Awesome video!! Im digging your M5. My first car was a 1995 E34 525i with an M performance pack. Even though it was broken almost the entire time i owned it, it is still my favorite car id ever had. One day id like to posses an E34 M5 :)). Btw the BMW mechanic looks like Patrick Mahomes 😂😂😂😂
In 5 years of ownership I've spend $10000 on parts and service on my S65. Of that $10K, I spend $4K on winter tires and AMG original wheels that I've never used... (yaaay...) The other high cost parts were the front brake pads and rotors, AMG original, $3K... That's $7K The other $3K was just service, oil change in the ABC unit and gearbox. so I think I've done well so far... let's see what breaks down in the next 5 years or so.... :)
Alex, you have the BEST car channel on youtube. Nothing fake, staged, or phony about you or your projects. Just good content, good information, and real entertainment for real enthusiasts. No trust funds, silly antics, staged events, or fake smiles. Keep it up my friend Respect.
When I first saw his Ford Focus RS head gasket video, I was thinking great another guy whining about his car on the internet. I couldn't have been more wrong I really enjoy all the videos.
I don't care what anyone says. That floor repair is worth at least a 12 pack of Miller Lite and a couple of those White Claw drinks all the ladies love so much.
I took my E36 for an inspection at BMW (Canada) and they quoted me $4700 to fix everything. After I did everything on the list at home with oem parts from FCP euro it cost me a total of $390 shipped. BMW dealers have to be the absolute worst for markup.
We call this a "piss off" estimate in Germany. Had exactly the same experience with my 2003 BMW Z4 here. "12.000,- $" for a front crash that will cost me half of that in my independant garage. F### BMW!
My friend was quoted about 2000Euro for a timing chain and the basic changes of oil and filters on a 2009 VW Passat 2.0tdi. He bought the car for 6500 last year...
mac stone But at BMW you get the nice ladies at the reception that offer you really nice coffee and then there’s the service manager that will take your key, read out some of the things that need to be done and explain to you how much it’s all going to cost you. And at the workshop there’s of cause the inventory manager etc. The actual mechanics have to go through a plethora of courses after which they are certified to exchange parts according to the extensive manuals. See, you don’t get all that at your local indie.
@@Conservator. Haha :-) ! You forgot the glass palace you have to pay for as a customer. At my "indie" the crash was now actually only a third of the BMtroubleyou quote. With all original BMW parts of course, no cheap after market parts.
You should take that list of repairs (minus the cost for each) and bring it to another BMW dealership to compare if it is pretty standard across them or if one place is trying to rape its customers.
@@e30lev BMW's are notorious for depreciation. BMW's in general tend to be overengineered in complexities, and lack the longevity IMO as compared to say a Lexus product. Personally I love the E39 M5, but the cost to maintain one in proper order is outside my current ability to afford such a fun car to drive. Sad sad panda lol
Alex this is probably one of the most important couple of videos you have posted. People are generally unaware just how badly they are being robbed at a main dealer until they see it in black and white. We have a BMW dealer here in Austin that had a stranglehold on parts and service prices. It was not unusual to see them sell $4 washers...$350 oil changes and $79 wiper blades. Keep posting this stuff!! Thanks!!
James Medina for a long time they were the only BMW dealer between Dallas and San Antonio. Not only did they jack prices several hundred % over cost, but they were raging assholes. About everything. I have friends that have horror stories, as do I, about the abuse they suffered trying to buy cars or parts.
No the moral of the story is this guy clickbaited you into thinking the dealership is evil. You fell for the trick. The real moral of the story is this guy likes money and a clickbait title caught your eye because you have a false notion that dealerships are bad. Basically you're just an idiot and aren't aware of that either.
@3 name changes allowed every 90 days. Guaranteed the techs working at the bmw dealer are making near 100k a year or more, and they most likely went to a trade school.
pepe the Mexican staring frog of southern cali you’re so delusional on how much a repair technician makes. BMW repair techs, no matter the level of skill get paid more than 75k a year. Nice try tho. Google next time and you would save yourself from being wrong. Average salary for a BMW tech after bonuses is 59k.
@@MrNicksKicks Dude, ur like some big dumb doofus that doesn't know how to proofread your comment. U contradict yourself. U say they average 59k according to google, because we all know their information is always accurate right? Then u say they make more than 75k. Which are u saying is correct?
This is why i do my own work. I just changed my door rubber pieces that allign the door with poly ones. The shop who repaired my door when i was tboned by an 80 year old, used rusty bolts for the isolator. Its a 2017 and they used rusty bolts because they lost the old ones... Thank god they didnt strip the threads.
Proud owner of a high mileage VF570 supercharged E46 M3 six speed manual and I wouldn't change it for any of the new M cars. Just replaced the rod bearings, entire fluid flush, differential bushings and new Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires on the timeless BBS CH wheels. Thumbs up if you are a E46 M3 owner :)
I purchased all 4 Bosch O2 sensors for my ‘2000 e39 M5 a few years ago, and it was about $250 bucks total. Did the replacement myself and saved a bunch of money. Btw, that oil level sensor is about $100 bucks.
And your going to fix that 17k bill for probly under 2k yourself Alex! 😃 your channel is freakin awesome! Last time I took my 135i in the dealer they said I should schedule my 60k service this year and I was like umm it has 52k miles and I drove it 2500k miles since last year this time. So I told them let's schedule that when it actually has 60k probly 3 years from now 🤣 dang Stealerships!
As a 540 owner, the guides would be the first thing I would do, also consider changing the cooling system, clutch fan, radiator, res and hoses if they need it. When the fan clutch fails, it sends blades into the hood and does all sorts of damage to hoses ect.
The e39 is such an underrated and understated car, I strongly believe, at pretty much any mileage, the M5 will definitely hold a reasonable primary market value and will go up depending on the condition.
Independent Merc Mechanics are a huge difference. I do about 90% of the repairs on my CLK430, but AC repair and some over the top ( if I dont have the equipment), I take it to an independent Merc garage here.
The best ever thing is to show how dealerships rip people off! the best example is by showing how fancy parking lots or facility is! And! And like the way you doin yourself for 1000 bucks.
Alex my family lives one town over from you! My Dad shares Chicago BMW service prices to me for his E39 and they’re significantly higher than the dealer in Bridgeport Connecticut. Crook county markups. Bridgeport still charges $1200 for an E90 valve cover gasket and $150 to change a fog light bulb lol!
Thank you so much for the insite. I use a dealer who I have used for 30 years and they for the most part are reasonable. The markup on the parts is the major cost tho. Fortunately my Mercs are lightly used and rarely have major problems. That being said now you know why they call them "stealerships"
Hey Alex, Just wanted to give a little feedback. I started watching your Channel last year, when you put out the amazing Focus RS factory defect video. And I liked every single video since then. I even told my girl about you, because you were one of the realest Creators on this platform. Never ever had I the impression you were only putting out videos because of the ad revenue nor money in general. You were only making 100% helpful Videos. And you were the only creator I know who did this. Seeing you making an AD for a mobile game wich doesnt even have a remote connection to your channel format made me feel sad. Because from now on I can't buy anything that you recommend without double checking it first. I won't stop watching your Videos, but I wish you hadn't planted that seed. Keep it up. Looking forward to new Mercedes Content :)
I am a shade tree mechanic and own and E320 CDI Hybrid with 245K miles. In the end a car has 4 wheels and engine and brakes. I take care of her and to me my car is worth 1Millon 🤔 dollars. Alex, I have learned slot from you and can't wait to see your diesel with great power back on the road.
Yep, took my 2003 M5 to them in perfect condition. It had 164,000 miles and it looked like a 30K car. The secondary air pump needed cleaning to pass smog, but I cleared the light before taking it. $2,000 was their offer. I wasn’t going to sell either way, I just needed help to decide on whether the $7,500 air pump fix was worth it. Sold it and my daily and bought and 2020 M2 Comp.
The system is broken. The dealership model, and complexity of not just cars, but many products is so out of whack that entire industries are killing themselves. The world needs to get back finding ways to engineer reliability, simplicity, an ease of repair and stop the ripoff train.
I am surprised, as well. I believe it has something to do with the fact that Alex acts like an adult, without all of the fictional drama that gets you 1M subscribers. Unfortunately, we are living in a three-second-attention-span-society, who value nonsense and predictability over informative and genuine knowledge. Thank You Alex for all the hard work!!!
From what I remember from working there long time ago, anything over 10 yrs or 100k went to back lot for auction. Any one at auction looking at that vehicle and mileage knows they will have problem selling it on their lots. Only those in the know and who work on cars themselves would salivate over that and not see it as a money pit. Rare buyer in deed.
This guy could do all that work for $1000 parts money in about a day. The only tricky install would be the airbag controller. In that case, programming it for $277 might possibly be a GOOD deal.
The nice thing about bmw's vs mercedes when it comes to programming is that bmw is easier to get a subscription online and it I think its like 100 dollars a day to program. only caveat is you need a J2534 box and a good power supply to avoid current drops
Damm Alex I saw your Car I Barrington and it sure doesn’t look or sound like it has over 400k miles on it! Great video and I can’t wait to see the price difference between you fixing your car and the dealership estimate!🐟
I dont know were they get there prices from because here in Ireland(Europe) BMW charges around 80/100 euro per hr. They generally have a set price per job on the car, it is negotiable if a lot of work has to be done. I recently had a load of work done including the removal of the dashboard to replace the heater box and both matrix (HAVAC). The list was endless. I think the bill was 3k 4k. I even got new control arms, springs, breaklines all round etc etc........ and still reasonable. That garage is rip off and by no means a representation of all dealerships, well at least in Ireland. People here and in the UK got so pissed off with high dealerships prices that the dealerships learned and prices dropped. Theres a better aftercare service with a dealerships and you have come-back too. I ve so much back luck with backstreet garages and mechanics with 0 zero come-back I just dont bother anymore. Stick with the dealer (well at least in Ireland anyway)
We here in Germany have some Start-ups which „repair“ those Airbag Controll unit, because often only the software is broken, and than it costs arround 200€, and if the Controll Unit is defect, it costs anotger 100-200€ for the repair, so definitly less!!!!
Well, I would probably buy all the parts separately + all of the hardware to do it at home and still save a few bucks. Last week I have replaced the brake lights in a cheap car for 3$ including the trip to the store to buy the lightbulbs + 30 minutes from my spare time. Bonus, I enjoy it.
These excessive charges are uniform across the industry. As a consequence BMW and Mercedes depreciation is catastrophic because the cost of service and repair is so exorbitant. In Australia it's now even worse because you cannot buy workshop manuals any more for newer cars. It's unbelievably wasteful of resources
$200/hr labor for a bmw? Holy shite. My Impreza WRX was $89/hr lol. You’re right about the car if it showed up to auction. I worked at Manheim and that car would’ve went right into a specialty lane and would’ve fetched CarMax a good deal more than $1500 that’s for sure. They’re quite smart at auctions and know which older cars, especially niche/specialty cars, will kill at the auction
Have the same car with 220k miles. I've replaced all fluids/oils , coil, plug change (huuggee difference in horse power probably due to 220k coils and plugs😂) and a lot of what they mentioned in estimate. I've probably put 1000 in the car but did everything myself... Have to remember those dealerships are usually overstaffed so the service dept makes up for all the bs but I'd never let them touch my baby.
I have a new to me 2000 M5 and the BMW dealerships here in Sacramento won't even work on them anymore! Said they won't work on cars that old. WTF....it's an M5....you'd think they'd be all over it. Super disappointing though I do most of my own work.
Are you going tp make another Super Car Saturday in South Barrington this year? I was out of town and it's right down Higgins from me. Iron Gate in Naperville is just like that too.
To change the light bulbs bmw uses 3 mechanics at the same time to do the change. 2 of the mechanics lift and turn the third mechanic who is holding on to the bulb.
The issue calling them a “stealership” is the high percentage of people who willingly pay those high prices regularly simply because they want their life easier.
The ONLY time I would go to a dealership for anything is if A) The car is under warranty or B) I'm getting body work done due to an accident and my insurance covers it.
yeah. Genuine BMW parts in that 'BMW Group" baggy, are insanely expensive. you can legit rack up a 4 figure bill just on some replacement fasteners. junk yards and Ebay are your friend.
Remember economics 101 - Maximize the product Q(P) * P , Q=quantity fuction of price, P=price. As long as there are cash heavy time lacking people wanting a quick easy care free fix for their car, and have the money to do it, the price is increased by stealerships, to the point where P * Q = revenue is maximized.
BMW hit my aunt with a 12k repair on her e90. Caused her to sell it to me for $500. I fixed a few things and sold it for $3,700. This is how I get vehicles at a great deal!

10W60 is actually (or was) a pricey oil. That's what my 1200cc Moto Guzzi uses and it's got nothing to do with other oils I've bought.
I actually had to LOL with your reference to Hoovie. As entertaining as I find his automotive adventures, I do find myself concerned about his masochistic tendencies when it comes to his purchases...🤣
Unreal bro...that service estimate. So Illinois will pass a car, that is less than 25yrs old, without cats? You have to wait til the car is 25yrs old here in TX before it gets to skip emission test.
Really don't understand why you would go without catalytic converters (I know you bought it like this), better for the environment to have them. Yeah it takes some power, but if you put some decent sport cats in that would be negligible.
Bro Ive got no problem with the game adv or anything but you really should say something like "thank you to *incert name* for sponsoring this video" to fully disclaim it. It comes off as more professional and trustworthy because you just outright say it. Your a cool guy im sure kids and adults will still try the game off your recommendation. Ps very sorry if you did say it and I'm just deaf. Was using power tools at work today and got a little lazy with the earplugs
What an absolute rip off ! $512 for the Oil Level Sensor ? As you said, they're $30. I did mine a couple of weeks ago. Its a few mins work. They're completely taking the piss with every single item on that list. You really should name and shame them because it DOES matter. Otherwise we are just enabling them and helping them get away with it. Let people know who to avoid - unless you're afraid to because you might need to go back there, although god knows why. That's an insane invoice. Legalised robbery if you had let them work on it. Looking forward to seeing how much the repairs end up costing you when you fix it yourself.
Objectively I think this is what people do when they don't wanna do the job, just quote an insanely high amount. I'm not sure if someone who owned a business and saw someone who had removed catalytic converters would want their business name associated with the repair.
20 Years back, my BMW-dealer told me, that you have to pay twice for parts and services, as soon as you gonna drive a "M-type" model. Looks like, that today it is still the same....
My response is not to debate the ethics or lack thereof for removing Catalytic Converters, it is to simply ask WHY do so many RU-vidrs talk about removing their Catalytic Converters (not saying that you removed yours), but it blows my mind on some of these channels where the RU-vidrs blatantly admit and document the removal of the Catalytic Converters. I think that the BMW technicians were just covering themselves by notating the missing Catalytic Converters. But it still blows my mind that the removal of Catalytic Converters is openly discussed on RU-vid. Each one that is pulled represents a $10,000 fine. True who is going to know what is missing on the average consumer's car, unless in an area that checks yearly, but you people will just tell the masses, "Oh yeah, by the way, we are going to pull ours and let me show you how we did it???????????????????
Hot Rodders have been removing Cats for as long as the Fed has been forcing manufactures to install them. RU-vidrs talk about it for different reasons. Some... I'm a Rebel and refuse to let the man tell me what I can and can't do! Others.... I want my car to go Fast and Sound Cool! and more.. RU-vidrs know it will trigger some (mostly environmentalists) creating drama/content. = PAY DAY!
The real question is: how TF do you find a good small mechanic shop? I can diagnose better than any of the other small shops I've visited in like a 50 mile radius of my house. That's exactly why I take my car to the dealer when I can't figure out a problem with my car, and they always get it right. Maybe California just sucks with small shops, and all the good mechanics apply for dealerships?
Hy buddy i saw u r missing the rear arch covers for the wheels in case u don’t know...otherwise very nice purchase...i saw all ur videos on this car and some other about the merc...nice channel...btw i own an e39 not m5 tho...good luck with your m5
Does the secondary air system still work on that car? I thought all E39 M5's has that ducting in the engine filled with carbon and it basically couldn't be fixed. Mine wouldn't CA smog check anymore and I had to pay a company to modify the software to code that test out.
