homer is writing an encyclopedia entry on the special craft involved in making these decorative garments. It's an art style unique to Ashkenazi Jews, and it's called 'shpanyer arbet'.

There is a blog post called S if for spinning Shpanyer that mentions the Israel Museum has a video of a man spinning it. Perhaps it's worth looking into.

This is very interesting! I have only recently discovered your channel and have been bin watching since. In Germany (South) and Austria (maybe other countries too that I am not aware of) there are bonnets as part of national costume for women. It is known that this handcraft comes from Shpanyer Arbet(Spanier Arbeit). Only few people still know how to make them and make them by hand. It is seen as local Folklore. Like many things in Europe it is interesting that Spanier Arbeit is also of Jewish origin. I live in the far east of Austria, near Vienna and still there are very many Yiddische words and sayings here still used in daily live/speech.

Stumbled across to your very interesting talk about Spanier Art, I remember hearing that Soroh Schneiror made the lace collars to distinguish between the pupils and the teachers who more often than not were the same age as their students. Possibly because to have worn a cap and gown would have been חוקת הגוי.

Does the machine create the "rope" of silver which is then couched down in the patterns? If that is how it works, is the machine similar to a kumihimo braid? (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kumihimo)

13:27 she says sfardi Jews didn't go to Eastern Europe. Legend goes that a lot of Romanian Jews were originally sfardi (a lot of Romanian Jews do have dark complexions. My Romanian great grandfather always mentioned that he had sfardi blood. It did come up on my heritage DNA test.

I'm not certain but I would guess the surname Portugal of the skulener rebbe means a sephardic origin.

Definitely today's days each chasidish community has different type of atarahs. In my community they don't wear silver. I'm from a Lithuanian chasidus so that means they were too poor to afford it. 😂

The most beautiful woman on the medioric spectrum today is Frieda the Yafala dewilliamsburg…😍 I’m NOT demanding at all. The ONLY thing I demand is that a woman DOESNT interfere with my relationship with Hashem! Other than that I’m NOT a shtikler for the tules! The TELESCOPE , in my opinion is the best way to view DIVINITY! Trying to view what’s divine through a microscope will blur your vision of what’s divine. Have a great day always love…😇
