Today I have an idea on how to create your own planted up bowl of moth orchids. In this segment I’m going to show you how easy it is to create a permanent display of many orchids that will last not months but perhaps years. I have this little saying that goes - ‘one on its own is lonely, two can be boring but three or more now that’s visually interesting’.
I love these orchids that were once referred to as the ‘daughters of the mist’. Exquisite, exotic that I think need nothing other than the company of their other sisters to reign supremely.
Your will need to gather:
- White orchids
- The bowl you select needs to be big enough to comfortably contain the orchids and solid enough to hold their tall weight. This will be a tall design to give the illusion that they have been planted and grown to reach a maturing height. I used a white container because the solid white needs to connect through to the orchids and also disperse that visual heaviness of the white.
- Lovely slim sticks to use as stays to hold the orchids - just as the Botanist when they are growing, which give them support and stops them falling over. I painted mine black as a nice contrast.
- 20 gauge florist wire to firmly fix orchid stems to sticks
- Grey foam to fill container cavity to within 2 inches of the top because this will be covered with...
- Orchid bark which will give a natural illusion as if they actually are real and growing.
- A bit of moss if you have it, but this is optional.
Sometimes I will buy a real potted orchid, remove it from its pot and place it in the middle of my design. Now that will foul someone’s eye!
The really great thing about these orchids is that really do not need much water so this position is perfect.
