Tea's progress as an enjoyable beverage starts to make some headway since Shen Nong's time. But it's still one bitter brew during the Bronze Age centuries.
It remains a work in progress but showing tremendous promise.

Thank you for such excellent documentaries! As a Taoist living on a sacred Mountain in Taiwan, I award you the highest commendation of Cultural Appreciation! You are the ONLY Western Scholar on RU-vid that has perfect Mandarin pronunciation. It is appreciated

I'm cracking up because as I been listening, I'm drinking 蒙山毛峰 Méng Shān Máo Fēng (lit. Meng Mountain Downy Peak) from a shop in Chengdu, Sichuan (the Poet Du Fu Cottage Area) that I've kept in a cool dry place. Anyone who go to the Hangzhou area, I implore you to visit the National Tea Museum.

I was just sitting around drinking a cup of tea, and I wondered "so how did we find this stuff, and how did it end up everywhere", and luckily your podcast is teaching me that and more. Thank you 👍

I can't believe I didn't discover this channel until now. Great content! I don't seem to have the same caffeinated response to tea as is described in this podcast. Is my body weird or is it just a different way of processing it? I know certain teas are plucked at different times of ripeness and some are dried or fermented differently.

This channel is one of the best kept secrets on the internet. We're all different physiologically...no matter alcohol, nicotine, caffeine or any chemical substance....it affects people differently. Forget about the caffeine and try to enjoy drinking tea for the flavor and the experience. I'm so glad you stumbled into my world Abby. Please please help me pass the word.

There are many ways to pronounce the word 茶.

In the first episode it´s said that the traders used the local name for tea... and (it confirms what I have read before) that "cha" or "te" result from the ancient delivery routes. Tea introduced from the east it´s "cha" - with maybe Turkey as most eastern region (çay) - and delivered by others it´s "te".

Great episode, Laszlo, as always. On a side note, I wonder if you might someday do an episode on the Erya? Of all the great Chinese classics, the Erya often appears to me the most elusive and mysterious due to it's aparent lack of English-language scholarship and translations. It might stray too far from your usual historical dealings and into the more abstract world of intellectual history, but I, for one, would be enthralled by it.

I'd love to. And the Guangya too. These ancient works are a few notches above my comfort zone. What I'd love to do is find some experts who can speak to these two great works. And the conversation would have to be in English. I'll keep an eye open for the right 专家. I agree, great subject.

The “preventative” property of tea probably came from boiling the water before drinking it.

You ain't missing a thing...Now that I'm no longer burdened with a 60 hour a week job serving the petty needs of my former Ningbo employers, I'm putting all this energy into this. Currently, I have four shows: The CHP, the Tea History Podcast, the Chinese Sayings Podcast, and the China Vintage Hour. And very soon I will be posting a lot of "special episodes" that are mostly interview shows. Get more and pay less! Have you checked out the CHP Store yet? Great stuff! Perfect for all my VIP listeners like you sir.
