A beginners guide to crossbows (Tutorial)
An easy beginners how-to video guide explaining the various types of Crossbows available and how to use them.
This video is designed to explain how modern rifle crossbows work, the components of them, the methods for cocking them and the types of bolts that can be used as well as safety information when using the crossbow.
It's also my first video that's over 10 minutes long.

Thanks, out of all my full power crossbows this is the smallest and the one I probably use the least often. My current favourite is the 150lb Jandao Chase Wind that has very nice fibre optic sights and a very nice stock.

Hi from my experience the fins/flights on the bolt are very important, I've had one bolt go about 2 metres from the target due to a damaged flight. The best thing to do is if one flight gets damaged is to cut them all off, with no flights at 20 yards from a powerful crossbow the bolt won't go too far off target, but with a damaged flight it could go a lot further off due to the spin.

There should be a screw adjuster to raise or lower the rear sight, lowering the sight will lower where the bolt hits.

I'm not in America so can't recommend any stores from personal experience, but I know Sportsman's Guide sell quite a few crossbows. As for brand that doesn't really matter as long as you don't get a pistol crossbow but generally the more expensive the crossbow the better it is. The Jaguar is a good beginner crossbow.
@Weaponsandstuff93
@Weaponsandstuff93 10 лет назад
Basically the bolt would drop very quickly when loosed compared to a shorter bolt. A good rule is increase bolt length with the power of the crossbow. Less than 120lb crossbow use 14" bolts or less 150lb crossbow use 14-17" bolts 175lb crossbow or higher use 17-20" bolts

Great video. :) I have been shooting my compound bow for a while now and just recently bought a high powered crossbow. I noticed when you were aiming at the target (in the demonstration) your crossbow almost seems too small for you, I'm not sure if that's what you prefer but when I have shot shoulder fired weapons in the past I have found it beneficial to have a less compact firing position. Regardless I thought your shooting was great and your video informative, keep up the amazing work. :)

very very informative about crossbows and learned about medieval crossbows. 1000 draw weight? wow. thats crazy to think about. have you ever made a homemade one? i have been thinking about making one, and watched a few videos, one from WeaponsCollector and one from Backyard Bowyer. both were greatly informative. but would like to watch as many as i can to get others opinion on making crossbows. and there aren't that many videos on youtube

Barnett crossbows are quite expensive, I wouldn't recommend getting one unless you really want to get into crossbow shooting. As they cost twice the amount as some other crossbows but they are good quality.

Hi. Nice tutorial! My question: I have a 150 lbs regular crossbow (a Chinese one), and sometimes it has severe problems with repeatability in shoots. Usually I shot at about 20 yards from the target. The deviation from two consecutive shoots may be more than half yard! I have two possible theories for this behavior: The place is too windy or the arrows fins are too mashed. What do you think?
@tritile
@tritile 11 лет назад
... Continuing: Do you have any experience with this situations? Should I have to care more of the integrity of arrows fins? Do I really have to avoid windy days? I worry because this is too close for a so huge deviation. Thank you!

I've been meaning to ask this for a while now just didn't get around to it, apologies in advance if this is a silly question (I'm still learning) but I just wondered if you keep your crossbow's strung all the time or if you actually remove the string after use so that the string lasts longer or something? I'd prefer to keep it strung at all times for convenience so I just wondered...
@Weaponsandstuff93
@Weaponsandstuff93 10 лет назад
On modern crossbows leaving them strung is fine. Only wood limb bows really need to be unstrung.

I have that exact same crossbow. I got it as a gift in used and damaged condition. It seems the previous owner tried to fire the crossbow with the safety on and broke the plastic trigger. Then he cut the string to release it as the trigger was no more. I'm an amature bowyer and this was the first time I've set about repairing another manufacturer's product. Having to completely disassemble the trigger mechanism I noticed the safety features are quite nice. I will never have a crossbow without this feature. The string when cocked, forces the safety back. Meaning, even if you forget to set the safety before cocking, the odds are very good that you will have set the safety while cocking. One question, the fiberglass prod is coated in presumably UV protectant black plastic. This makes me wonder, how do you inspect the prod for stress before a session?
@Weaponsandstuff93
@Weaponsandstuff93 10 лет назад
There is no plastic coating on my prod, but I guess if you were willing to do it you could use sand paper on the prod to reveal the fibreglass.
@djdickey
@djdickey 10 лет назад
Actually the only reason I noticed the plastic coat was because it became damaged. It is a shrink wrapping, so once damaged the rest came off as easily as peeling a label of a beer bottle. This allowed me to inspect the actual fiberglass, where I noticed bruising of the fiberglass from being knocked about. Very minor now, and I still use it, but I keep a keen eye for fractures. I suppose if the plastic is undamaged it stands to reason what is underneath is all well.
