It's not just a glorified toy commercial, it's a toy commercial written and designed to accommodate a CHEAP toy company. They killed Optimus Prime in the movies purely to sell more of his toys they had in the warehouse they put a blue coat of paint as Ultra Magnus toys. And they did this with nearly every other transformer as well, taking older transformer toys they didn't sell many of, and repainting them or putting a new face sticker on the window to call it a new transformer instead of designing a new toy from scratch for new transformer characters.

This might be completely my imagination, but I recall reading an interview with Kazuki Takahashi where he said that his original concept for Yu-Gi-Oh! was "a battle manga using games" and the reason he started focusing on the card game he introduced was because it was easier than having to think up new games over and over again. Personally, the use of "Pokemon clone" still has its negative connotations to this day. Yo-Kai Watch was hit by the same negativity via vocal Pokemon fans that happened back in the Digimon rivalry era and it was pretty ugly both times. Calling it a "Pokemon inspired game" has a lot less cruel meaning behind it, as a clone is taken as just a knock-off or rip-off. And yes, there ARE games out there that completely ripped off Pokemon, but Digimon--until Digimon World 3--didn't do that. Pokemon was and still is a game that has you collecting as many monsters as you please, but with only six possible to take on your team. Digimon, originally, only had you with ONE monster, to raise and battle with, via Tamagotchi themes. That one, single monster would become something bigger, before reverting down to something new(or the same mon), whether it was naturally by age or a sudden death. Monster Rancher has more in-common with Digimon then Pokemon. Yo-Kai Watch has more in-common with Shin Megami Tensei and Dragon Quest Joker then Pokemon, however, I can definitely see more similarities between Yo-Kai Watch with Pokemon. You should also not forget Pokemon has taken similar themes from its rival series. Mega evolution was totally a Digimon inspired aspect, Pokemon Amie was Tamagotchi, and the recent Sun/Moon series borrowed HEAVILY from Yo-Kai Watch with its more rounded style and quirky jokes--and the gems that unleash special powers is totally Soultimates from Yo-Kai Watch. I will admit I never gave a lot of the marketable anime to be that close to Pokemon... Digimon and Pokemon felt more like fantasy shows where you couldn't obtain these creatures in the same way as, say Transformers or YuGiOh, or even Beyblade, 'cause they had tangible toys that work the way they do in the anime--just smaller in size and no fantasy aspects involved. A Transformer toy can transform, a beyblade can spin and battle with other tops, and all card game anime were pretty obvious. Still, marketing was marketing, so I understand trying to tell a good story to sell a product was definitely helped with Pokemon's huge Pokemania craze back in the day. Too bad some of them were such good stories, I missed out on the fact they had a game tie-in. (I tended to fall out of the loop with new games as a kid, hurf)
@cloudkitsune17
@cloudkitsune17 5 лет назад
@Manannan anam The only thing they really have in common would be falling under the "collecting" game genre. For Digimon, you really just collect data to get new digimon or try to mix around with the stats to get new evolutionary trees unlocked. Medabots, was more about parts of the bots then anything. And YuGiOh, getting more cards to use for your deck hand. Still, I don't see that much else that ties them together. (Yo-Kai Watch and Digimon 1-4 have more in common, with their setting in the "real world" with kids befriending creatures that can communicate. Plus alteration in color schemes for the same monster making it a completely new creature. But, one is digital and the other are ghosts/demons.)

Following your logic innovation and variation are irrelevant to the concept of cloning, so almost everything is a clone and strips the meaning.

Okay I'm gonna try and stop some misinformation in this comment section about how Digimon was purely made of a Pokemon knock off. First of all, Digimon was devised after the release of the Tamagotchi when Bandai noticed that it seemed to appeal to girls but not so much to boys so they made Digimon as a sort of spin off, so they most likely started work on it not longa after, at the very least we know it was pretty far into development (some comments in the past from people worked on it suggest it might have had a bit of development hell or delays). We know this because Pokemons release and boom in popularity gets indirectly mentioned inside of the digimon artbook "Digimon 20th Anniversary, Digital Monster Art Book Ver. 1~5 & 20th" specifically in a part with older designs which have similarities in design styles to Pokemon in the text its mentioned that all of them were scrapped and character design was started pretty much from scratch because "a different franchise with similarities" came into popularity and they wanted to avoid a possible lawsuit. So yeah tldr Digimon cant be a pokemon rip off because dates dont align

@KaleidWinter Not to mention that digimon doesn't even focus heavily on capturing monster. In the games it's all about raising them. You have to manage what they eat, how you train them in a gym and when I say gym I mean an actual gym for digimon, etc.Theoritcally speaking you can have a strong digimon who has yet to battle anything. In the animes and the games ,the digimons are not being held captive by their tamer. Instead the digimon choose their tamer.
@DataumCats
@DataumCats 5 лет назад
The original concept isn't Everything that came afterwards, which makes up 99.99% of digimon material, marketing, books, movies, tv shows, collectables, CCG, toys and whatever else to have ever have existed? You can't possibly claim they weren't cribbing every possible note off Pokemon and keep a straight face. Bandai have said as much. hell, the way digimon and other franchises cribb off of pokemon's is a pretty standard marketing case study these days. bandai took a look at pokemon's success and went "holy crap, these people are making all the money off collectable monsters. Wait, we have are our collectable monsters, why can't we be making all the money off collectable monsters" and proceeded to try and duplicate pokemon level success by using the formula pokemon stumbled face first into, and after the original digimon toys came out, every single thing they did followed that formula to a tee. Whether or not someone feel they did something different or more interesting with that formula, isn't relevant. A working formula gets cribbed off all the time. Wagon Train shows were popular and star trek is just that but *in spppppaaaace*. Star wars is what happens if Flash Gordon reads " The Hero with a Thousand Faces" and gets handed space samurai sword. The entirely of the 80s saturday morning cartoons is bascily "that smurf show, but ponies/snorks/gummibears/etc" The entirety of the disney channel and nickelodeon is basically "Lizzie McGuire but..." Digimon did a lot of things different with the same formula and building on similar themes. Which is part of the reason why people still remember digimon as opposed to some of the rip offs. But it wasn't a successful franchise because it was "tamigotchis for boys". Tamagotchis had just about crattered out of existence by 2000. If that's all they did with it digimon would have cratered out with it. Digimon got popular because the franchise was so very much exploiting the Pokemon formula for everything it was worth. And given that what it was worth turned out to be "6 billion dollars and counting", they'd have been stupid not to.
@GaomonAndLucario
@GaomonAndLucario 5 лет назад
@@DataumCats "Digimon got popular because the franchise was so very much exploiting the Pokemon formula for everything it was worth." Mind explaining what you mean there bud..? Because I'm not seeing the full picture with this sentence, as while yes, Digimon had to get some Pokemon stuff in it to survive, but it didn't exploit it fully for its own gain.
@thewizardninja
@thewizardninja 5 лет назад
@0n3m4n4rmy Digimon DOESN'T follow Pokemon's formula though. Where are you seeing the parallels? If you're purely talking about how their toys were marketed then I can see your point, but the original Tamagotchi based toys were raising sims rather than RPGs and the World games were dungeon crawlers more similar to SMT than Pokemon. Their anime couldn't be more different either - one's set in a fantasy world where the main hero goes on a coming-of-age journey with the purpose of improving themselves and meets friends and companions along the way, the other is an isekai where a group of people are lost in a world they don't understand and are trying to find a way back home and, apart from their partners that they meet almost immediately, almost everyone they meet on the way is an enemy. So I really don't know what "formula" you're talking about.

Aside from pokémon, my personal favorites were stuff like Digimon, Monster Rancher, Cardcaptors, Yu-Gi-Oh, Flint the Time Detective. Medabots, Mon Kolie Knights, & Fighting Foodons (I even occasionally watched Shinzo whenever it was on Fox Family at the time). There was something about this genre that always appealed to me. Not a bad video, but the only similarities between pokemon and franchises like Digimon, medabots, yugioh, and beyblade are how they are marketed. When you really look into each show as opposed to how they are marketed, it is ultimately unfair to make a comparison like this. If you compared each based solely on either their games, the content of their anime, or other products individually then that would be a much better and more accurate comparison. A comparison like you are doing in this video in a way devalues these other franchises by writing them off as "pokemon clones" instead of as "media franchises that are from the same genre and share some similarities with pokemon". That would be a more accurate description. However, that's just my opinion.

Tbh I think some clones can push Pokémon to improve itself. Just with Yokai watch’s release and success followed a complete change in Pokémon’s formula (ex; Sun and Moon) maybe the game had been in development for a while but it really felt different from the usual formula most games were taking at the time. Is something really a "clone" if it's just a game in the same genre? It's the same question with Rougelikes and Metroidvanias - these games are similar to their namesakes because they fall into the same genre, but they're not rip offs. They're only compared so heavily because those games did it first. Just like we've changed the name from "Doom clones" to "First Person Shooters", I think it's time we stop calling them "Pokémon clones" and start calling them something like "Monster Collectors" or "Monster Collector RPGs".

@@danieldishon688 The reason Yu-Gi-Oh! became about the card game it introduced as a stand-in for MTG was due to reader response; it had nothing to do with pokemon. The manga covered a variety of one-off games, most of which resembled something real. So, when the manga made something like Magic the Gathering (getting popular in japan at the time, IIRC) but where the monsters popped out of the cards and you could see them kill one another, the reader response was so strong that he and his editors jointly decided to bring it back for the climax of the manga's first arc, which again proved so successful that they decided to make the series revolve around it entirely. It was essentially an unlicensed MTG manga, which, of course, far predates Pokemon, and the natural result of a super-popular manga about tabletop games coming out when MTG was on the rise. Although some of the comments do seem to be following that horrible stigma of "DON'T YOU SHAME A SERIES I LOVE" or "Ya, screw you Digimon fanboys", I'd say a lot of the comments are more pointing out the fact he is just giving blatantly false information to claim Pokemon is a better franchise/series than all the others. Many of the franchises he points to as being Pokemon clones really took nothing from Pokemon at all and are more just following the trends that were simply happening at the time. People seem to forget how new the video game media is and even in the late '90s, video games were still finding new ways to take real world concepts that have been around for decades, if not longer, and put them into video game form. And in relation to Digimon, it really didn't take anything from Pokemon. The anime was entirely different, the games were not really mimicing them, and as for things like marketing toys and cards to kids, Pokemon did not do that first at all. He points out Gundam, but you also had the Power Rangers, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, G.I.Joe, Super-Human Samurai Syber Squad (which just got the anime reference adaptation of SSSS Gridman), and others in the '80s, early '90s, and possibly earlier.

The threats faced in Tamers were more personal allowing for more depth than the standard Good & Evil, with a more eldritch yet manmade final enemy. The main antagonists of Tamers weren't really full out villains being very human in personality except for D'Reaper which was merely a weapon that went bezerk. I see Season 1 as darker because of villains like Myotismon most notably who were pure evil incarnate & Seasons 4 & Savers there was a lot more loss throughout them. Most battles were just defeat after defeat & lets not forget that Kurata a human villain put a bomb around the neck of a young girl in need of surgery.

The thing is, even the franchises that were marketed in Pokemon's shadow weren't necessarily CREATED with Pokemon in mind. So I'm only seven and a half minutes in so far, so this may be irrelevant by the end, but there is one thing that you have critically neglected was addressing 2 important aspects. The first is a matter of definition. In order to have meaningful discourse or understanding of a topic, each side must know exactly (or at least as close as possible) what the other side means when they talk about different topics. In this video, you have so far failed to establish an important point: what do you define as a "clone"? There are a number of questions you could use to answer that. Does it just have to have the same mechanics? If so which mechanics? Any? All? If "any", does that include grid based movement? Is it a matter of aesthetics? What mechanics or aspects specifically need to be copied to be a clone? Does it have to be popular to be cloned from? Is it a matter of inspirations? If so, how much? Is it possible to tell how much something was inspired by something else? All of these are important questions to answer for the audience to be on the same page when talking about these topics so we have a full understanding of where you are coming from and a fair chance to propose counter arguments, something which is very important in critical discourse. The second is the question of genre. At what point does a clone / knock off become a genre in and of itself? When did "DOOM clones" become shooters? When did "Diablo clones" become ARPG's? When did "Street Fighter clones" become what we now call "fighting games"? These may be addressed later, but I think it is important to address them earlier rather then later so we can have this fore-knowledge when hearing your points. But that's just my opinion. If you have a reason as to why you think these are unnecessary or excessive, I would love to hear it.

So by that logic that means Fate is also a Pokemon clone, but instead of magical pets or toys they have historical figures as waifus. Now realistically speaking, we are only taking the Pokemon perspective as our only point on view when we should also take the way these franchises are handled, Digimon was never mean to compete with Pokemon, and you can clearly tell that by the way how both franchises are handled in such different ways, both franchises were born vry closely and went in very different approaches in both Videogames and Anime series. in fact Digimon didn't had collectable RPGs games until much later, Yugioh also doesn't feel like it should be called a clone. it's actually a bit insulting considering it had it's own narrative and story based around different dark games already, the card game just became big enough later on thanks to bandai and later konami push on it's popularity and made the anime a huge commercial while still sticking to the original story. Also Pokemon should still be considered a SMT clone since the main focus is the demon collectable feature that still is the biggest feature on most of the games in the franchise, not denying the shallow attempt at aiming younger demographics with Demikids, but still it was the original creator of the monster collectable genre even if not in the same mainstream way as Pokemon.

Wow. You actually did your research about how Shin Megami Tensei and Dragon Quest predate Pokemon in the monster collecting RPG. Not sure why the protagonist actually fighting makes such a big difference. You still have to command the monsters themselves. It's certainly quite the stretch to claim that removing a battling mechanic/feature is some kind of innovation. I'd argue that that's just watering down the formula. Another thing to keep in mind is that Dragon Quest Monsters had breeding BEFORE Pokemon and handled it way better. It's also not just the anime, but even Pokemon Sun and Moon's games borrowed almost all its new ideas and concepts from the Yo-Kai Watch games but made them worse. Digimon really ISN'T a Pokemon clone because it borrows WAY more ideas and concepts from Shin Megami Tensei than from Pokemon. Honestly, instead of just calling them _"Pokemon Clones"_ , you should instead call them members of the _"Monster Collecting Genre"_ . Calling them clones of Pokemon makes it come off as if Pokemon is the only monster collector that's allowed to be original when the fact SMT and DQ predates it prevents that from being the case.

You aren’t looking at the correct kind of innovation. The difference of fighting along side or not is impactful on the story side. It also shifts the monster collecting focus from a partial aspect of a game to the core feature. There are also a few more aspects linked to “Pokémon clone” besides being a monster collector (though not all boxes need to be checked). Many are story related, having young protagonists typically involved in some sort of competition unique to their world (as the entire premise, not an arc or two). I don’t mean to presume, but you came across as someone who was already a bit sore on the subject of “Pokémon clones” and was more focused on countering than listening. If that is the case, there’s nothing wrong with holding those views, but you’re swinging more at the general concept than the video.
@DrCoeloCephalo
@DrCoeloCephalo 5 лет назад
@@skycastrum5803 Not really because you certainly can't beat the original Shin Megami Tensei without putting a ton of focus into collecting and training monsters. Using your lone human avatar without a monster party is suicide in those games with how hard they are. Problem is that none of these games I mentioned use competition based stories like Pokemon, so you're completely out of luck if you're trying to call it a Pokemon clone based on that. Shin Megami Tensei generally takes place during the apocalypse with angels and demons trying to conquer the world, NOT friendly competitive tournaments like in Pokemon but all-out life and death WAR. Yo-Kai Watch is just a slice of life comedy with ghost stories. Digimon's main plot is usually over the symbiotic dimensional relationship between the human world and the Digital World and regaining the balance between the 2. The only one you could argue it for is Dragon Quest Monsters but even then, it's more like the monster betting tournament battles they've had since DQ3 which dates back to 1988, 8 years before Pokemon came out.
@skycastrum5803
@skycastrum5803 5 лет назад
DrCoeloCephalo: A few problems. First, you’re missing the “though not all boxes need to be checked.” Actually, the video isn’t even just looking at “clones.” It’s examining the impact that Pokémon has had. Second, no one is arguing that a few of those are clones (or at least they shouldn’t be). I wasn’t claiming that all the shows you were mentioning were clones. I was arguing in defense of this video’s use of the term. To your first paragraph, I suppose that is an argument for why monster collecting is a central focus? If so, you’re only looking at the mechanics side and ignoring story. Also, SMT has a decent amount of gameplay outside of combat. It’s not a kid-friendly adventure. It’s a survival game with heavy emphasis on choices. (Also, it’s weird. Your post first is saying how SMT is actually similar, then talking about how it’s different. My position is logically consistent because I claim it’s not similar and not a clone, thus just different. Feels like you’re just trying to be contradictory.)

For the record, Digimon Adventure (the series) went into production before the Mamoru Hosoda short movie did, the series wasn't made because "it got greenlit", in fact it went the other way around entirely. Hiroyuki Kakudou (the series director of Adventure, 02 and a whole buttload of other crap) stated in the afterwords of the Digimon Adventure novel series (Volume 2) that Bandai and Toei had slowly began a project to create a 50-or-so episode TV series about Digimon in the early summer of 1998. When said plans/the concept of the series was getting finalized in the fall, the project had evolved into a multimedia project where ANOTHER team at Toei was given the task to create a movie to promote the series while in V-Jump there'd be a Digimon comic, the key thing being that all three projects would feature the same protagonist. Although his name came from Toei, Yagami Taichi made his first appearance in November of 1998 when Digimon Adventure V-Tamer 01 began its publication, a (fantastic!) comic that has nothing to do with the TV series, it just happens to feature Taichi and is where the character originally comes from (as his design was created by Yabuno Ten'ya, the artist of V-Tamer). So yeah. The series would've been made regardless of the Hosoda movie. THE MORE YOU KNOW 🌈🌟

Yeah, but the similarities are way stronger between pokemon and the games it copies than between pokemon and yugioh. For example, he says SMT is more like a generic RPG because the protagonist can fight and level, but in actuality, your protagonist is a liability, as if he dies it's game over whereas any number of your demons can die, and the player is generally frailer than their demons. A way to think about it would be if in pokemon the opponent could attack and kill red. Since that shit ain't pg, they stripped it, and in the process made a far easier and more accessible game. The way the guy skews his argument it's easy to overlook this while thinking pokemon and yugioh are hand-in-hand, but that's how youtubers'll get ya.

I mean you even showed a game that had you doing roughly the same thing as pokemon that came out before it and still said pokemon was the first. In less I am missing something it sounds like you are saying "Pokemon was the first to make pokemon." And as a side note just because something came out after and is roughly the same does not make it a clone. I have to go back to what you was saying about how "These games did this first but because they are not pokemon they don't count." well these games are not pokemon so they are not clones. It even turned Honda/Tristan from anreformed bully with a hard edge into a foppish dweeb who runs the school's clean-up club. Plus, I'm reasonably certain that the Duelist Kingdom arc was already well on its way by the time the Toei season went into production, which is why it included the field based power-ups in the Dueling and had Yugi face more Duelists sent by Kaiba. Hell, the theatrical short film had the Duel Disk prototypes from the end of that arc.

No, nor do most people. That was entirely my point. Everything is inspired by something that came before it in some form or another. When people are inspired by something, they aren't inspired by all the things it was inspired by. It's not transitive, they are inspired by only the thing in front of them. Pokemon was infinitely popular, and therefor inspired a great many people, another property doesn't just "get the credit" for what Pokemon is responsible for just because Pokemon had to come from somewhere. No idea comes from a vacuum. It's like saying you've never done anything in your life. I'll note up front that I'm talking from the biased perspective of having not had anything to do with Pokemon, but... no. No, it's not. I mean, marketing-wise, there's probably some influence. The Exe series began in 2001, so it was definitely being released under the Pokemon craze -- but I'd say it was more influenced by the JRPG genre as a whole. This was the first time that Capcom had approached doing anything like a JRPG, both in terms of combat mechanics and in terms of story writing, for the Rockman franchise. So they probably took inspiration from the more popular series of the day, and noticed the common trend of 'young protag-kun and his traveling (sometimes animal) buddies go saving the day' trend, and decided to implement it. Somewhere along the way, that eventually translated as using Rockman himself as the default combat character, but eschewing his usual main protagonist status in place of an original character. But Exe didn't end up as 'Pokemon but Rockman', it ended up as 'Rockman but RPG'. The overall trends in character and world writing as seen in series like Pokemon are just... really common in JRPGs of that era. There's an interview from the game writing staff somewhere that I'm too lazy to track down right now that stated that they took inspiration from popular TCGs of the time, which would've probably included Pokemon and similar series that had card tie-ins. But because having little monsters or other creatures being summoned up to do the fighting isn't really in the spirit of the franchise, I suppose, they instead used that system as a weaponry system, which is how we ended up the final Battle Chip system used in all versions of the series. But while the 'collectable' part of the script is there, the 'monster' part isn't. You only get to use one combatant in all of the Exe games, and there's very little customization outside of changing out the chip folder. Yes, this is a little similar to changing one's team roster in something like Pokemon, but in those games, changing the roster can completely change your playstyle. In Exe, changing the chips can only get you so far -- all combat is still based on high speed and agility, since you're stuck playing with a veritable glass cannon. As for storywise, it's a lot harder to say. Geoff points out fairly well the wide variety of storylines used in collectable monster stories, so you can't really say if a series is copying another or not just by looking at its plot only. Yes, the wide variety of weaponry that some of the characters use is reminiscent of collectable monster rosters, and the overarching themes of comradery and friendship found are also common in those series... as they are in basically every modern shounen. It's less that Exe might have been copying Pokemon here, and more that Pokemon was copying older storylines, as those storylines had done themselves. No idea's fully original, after all. The problem is just that there's no fully consistent definition of what makes a series a 'Pokemon clone', but I'm fairly certain that no matter what that definition would say, Exe doesn't fall under it. Oh, and also Exe wasn't a platformer, it was a turn-based pvp system. :)

Both 2 and 3 got rid of those systems for a turn based combat system so uhhh, its pretty obvious where their influence went afterwords 1 was clearly more influenced by its origin as a Tomagachi clone, and was more the exception than the rule, given even the modern Digimon games mostly still do turn based, collect digimon [or digievolutions], combat.

@@BaneDane_JB There influence went to a more traditional JRPG. You know... like Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest? Both of which predate Pokemon. So I guess Pokemon is a Final Fantasy clone? And just because the combat system changed to be more "normal" doesn't mean it was a Pokemon clone or took anything from Pokemon at all (although it probably took something because that is how all media works).

I'm glad I was able to watch your Pokemon video before it was taken down. This was a fascinating video. I'm still a big fan of Digimon and I find the history behind Yugioh's development fascinating. My favorite catch'em all series to this day is still Clamp's Cardcaptor Sakura (albeit I'm not the biggest fan of the Clear Card series at this moment).

Judging before I watch, but because I saw the thumbnail, I just gotta say it... Yu-Gi-Oh! is by no means and in no way a "Pokémon clone", lmao.

You can't call YGO a pokeclone since pokemon is about making friends while YGO is about losing them. Why yes I play Drytron and Kashtira, how can you tell?
