rumor has it smith & wesson had to pay schofield a fee for his design and to kind of get around when the got the army contract they figured the came up with a new caliber and be the sole supplier only one problem that did them in they thought the whole army was to be given the new gun 250000 men army only needed 3000 guns when the army realized the ammo problem they got rid of the guns

My sister and I have the nickel plated/white pearl grip Schofield .45 Colt on our list of Grail Guns. They'll probably discontinue them before we can afford a couple but that's life. Absolutely beautiful guns. It's too bad the politics of business at the time kept the .45 Colt from being offered in the Schofield and Winchester rifles. It sure would have made things far simpler back then.

45 Long Colt ? That means that there was a "45 Short Colt", huh? I really only know of a 45 Colt.

This is just my opinion, but I have always felt, of handguns, and especially revolvers, that the lines, handling, and overall aesthetic of the Schofield, Model 3, and specifically the Russian contract .44's, are perhaps the most beautiful mechanical devices ever crafted. How's that for a run on sentence? Honestly, the Russian .44, with that trigger spur, is just a functional work of art. The only reason I don't own one yet is the odd calibers they come in. Just not super practical unless you are buying into another caliber for that gun alone. But as far as production firearms go, the Schofield models are the just an elegant solution to what was a tactical problem in the late 1800's. Interesting how far we have come, yet also interesting what we lost in the process.
