@hughshepherd6596 Like becoming a seasoned sailor, boat building sense is hard earned with trial, error over years, but ultimately: by d o I n g. If you wait for expertise before starting anything you'll live your life in theory rather than practice. A good number with an amazing accumulation of boat building sense have done nothing with it but apply in daydreams or stuck on the pier. I've personally tiptoed both lines... militant perfectionism, and fly by the seat of my pants. Somewhere in there is a happy balance, but I'll say- my best lessons have come by way of my F ups. Mark will be on a tropical anchor while many are sitting, dreaming... waiting for the perfect time, the perfect boat that never arrives. Respect the ocean, stay humble, learn learn learn, take only carefully calculated risks, but for F sakes, get going. Life is short.

@@artbymaryf7283 Sailing, boat building sense is hard earned through trial and error, by doing. The docks are full of unapplied boat building sense, theoretical expertise rotting on the vine and boats that live in port. Waiting for the right boat, the right amount of expertise, the right amount of money, the right time... zero risk is where dreams die. Mark will be on a tropical anchor while most stay home, live with regret, criticize those with the stones to dream then take the leap.

I too am of the opinion that your wheel is too small for anything but calm conditions. A quick and simple fix would be to attach a whipstaff to it. Basically a vertical tiller that can quickly be attached to the wheel when required to give another two or so feet of leverage. The existing spokes could act as the mounting points so the staff can be clipped on at any desired angle

Coolest parents on the net! uncontested, I love your mom accent too. Always imagine yourself in the worse sea conditions when planing your projects, like planning down a breaking sea when auto pilot wont do, not on a sunset Martini cruise Advise: Use rings in place of blocks on the steering lines. impossible to jam.,and stronger. The triangular nature of the path of the line is puling sideways, a large loss of energy (work) ,simple physics. You HAVE to change it, the lost work is against you damaging your steering "joints". Not to be critical but there is huge advantage to a large wheel if only comfort and practicality like one hand steering, torque, etc . Long hours on a small wheel is going to be exhausting. PS: get your mom a suit, paint dust in the pores is bad too.

One thing you might just want to check is the force applied to the rudders via the water when turning at various speeds and what force it will put on the wheel. If you look at ocean going yachts they have huge steering wheels as that gives better leverage on the rudders, you might have to do the same and increase the circumference of the wheel as your basically turning the rudders at 1 to 1

Thank you for the reply Mary! Mark reminds me of me. I started watching his channel after being turned off by another couple's channel. The boyfriend's was quite condescending to his spouse and seemingly a bit entitled so I moved in to Marks. I loved their catamaran hull but thought the interior would have looked amazing with more earthly tones. The boat had amazing lines. When Mark was searching for a new hull this boat really intrigued me. Very unique indeed. I thought it would be the last boat he would chose. It seemed so unconventional, however I like unique and different. I also really respect Marks financially conscience thrifty nature. What a great project for an inspiring young man. The involvement and support from Mum and Pop is wonderful. I've watched every episode since purchasing the cat. God bless from Michigan! On a side note, my daughter lived in Gouda Netherlands for 3 years. Hardest three years of my life 😢. Long story... She was only three when they left. I flew to Amsterdam and visited 3 years later. As a non sailor/boat person its so great to see your progress... on the steering; would it make sense to follow with the rope your "steering beam" and then cross the two lines on the existing pullys, so that the angle should get steeper? Not sure if they would rub in the middle of the X, then it would be a point of failure and not worth doing...

From my experience, when you drill and tap stainless steel, the drill bit will last longer if you use tapping oil and pulse when drilling.. Continuous drilling will heat up the drill bit faster and makes it blunt quicker. Oh and it's best to get HSS drill bits. It will be somewhat more expensive, but worth it long term.

I was going to say that with the welder on site, you should re-tackle the rudder supports, but then i remembered the orca attacks and ... probably a good idea that they're wood. They'll likely snap and allow you to do some temp repairs and limp home. THAT said, you should have some sort of alternative steering method in the works on board. Not a full rudder, but at least something that you can quickly "take off the wall" and make at least one rudder out of. I'm thinking that you could get some stainless steel pipe, weld the straps that would be required for a rudder('s plane) and keep it dismantled inside one of the keel holes. Knock on wood you never have that kind of an issue, but you know what they say better to never need it than need it and not have it. Awesome episode, lots done, awesome parents!
