A brief view of the power of Samuel Smiths Old Brewey - Tadcaster

BBC's Inside Out documentary - broadcasted 12th October, 2009 - in the Yorks and Links area. Gives just a very brief insight into the power of Sam Smiths brewery - and in particular how one of the two Director brothers - Humphrey W Smith - exercises his 'Lord of the Manor' type power, with apparently no regard for the hurt it may cause to many staff, customers, and literally, anyone who gets in his way. More information can be gleaned from our website: samsmiths.info which is a moderated open forum for managers, staff and customers - and was set up in the absence of an official website - and to overcome communication problems, since the brewery has banned all their pubs from owning/ running websites - which were normally done to help support their clientèle, and the brewery's business.
Ultimately, the website and its members, support the brewery and it's produce, and Public Houses - but are very concerned about the shift in governing policy exercised by Humphrey Smith, which has seemed to cause a steady increase in problems for staff and customers alike! Mr Smith (who avoids publicity, and commentary at all times) has made his viewpoint very clear in a circular (which we have seen an original) with regards to his customers - the is not bothered or concerned about what they may like or dislike. It is alleged that he has suggested; that as long as the beer is good, and the price is cheap, he will always have customers - dispite however long it takes to get served, or what the pub and surroundings is like, or has to offer. A very big departure from the usual market concerns for customers from his competition.

I worked at one of their pubs and they were terrible to work for, they didn't care about the staff and ignored us when they came in. When I tried to make a complaint about our manager who regularly threatened to fire us as some reverse psychology motivator among other things I found it wasn't possible to contact them to do so.

Took my wife for dinner, after the meal decided to pop into Sam Smith pub. Had a glass of wine and pint for me. The glass had lipstick on it, when I asked to have the glass changed, I was asked to leave!!! Shameful set of pubs.

I live in Tadcaster. I was talking to the landlord of one Tadcaster pub who told me that Humphrey Smith wouldn't even let his pubs get double glazing installed. Something to do with preserving the old fashioned charm apparently. I question Humphrey's sanity if he believes that would damage the building's appeal. And if you've ever felt the cold of a North Yorkshire winter you'd agree double glazing is a necessity. If not to keep the cold out then to keep the noise of Humphrey's lorries out.

Tried to complain about a Peterborough pub, rang them 17 times over a 3 week period, always just went through to a voicemail, left messages but they didn't ever call me back. So I asked the secretary to ask, but the complaints woman still never called me back. I wrote to them. Nothing, no response. These people just don't care.

I’ve just been running a pub in tadcaster. Decided I’d had enough of being treated like a piece of dirt on the bottom of Humphrey’s green welly!!! No regrets at all about upping and leaving all within a day going to the brewery on Monday to tell him to his face that I aren’t running his pub anymore. Me and my partner worked 11-11 7 days a week without any rest. Most disgusting company I’ve ever worked for

I was enjoying a Nut Brown Ale over here in New England, USA where Samuel Smith's is widely available at sophisticated beer retailers. Decided to look on RU-vid for more information on the history and brand. Wasn't expecting to find this sad story of a tyrannical overlord. Not sure I'll purchase this ale again with so many other breweries trying to make a positive impact in their communities. It's too bad really, the ale is quite excellent.

Tadcaster's bridge fell down in the recent floods, cutting the town in two, so people have to drive 10 miles to get from one half to the other or walk over a railway viaduct which is very inaccessible. Plans to put a temporary footbridge on Sir Humphrey's land to reconnect the town were refused by him as he said it was "a waste of taxpayers' money". He is probably one of the vilest men on the planet, with a long history of interfering legally in other peoples' lives to protect his own interests. Altruism is an unknown concept to him. He runs Tadcaster like a feudal kingdom from about 1100; if he had his way, there'd be a gibbet in the market place bearing the hanged body of a pub manager who'd served a too-full pint. But don't boycott his pubs - that only hurts his loyal, long suffering employees. He's so rich, he wouldn't be hurt if the entire brewery went bust.

It looks like SS have nobbled a website that has been critical of the SS policies and treatment of people and staff. 'samsmiths.info' ; H. smith has been trying legally and illegally for some time past.Would anyone who knows why the forums on said website have apparently been taken down or hacked, please post here. There were plenty of regular users who must be as fed up as I am over this.

Hiya me and many others are working away at trying to stop it from happening as it won't serve the local community and it will only serve to further worsen the current housing crisis which I am one who has got left homeless with my little boy at the hands of Camden Council. The whole community has to come together now I think the message is out there since we had the public meeting at swiss cottage community centre but we need everyones input and full engagement we need people to commit themselves to fighting to stop this abhorrent building being built ON OUR PATCH.Essential Living take a hike we don't want your new age tower block which will turn the market into a wind tunnel and steal the sunlight from the surrounding residents so they would only get 3 months of sunlight out of 12,further more the proposal is very dangerous as the buildings density would be double that of the legal limit,Hello Essential Living are you all a bunch of brain dead zombies are you trying to kill everyone in the underground you want to build a building double the legal density on hollow ground? What's wrong with you and by the way the secret is out yes we know essential living are tied to Solgarium and the Kier Group companies and there is a trade off agreement with TFL for regeneration of the underground stations as always I wont go away and shut up people please we urge you to come to meetings held most fridays at the community cafe 10:30 we need you now we have to do a march and demo to show the town hall we mean business and that we will go to war on this we have to do this before essential living have their planning committee meeting at the end of july.People if you care about your area then please help protect it this building if it were to happen would rob us of the only green space left in the immediate area and for anyone who doesn't know swiss cottage crossing is the most polluted crossing in the borough of camden the green space is the only thing stopping the pollution from being an immediate killer, but however the pollution is killing our community slowly and quietly it's been going on for a while but camden like to try to keep it quiet.

Informing video. But i'm almost sad I saw it. I love many of samuel smith's ales/beers. They are the only english brewery I really like. I'm trying their apple cider right now for the first time and it's pretty good. I understand mr. smith wanting to keep the town from being over developed and keeping it's old world feel. But obviously he has caused some strife in the process. But that is business as they say.

After weighing my options on whether I can morally continue to drink Sammy Smith, I have come to this conclusion. Although the Owner is a bit of a prick, his Stout is so damn good that I cannot in good conscious boycot the beer. I have found the perfect stout for my pallet and that is worth it's weight in gold! I raise a pint to you good sir for making my favorite beer on the planet. It is not so easy to find it here in California. The owner of my local liquor store had to special order a case for me. I waited a month for delivery. If you have never tried this beer you have not lived my friend. Cheers!

Seems like a hit job by the city council that is pissed off they can't control the brewery that owns the land in question. In 2016 there was a flood and the council wanted to build a 500 thousand pound temporary bridge on Tadcaster property at taxpayer expense. Samuel Smith's rejected the building of the bridge on their land because it would be a waste of taxpayer money and other crossing were available. Samuel Smiths thought the taxpayers should not be charged because of city council's failure to maintain the bridge in question.

Yes indeed, the BBC and no doubt "councils" of globalism's best knobs and foreigners are the problem. I would like to hear supporters of Sammy Smith's arguments against these allegations. "Democracy" is a joke because it always appeals to the lowest common denominator. But if they're true, the Smith family needs to start doing what's best for the city and be a real leader instead of a parasite, and history tells that is a fine line that can easily be crossed.
