Follow up comment: I used the Edge Pro to sharpen every knife in my house, my camper, and now I'm looking for some neighbors knives to sharpen. THANKS so much for reviewing this tool. I finally have an accurate and uniform angle on my knives, which is the foundation to a sharp blade.

I was a free-hand sharpener for 30 years, and am now an Edgepro user. It's no BS. There is still a free-hand element to this system too, given the fact that the off hand is used as the "clamp." All the feel of free-hand sharpening is still there. It's a joy to use this system :)

@@meandthemrs7403 I still make my living with an Edgepro, but a Pro model for the last 5,000 knives or so, after over 5,000 on my original Apex. I’ve tried others, but none of them make me want to switch.

Great information, and very humbling for those like me who've been sharpening incorrectly for many years. I really appreciate the little tidbit shared about twenty one degrees being a good angle of the majority of knives.

This is an OUTSTANDING sharpener. I have owned mine for almost 3 years (bought direct). I use it for everything from hunting and tac knives (Buck, Benchmade) to my obnoxiously expensive Henckles set. I would strongly suggest, and I did this myself, find an older knife (or knives, sharpening a 3" paring is not the same as your 10" chef) to practice on and get to know how it cuts and and how much each stone will take off (or polish conversely). I personally like using a thinner painters tape with higher tack (3M 2020EL...from memory, the number may be slightly off). I don't do a lot of commenting on youtube, but I watched a few of the tree felling videos and then saw one about "selling out"....sigh.... so I had to see what sharpener you were "selling out" to. Low and behold, it is IMO, the best compact, portable, cost appropriate sharpener on the market, again, my opinion, but I have had mine for about three years and tell everyone I know about it. I am not yet a subscriber and anyone reading this can take it any way you want, but the reality is that anything with a blade needs to be maintained and this is an excellent way to do it. If you think that 5$ carbide drag sharpener you see at grocery store is a good deal only one of three things is the case, you buy a lot cheap knives, you are actively destroying your expensive knives, or you don't really know what sharp is. BTW, Cody signed (QC I would imagine) mine 10 of 2014 in what looks like silver paint pen. If you are looking for the best, do some research, much of it can be done on youtube, I'm not the only one that feels this way, and you will keep coming back to this product. Wranglestar, if this is you "selling out", well, this would be the way to do it. ok /diatribe

I own an Edge Pro and have spent hours sharpening all kinds of knives for friends and my personal collection. It is the ultimate system to use for sharpening. A bit of a learning curve at first but once you have the process down. You will get outstanding edges.

* Again YOUR persona with your staff was excellent. * YOUR HONESTY was totally believable especially with my 52 years in Law Enforcement experience. * I learned more from this 25 minute video on factual sharpening than I have in three weeks of study. * Whether or not you know it: The nice young lady CONFIRMED everything that was going on. * The INTERVIEWER was excellent in bring out so many questions and answers. * Dang it! YOU were very HONEST again in answering them. * To back up my other systems namely Spyderco & Horse Hide Straps with Knives Plus loaded strap - I HAVE just GOT to HAVE YOUR excellent designed system. Frankly this would be the only system any KNIFE collector would need. PERIOD!

I do just about every step that is taught here except the permanent marker trick but I do it all by hand, by feel, and by sight. Not near as exact but as good as it gets for a common man on a retired meager budget! I noticed your edc in this video has a sheeps foot blade. My sons pooled together and bought me a model 555 Benchmade with a 154CM sheeps foot blade for my birthday. Wow, what a difference a good knife with a very hard blade (58-61rockwell) can make! It came hair-shaving sharp right out of the box!! It is without a doubt the best and most expensive knife I have ever owned! First thing I did was to put a tether on it!

This is an amazing jig. It works really well. I have been using it for a few years now and the benefit over freehand sharpening is consistency. Over and over, I have shown people what sharp really looks like. Ben knows more about sharpening than I ever will, but I disagree with him about diamonds. I have a few knives that are so crazy tough that the stones dish faster than the edge forms. I have to reflatten stones over and over just to get close. I switched to diamond films and emulsions and had is sharp in no time. I see no need to bother with diamonds for 95% of the knives people bring me.

I also have the EPA and as many others have stated, it is truly a fantastic system. That being said, some of the aftermarket additions offered by Mark Richmond of chefknivestogo.com really add to the performance of the machine. Little things like the table magnet, drill stop collar, and the quick change stone system work great and cost only a few dollars. The single biggest improvement, though is the higher end aftermarket stones. Chosera and Shapton both offer them, though I am only familiar with the Sharpton stones. They cut MUCH faster than the standard edge pro stones. In fact the 500 grit Shapton cuts much faster than the 220 e.p. stone. They are more of a true "splash and go" stone as they are much more dense and absorb significantly less water than the originals. Another big advantage is they are offered in much higher grit finishes. (I believe 16,000, but I'm not positive. 8k is plenty high enough for me.) Way better than the polishing tapes which are a hassle. If you prefer to use diamonds, Atoma also has their stones that fit the machine. The 120 Atoma will save you so much time and a little money in the long run if you plan on doing a lot of re-leveling. Obviously, the diamond doesn't wear away like the waterstones do so while it is expensive ($75), your lower grit waterstone will last way way longer since they aren't being used for the initial beveling. Sorry, kinda long winded but hope that helps anyone considering getting the system.

The fact that your vid is with the actual guy is awesome. I even learned not to be so OCD about trying to find a perfect number, just trust the sharpie! another thing I realized.....I've been using WAY to much water.

Thanks for this very informative video and I'm considering this product. Towards the end you asked about sharpening axes/hatchets and he kind of went fast about how he would do it with wedges etc. Any chance you could do a second axe video with him so we could learn how he would do it with his system? I love the adjust-ability of that sharpener. Looks like a great product! Thanks for the video. For my use though and a substantial cost savings the DMT Aligner works well for what I need. It can sharpen serrated blades too. I know it's diamond but I don't sharpen 100 knives a day. Come to think of it, I bet most people don't. If I had more money I'd probably check that one out though.

Shoshannah1993, edge pro makes an adapter for scissors that works great, but it only works on the professional model, not the apex. You can't go wrong with the EdgePro professional, I love it
@TheApostleP
@TheApostleP 11 лет назад
Both systems take a fair amount of skill at the tip, to keep from rolling off the edge, but you're right -- the Edgepro does require the off hand to keep steady pressure on the handle to ensure good contact with the table. I have demo'd a Wicked Edge and bought the Edgepro. Two reasons: Wicked Edge has a lot of angle variation on long blades due to the fixed position, and with the WE, you're locked into diamond media (bad, IMO). Also, the EPA gives more flexibility to an experienced hand.

I have the same DMT diamond sharpener I've had for 14 years. It is a medium. I bought because I bought a pocketknife that was so hard my Arkansas and India stones took forever to sharpen. For a medium edge it is still working good and has not pulled out any diamonds. It is a full sharpener, no holes and it has smoothed out some over the years. My diamond sharpener works just fine and I use a fine stone to finish a blade for real sharp, but my diamond is great for kitchen knives. I make knives and know a thing or two about how to sharpen one. I have an Arkansas black stone that will put a razor's edge on my wood cutting chisels. A razor edge is for wood carving, leather cutting or shaving, not for anything in the kitchen or hunting camp.
