As a machinist, I am very impressed at the thought and detail that went into making this wonderfully engineered contraption.

Being a russian myself i can assure you that nothing is wrong with the price. It stayed the same. I checked it multiple times already. Please pay attention to that there are 2 different "kits". The K-01 is very simple one and e.g. there are no parts integrated as shown in 3:00 - 4:30 here. Those are in K-02 kit! Further down you can select the parts that you need for yourself so you can specify your buy! I just checked the price for what i would prefer: K-02 basic kit + 1x 2 small holders + 2x diamond stones kit (Venew diamond stones are the BEAST! i tried them multiple times!) + leather on aluminum bar + Dialux abrasive paste kit + 3x screwdriver-keys (for holders). Pay attention that I removed the ground plate (see no reason in it and i have enough materials to make my own stable ground unit) and 1x big holder (those 2 small ones will do most of the job well in my opinion!). That got me to around 315$. can't buy it though because i have no money atm ^^. Feel free to ask if you have problems with translation!

Actually, since ceramic is a lot harder material than steel, the rough part on the bottom of a ceramic coffee cup does sharpen knives well (as in removing steel). You can see this by the black lines of fine steel particles it leaves behind on the coffee cup.
@DogsBAwesome
@DogsBAwesome 7 лет назад
I was a chef for 25 years so I'm pretty good at sharpening knives and yes I have a $25 ceramic sharpener that gives the best results I've ever had. That said most chefs can't sharpen a knife properly. This setup though would be good for tiny knives where you can't get a good sharpening rhythm going
@pauljs75
@pauljs75 7 лет назад
You can also buy ceramic stones or rods specifically for knife sharpening. It's something like a 10,000 grit eqivalent for fine and 20,000+ for extra fine. On average ceramics also wear better than natural, and you occasionally clean them with something like BonAmi and a 3M scouring pad if they load up after a while. Only downside? Don't ever drop it.

You know what's sad about this video? That it reminds us that America no longer makes such great tools and is nothing more than a nation of consumption, rather than the nation of producers that we once were.
@doloinc
@doloinc 7 лет назад
This has nothing to do with the cost of the product. I'm highlighting the fact that America no longer makes quality products like we used to. Take craftsman tools, for instance. What was once a very respectable tool line is now chinese junk.
@Matthew-mq6fz
@Matthew-mq6fz 7 лет назад
We still produce plenty of things; it's just that what we make has changed. Our textile manufacturing and lower-end consumer goods (hand tools, for example) have mostly moved overseas, but higher-end technology manufacturing has taken its place. Of course, these newer industries often employ less people than once worked in the textile or steel mills. But to suggest the US has fallen behind Russia in manufacturing (in anything but small arms) because of this nifty---and probably unavailable to most American consumers--knife sharpener, is silly.
@Matthew-mq6fz
@Matthew-mq6fz 7 лет назад
For an American to produce a set of quality wrenches and recieve a fair living wage, those wrenches would have to be priced much higher than they are when they're made by some Chinese kid who can survive off pennies a day.
@doloinc
@doloinc 7 лет назад
30 years ago, you could obtain quality American made hand tools for not much more than 'quality' tools made in China today. Now, even the 'high quality' and expensive tools manufactured in America fail in comparison to mid range, inexpensive tools manufactured 30 years ago. Again, prime example is Craftsman. Many of the craftsman tools my father obtained in the 70s and 80s are still far superior in quality and build than expensive 'American quality' Craftsman tools he bought just last year.
@Matthew-mq6fz
@Matthew-mq6fz 7 лет назад
+doloinc I'm totally aware of that. But again, our economy has changed since those days. And in order to still be able to actually afford hand tools, to keep the price reasonable and affordable, it has to be made by someone in a country who has a lower standard of living than ours. Sad, yes, but that's what we as consumers have demanded since the Industrial Revolution, really. But still, I see nothing made in Russian on the shelves where I shop.

No it did not. I will prove it to you. Go to this link. It is the Way Back internet time machine. It allows you to see cached versions of websites. web.archive.org/web/*/tsprof.com For TSprof we have several, but I will go with May 21st since it was MONTHS before you video came out. web.archive.org/web/20160521003651/tsprof.com/ If you scroll down you will see there are kits and these are the prices you quoted. Notice how none of them look like the one you got? Go up a little bit above those green check marks. Click the white rectangle that says "Profile K02". Now scroll down and look at the middle kit. Does it look a bit more familiar? The price of the kit that you received when the video went live was around $346. You made a simple mistake when comparing and pricing the different units. You can even compare the prices now to the prices back then. PLEASE make sure to scroll farther down to the parts selector so you can see how much each individual part varied as some of the kits changed and prices reflect that.

@greenmachine1987
@greenmachine1987 6 лет назад
Supply and demand... If the quality is really as good as he claims, the Mfg cost can't be cheap, and production is probably done on a small "craft" level, not an industrial mass production scale. Very few products are still machined in mass scale, it would be cheaper to cast or stamp a product once it gets to a certain scale. Machining takes much longer and is much more expensive and can not be scaled up as quickly... Ask the Germans about MG34's vs Mg42's... So if these machines are milled and machined, and he gets a huge boost in demand, he cant just snap his fingers and make 1000 more overnight, so naturally the price will go up.... Before this video, he probably didn't have that much market exposure, probably none over seas...

***** i have the lansky set with the diamond stones and ceramic and arkansas and the leather strop "stone". if i had to describe the lansky system in one word, it would be finicky. if you put different pressure on the stone, the rod will bend ever so sligbtly which changes the angle enough to make it look wierd and also affect sharpness. if you use more than one rod, it wont work because each rod seems to be at least slightly bent different. if you dont get the rod tightened into the stone at the exact same depth each time, it will ruin the edge. because the rod guide hole is oval, if the rod moves to the other side of the oval it is changing the angle of contact. unless the blade is straight with no curve, the angle is changing as you move along the blade.. actually a straight blade is also changing angles, you would need a semicicrcle blade. however, if you correct for all of these things and work slowly, you can get very good results, altho i have never been able to get mirror finish without a separate step, i can get it shiny so i can read letters clearly in the reflection, but in most light you can see plenty of scratch marks. for me, setting a profile and working to hair popping sharp takes a few hours, which is super slow but i do it while watching tv and its relaxing. still, i would love a better system, or the skill to hand sharpen like a pro

$417 USD ($549 AUD) as of 7/7/17 (This date is perfect for those who Day/Month/Year VS Month/Day/Year) Very expensive for a sharpener, however the engineering in such an item should mean it should last many generations and thousands of restored blades with little maintenance. A dull and/or chipped blade, no matter the original cost of it should never be thrown out if it still has the potential to be resharpened, remain useful and used for many more years. This eventually could save you money, reduce waste and also (hopefully) teaches us that the throw out culture we have become is certainly not the way to go. Hopefully this sharpener also works on other cutting tools and not just knives. This is why I don't mind saving longer to spending more on a quality product that will get plenty of use throughout the years and genuinely last.

Keep in mind that this product ins't designed to home use, it is clearly too expensive and unnecesary productive for a regular person who need to sharpen three or four knifes per year. This machinery is made for commercial use and for those who for some reason have to sharpening a lot of tools on a regular basis. If you sharpen 10 or 20 knifes per day its more than affordable for you.

Steir Qwe- I agree with you concerning this product. I also disagree with this product because sharpening personal knives with a stone or a steel is a skill. Butchers,hunters,chefs and more have used skill to sharpen. This looks great though!

Dear Wranglestar. This is the video that got me thinking "how have i not subscribed to this channel yet?" Thank you for your videos! I like to keep my knives super sharp (maybe because wounds tend to heal faster when made with a sharp knife, and i might have made a few) i have been searching for a good jig for knife sharpening and you have brought me together with the best, it seems. So again thank you!

Man, that is indeed the best I've ever seen! I'm a knife guy too. Russian engineering is often incredibly over built and this is no exception. I'm sure it's close to if not more than a grand and probably worth every dime. I'd never afford it, so I'm kind of stuck free handing and just got a Worksharp that's really working well for my needs. The key to everything is to maintain your edges with a strop and hone when needed. But stropping is the best you can do. Loaded leather with diamond abrasive is great. I wish I could get this sharpener though! Damn

I got some extras including the double clamp for long knives, the stand, and diamond abrasive stones. Shipping is $85. Total came to $387. It looks to me that you could cut cost by leaving out the extras and cut about $150 off the total. Still beats a Wicked Edge by a mile. I did not get the rotating bearing shown in W's video.

Being a machinist, the first thing I thought as you were pulling the parts out was "that looks like a machinist tool". I can tell you that this is the type of approach I would have taken in developing something similar. And yes, this is a high quality device, great engineering and an absolute work of art. Now, you've likely given him a big problem but it's a good problem to have: that being, keeping parts in stock. My boss recently made some little seat spacer for Toyota Tacomas. He was selling them alright on a machinist forum but he finally had a RU-vidr review them and now he can barely keep up with demand.

What a fine piece of engineering....great video. I don't know if you knew it...but as far as Cutco cutlery goes..they come with a lifetime warranty. They will replace them with a new one if anything goes wrong ever and you can send them back to Cutco and they will sharpen them for free. They are wonderful knifes and are made of surgical steel. The handles are made of ebonite ...what bowling balls are made of, and the rivets are nickle silver. If you have any of their serrated edged slicer knives..they have what they call a double D edge. That edge is the same used on a ophthalmologists scalpel. You can shave the hair right off your arm with them if sharp. This wonderful sharpener from Russia may not sharpen serrated edged knifes. If you wife has any of those send them back to Cutco and I believe they will sharpen them for free. Thanks for the great video.

I don't know what the status of Cutco is now, but my Mother had it in the 60's. I personally sold tons of it in the 70's. It may have changed hands since then but it was Alcoa owned back then. I still have Cutco that is over 50 years old and still great. I didn't mean to take away from this Russian sharpener. It looks fantastic and an going to purchase one. I know ir would do fantastic on my high carbon steel hinting and fishing knifes. It is really a work of art.

Yes you are right. I am not familiar with the brand Vector...as they must have bought the Cutco division from Alcoa some years back. Years ago when I was selling Cutco the whole set was about 150.00 If my memory serves me right. That was back in the late 60's. I know times have changed a lot. Can't imagine what they are now.

I'm very impressed with this set up and I too was amazed at the mid $200 price tag mentioned in the video. Seems like there is a lot of parts that go into this. It is now a shocking $417 plus shipping from Russia. The attention to detail that Wranglestar mentions really makes you take a moment to consider that $417 is not cheap, but neither is all the work that goes into something like this. I wish Paul and Profile TechStudio great success. Hopefully this will inspire other companies to innovate. Maybe he can grow his company and reduce the manufacturing costs so more of us can have such an excellent sharpening system.

web.archive.org/web/20160307221958/tsprof.com/ Prices in March. $346 for the one Cody was sent. $268 for the K-01. So unless he lowered the prices just before the video and then raised them back up you were looking at the wrong unit.

Thanks for this. I am coming to it late. I spent more than half that price trying to get a functional sharpening solution. When you consider the cost of belts and other junk necessary to make that system work at all, this one is cheap. Other belt system I bought never really worked and only provided average results. It also required a good but of practice to even get that. This is clearly a superior design and I am impressed with the craftsmanship. Thanks again for the video. time = money. so the less time you spend sharpening the more money you make by using the sharpened knife, scissors ect. Who says you can't sharpen other peoples knifes and so on and charge them a little. Also would be a great tool for blade smiths. Remember not everyone that watches this channel all do the same thing. I remember when Cody did a review on a Bahco hatchet and didn't like it much. I can say that Cody will give his honest thoughts on things he is gifted or things he is sent to try out. Make that three stones and I'll agree - it's all anyone needs. Coarse to remove damage, Medium to get an angle, then Fine to polish it. You can get fanatical about it and run up to 10,000 grit or more, but for an EDC that fine a finish won't last. If I was knocking out high volumes of blades daily, fine ... to maintain a typical home's 10-20 blades - that sort of outlay is excessive indulgence! To all of you people hating on "clickbate", "sell out" and claiming that Cody always says what he gets is the best. 1. Clickbate; who cares? He is showing us these products hands on and he is making a living for his family by doing this. His videos are detailed and thorough. I enjoy every one of them. 2. Sell out? What is your definition of a "sell out"? I see nothing on his channel that locks him into a certain brand or a specific tool. A sell out is someone that promotes something regardless of the actual quality for money. Cody is willing to recognize when something is better then what he's used in the past. 3. When you get something new isn't it the GREATEST ever until something new comes along or until you find something you didn't know about that is better? If I was in his shoes and I found something great I would want to share it with y'all and tell you how great it is. Every new thing becomes the greatest ever.
