I don’t knit but I love that you’re sharing your progress and taking on projects that are pretty challenging for you as a beginner. Such a great way to learn A LOT at once! The coral and blue yarn look so pretty. The teal sweater is looking so cute!

You will get top know what and who you like to watch - then you find some you stay with and who you wont continue with - look at the twins who knit, they are such a talented pair of girls and inspiration.

I was going to suggest magic loop technique to accommodate different garment diameters, which is what I use, but then you mentioned you had already failed at that. There are often many different methods to accomplish what you want with knitting. It’s fun to master new skills. I love your passion for your new hobby! Bookish knitters unite!

I'm not a knitter but I am a lover of textiles. I am also not fond of collars, so I tend to wear a lot of sweaters. My skin is only somewhat sensitive but I prefer cashmere and fine merino wools

Oh, I do too! Cashmere wool blends. Those yarns are so expensive, unfortunately, I’ll knit with them at some point. It’ll be such a treat. Thanks for watching this video that was supposed to post over on my knitting channel!

Oh Renee🤗 No Books!! Knitting - Well, that Right side is not good finish (brown one you wear) Better start with Bags, you can use them for Book-Shopping. Knitting a Vest is at second level... begin with bags or something that comforts suki, a pillow or something...

@@thelefthandedreader6632 I had no idea you had another channel for knitting. Please let me know what it is and I’ll subscribe. I watch knitting channels like Kutivakika and DanishKnits and some others while I knit every afternoon. It’s my quiet time learning what projects, yarns and designers are out there. @@thelefthandedreader6632 my favourite yarns are Bendigo Wool. We have a mill here called Bendigo Wool Mills that aren’t bad but also cheaper than the skeins of other yarns which I leave for really special projects. I don’t mind the brand FiddleSticks and lately been knitting with silk mohair too and 4 ply to make my garments very soft and light. Im on Ravelry as “activatelearn”. I’m self taught since a young girl but RU-vid and being part of local community knitting groups has helped me a lot. I’m knitting the Esther Jacket but it’s slow. Not one to do while watching your favourite TV program. The instructions are easy to follow though thankfully. I like to have a brainless knit and a harder knit going at the same time. The Esther Jacket is my winter project which can challenge me a bit.

Thoughts. a. I highly recommend not doing projects as a beginner that create large expanses of stockinette, such as scarves, plain pullovers, ponchos, etc. Instead, try baby garments and dog coats. No matter what you put on a baby or a pooch it looks fantastic, right? Also small projects knit up faster and require less fiber. Hats are good choices, especially with a minimum of color changes and stockinnette. b. When I have to put in ribbing, I measure out 1" on an index card (or a 6" plastic ruler) and I place stitch holders at ever inch mark uniformily around those arm or neck holes. That way, I don't rely on the row count or the stitch structure to pick up 5 stitches per 1" or whatever your pattern requires. For this purpose only, I make my own stitch holders out of scraps of yarn in a contrasting color. I find they are less in my way than a metal or plastic stitch holder. c. I would avoid Lion Brand for wearable items. I did make an entire basket of woolen house slippers for guests to wear when they visit (no shoe policy) and I used natural 100% wool from Lion Brand. They are an excellent value yarn but one makes really big compromises when cutting cost on fiber. The garment won't drape properly. The stitch count or gauge wont work out right. The dye lots may not match. The fabric may not breathe or bend well enough to be comfortable. Go to a good local knitting store (or yarn.com, known as Webs) and by a 100% all natural fiber other than cotton, silk or angora. Those aren't beginner fibers. Choose any color between black and white and not too close to either end of that spectrum. If you get bored, buy a varigated (although I never like the resulting fabric of a varigated yarn.) Webs has really nice kits they assemble just make sure the fiber is 100% natural. d. Personally, I don't buy mix-and-match sets of needles. I just acquire the needles I am missing for the project I want to knit up. I use Knitter's Pride fixed circulars--dreamz line, exclusively (or as near to exclusively as I can.) I never use straight needles. I love DPs. I often knit in very fine gauges where DPs work efficiently. Its a different knack to work with them. Master the circular's first. e. If you don't follow @AdventureDenali, you should check out her channel. Mostly journaling, hiking, and books. But now, heavily knitting, too. She's on Ravelry too. f. When its time to block, invest in the right tools, pins, blocking mats etc. I have two sets of interlocking mats I can lay out on the patio or floor for big projects. I have pins that come in a bar of 6 pins so that if you are stretching lace, your straight bar will span about 3" I also buy the overpriced woolen soap they sell in knitting stores and I do think it helps to open up the fiber and help it relax for blocking. Never skip blocking even if the piece looks okay to the eye. It will look better after blocking. g. Be patient. Knitting is a meditation. Each step is tedious and slow. Don't rush. There is nothing to be gained by rushing. h. If you set your project aside and you know you are going to be a day or two before you get back to it, jot down a few notes to tell yourself where you left off, what variations you have made, how you have marked the WIP, etc. I never used to do this and many times when I picked it back up a few days later I made terrible mistakes that caused frogging and delays because I didn't know where I was. Now I leave myself breadcrumbs in the form of notes. They aren't perfect but they help. i. The most important beginner tip--don't avoid or put off frogging when its time (tearing out work that you are unhappy with.) If you don't like it you won't wear it. And it will repeatedly defeat you. The fiber can be reused for the same project or a new one. Just wind it neatly. Keep trying. Your vest is quite good for a first project, especially that neckline. Take photographs to chronicle your journey. Ravelry is great for that.

I’m wanting to learn to knit. Do you have any recommendations of what is best for beginners? Supplies, RU-vid Channels, etc.?
@thelefthandedreader6632
@thelefthandedreader6632 3 месяца назад
Yes! I took a lesson from a local yarn shop. Just casually, for an hour. I found in person was the best way for me. Then I went back a week later to check in after I had tried some things the owner had recommended. Then, I found a beginner scarf pattern. A free one from Tin Can Knits.com. And started in with Carol’s oversight just once, I believe. Then when I wanted to know a skill, I just search for that thing on RU-vid. Such as bind off methods or cast ons. You’ll find many instructional videos, tutorials, and just keep watching them until you see one that clicks with you. I hope this helps!

Curious, are you knitting left handed or right? I remember having my grand sit in front of me and us trying to help her knit - she gave up and did well in college with crochet., (one of the roomies was a good crocheter so, that was great!!)
