In short, if you want a solid taste at the history of modern Korean cinema. Just watch Song Kang Ho’s entire career.

Train to Busan was my first korean film, but Parasite was my first favorite. From there I’ve done a deep dive into the New Korean Cinema. This year alone in 2021 I’ve already seen 5 different korean films, all of which (except A Taxi Driver) were mentioned in this video. Korea very well could be considered my personal favorite country to watch foreign language films from.

Oldboy was my introduction to South Korean cinema, at around 2005/2006 i watched it for the first time, and since then i fell in love with their movies, watched so many great Korean films over the years since then, and rewatched some of them multiple times, some of my favorite movies of all time would be Oldboy, The Wailing, Memories of Murder, New World, The Host, The man from nowhere, Yellow Sea, Mother, Bedeviled, I saw the devil, Burning and so many more, I highly recommend you check these movies out incase you are interested in South Korean movies!

One aspect of Korean films I enjoy is the inherent respect that people show for each other. The bowing is a form of this attribute. Citizens of the US have no idea of this thoughtfulness.

Lee Chang-Dong has a perfect filmography, in my opinion. He started as a writer and his scripts are masterful. He was minister of culture in Capitalist Korea for one year or so. He's legendary, really.

South Korean cinema has to be my most favourite category of movies. I just live how obscure the characters can be, and how filmmakers are not afraid to go full in with the violence and character. They've got such a unique outlook on life and it is defiently clear in their movies, and I so thunk that more people need to be exposed to the movies coming from South Korea Some of my recommendations: -Parasite -Oldboy -Train To Busan -Thirst -Decision To Leave -Mother -The Host -Sympathy For Mr Vengeance -Okja The list is mostly made up of Bong Joon-Ho's movies, and Park Chan-Wook movies, because they are my two favourite south korean directors, as I've seen most of their movies Also, any film with Song Kang-Ho is pretty good. He's a very versatile and serious actor who never fails to stand out

I used to hate foreign films and subtitles. It was only years later I was stuck somewhere with a Korean film playing on the tv. It was ‘New World’ and since then I’ve been addicted to Korean cinema. Some of the best films in history bar none. New World is my personal favourite.

Thanks for the interesting reviews. I have around 150 Korean films in my collection, but you managed to pick a few I haven't seen - so I'll be tracking them down. On a side note, I've always been annoyed by the Oscars' 'Foreign language' section. To me, cinema is cinema, not matter from what country a film hails. Back on topic, I recommend the recently released Korean sci-fi blockbuster 'Space Sweepers.' Absolute bonkers, but great fun.

I have never watched a movie go so far and beyond our regular critique of society as it's done by Burning and Parasyte. I have never seen a movie with as deep a dive into the mind as Oldboy. And I've just started. I love this video, and there is so much more to see and mention.

What is it about Korean culture to inspire all these films about crime, greed, vengeance, social critique, and class conflict? I’m not the biggest fan of those, and more so of family, cultural norms, and history, which are seemingly more common in Chinese and Japanese films. I don’t want to be a dissenter on purpose but as a newcomer to Korean films, I must say I really didn’t like Oldboy or Parasite. I like Minari though and I’ve been trying to find Tae Guk Gi for some time! With no luck. Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter and Spring and Aimless Bullet sound most promising on this list.
