I became a book collector because I could not get rid of the books I had already read. All the walls of my house are covered with books. Refreshing and warms my heart... these are old friends and we have an unforgettable interaction... you should...
@@thelefthandedreader6632 It sure did! I was able to give some to friends, donate to a book swap and gave the rest to charity. Now to read what I have and try to avoid buying more. That’s the REAL challenge. 😉
Hi Renee, unhauling bookshelves is a never ending story for me. I've unhauled maybe 150 books till now. But I've also bought new(second hand) ones😮. We'll it makes me happy 😅. It's supporting for my own unhauling yourney to be there with you during yours. Thank you....Oh and I've not became friends with Murakami. With regards, Lily
Oh I need to read Watership Down and Portrait of an Artist. I hope to find them both at a second hand book store somewhere....might even borrow them. Let's see. Recently I went through an unhaul too (I'm still going through it). Over 100 books that I've given away and still going.... but I haven't even made a DINT on the bookshelves!!! I kept most of my classics and literature and got rid of tonnes of books of passions and interests past. I made a decision to not borrow books from the library for a little while and just read what I have. Sigh. All the best with your unhauling!
I think personally the best Joyce book to start with is "Dubliners", the short story collection. Then if you like that try "Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man", because that's about his early life as a writer, but of course you won't have any feeling for the author, I would think, without first getting a feel for his work. Anyone who likes magic realism in books, or strange happenings, would adore Murakami, and I remember hoovering up his books, after the first one enchanted me with it's magical, beautiful atmosphere. "Hard Times" is an amazing book, and could be read seamlessly right after "Bleak House". I rather envy you for not having read these ones yet. They blew me away, as they say.
Donna, that may settle it for me with Murakami because I don’t usually like either? I may end up donating this book because, hey, it’ll give me more space and I can get it out of the library - especially since I’m actually working at the library now! Oh, I’m excited now about Hard Times - thank you! I have read one story in Dubliners…the last one I think about the 2 sisters and the dinner. I loved it! Thanks for the advice. I appreciate it.
Clare, I hear you! I’m forcing myself to do this! Perhaps it’s because many of the books I own I picked up so cheaply that I can at least have that in my mind!
Every time I unhaul books I have regrets. Admitting the problem doesn’t actually help. 😂 The Handmaids Tale was a good read. A Portrait of an Artist as a Young Man- painful. Virginia Wolff’s take on Ulysses describes my feelings towards James Joyce.
You're so funny, Renee. I loved watching you go through your treasures. Thanks for taking us along with you. But my heart sank when I thought you were going to toss Handmaid's Tale. It ranks way up there for me.
I hope you do read The Hobbit. Just a completely different type of literature. I tend to keep ahold of my nonfiction books because I tell myself I'm going to use them for reference one day (ha ha), so I'm trying to get more of the fiction from the library. But I tend to have more room because I messily stack things horizontally! Thanks for the upload.
Please give A Portrait of the Artist a go. It is one of those books that is as interesting for how he says things as what he is saying but then I am a complete fan boy and capable of boring anyone for hours about Joyce. I would really love to know what you think though.
I discovered S. Drakulic last year and now it’s my favorite:) and want to read all of her works… the novel you have I believe it’s quite gruesome, so maybe not to start with that…
I need to unhauled some of my books because I have many duplicate copies of books. Now I have given some of the duplicates away. But I am thinking about donating some. I have been given books by my daughter and law. They're books I will never read. Now my sister and law have been taking them to thrift stores she frequents.
Oh yes, Gail. It’s so wonderful when you can actually pass them on to someone. I feel really good about handing them off to my sister for the Senior program book swap.
