I just found this in my archives! Filmed this in 2008 when we were salvaging some small parts off of this twin tandem compound reversing engine at Weirton Steel. It is now all gone but we did save a few small pieces that are now part of our museum collection at Youngstown Steel Heritage.

Thank you for that look at Weirton Steel's blooming mill engine. My father and I were talking about the blooming mill this morning. Dad ran cranes in the blooming mill. He has told me all about it. I am hoping the next time I get back home we can make a trip up to your museum.

I wonder if he operated the crane in the engine room. I saved the wooden stool from the cab of that crane and it is now in the cab of our crane.

So glad you were able to save a few pieces for posterity. What a massive engine!

Rick, thank you for posting this again. To All, this engine is still visible on Google Map’s satellite view today. Take a look before Google updates the map to present day…..this map fooled me last year as I had a trip to Weirton for another reason…..the engine is truly gone. Rick, thank you for preserving the Weirton engine virtually and the real work you are doing in Youngstown and Pittsburgh! As future generations look at these massive machines that built industrial America,….. one person led the effort and had the vision to save a few pieces from going to scrap…. Hats off to you sir! Wow! Very interesting engine... although not a candidate for rescue... the high pressure additions made saving this unwieldy at best... pick your battles. Crazy that they just put a tensioned cage around it and cranked up the pressure!
