I'm really surprised that they went with Chewbacca as their first buildable character over something like (as you pointed out) Darth Vader. This seems more like a statue you'd put in a "wave two" once people are familiar with the concept and open to variations.
Looks much better than I initially thought it would. Love your point about it not being another flimsy X-Wing, helmet, or gray dust collector. I've steered away from the Star Wars line because it is just the same stuff over and over and over (my collection doesn't need more gray), so this is a nice change of pace!
Me too, never buy SW Legos anymore, too many big boring gray ships who take too much space and not that fun to build. I suggest more fun builds like Lighthouse, Frame Cabin, Disney Castle, some Harry potter sets, Tallneck, Rivndell etc. so much more fun to build and actually looks great!
The review hasn’t changed my initial thoughts. I like the idea, the body looks great, but there is just something off about the head. Nevertheless, would be interested to see other characters in this style of build like Darth Vader, Troopers, Mandalorians. Or some bipedal droids like 3PO or K2SO.
I loved Yoda and Grogu, and Chewbacca looks surprisingly better in real life than on the announcement renders. Seriously hope they continue this theme with buildable characters in this even more ambitious scope, there's a lot of awesome possibility.
This turned out better than I thought it would, and I'm glad I was wrong. The eyes are the biggest flaw to me and I'm glad there isn't much posability so it has a statue-like feeling to it. And I'm glad it's not just a giant gray hodgepodge, it adds a little more POP in color compared to what Legos been doing for Star Wars. It's ok imo. Great work as always TC!
Seriously appreciate your input on where this theme could go. I thought a UCS 3PO in line with the current R2 would be brilliant. I now see that will be much more achievable at this scale and look foreword to it coming to fruition. I hope LEGO will do it right.
This is the second time I watch one of your reviews where I originally don’t like the set and then have to have it by the end of the video! Thank you for your awesome reviews!
It looks so good! A lot better than every iteration of yoda I've seen, imho, because chewbaccas requires so much gangly texture that's definitely not smooth, whereas relatively hairless creatures (even with wrinkles) always look a bit odd with seams and hard angles. I think even the deepset eyes work really well - you often can't see chewie's eyes very well in the movies because they've been obscured, and the shadow cast by the bricks seem to work really well from most angles
Thanks for the mostly positive review. Really glad I'm not the only one who see's this as a major building accomplishment despite the obvious repetition and static nature of the build. Personally I favor these buildable characters over the helmets/enormous UCS models as they have a unique presence, and character being based on a living creature example the Porg or Yoda. Definitely going to buy at some point and hoping it does well. Would be amazing to see Darth Vader of even C3P0 in this scale.
I was surprised to see this announced, but I'm more pleasantly surprised to see how good it looks! I think you're right in that this brings new opportunities for LEGO to explore in the Star Wars theme, but I would not be surprised if they play with the scale just a little bit in order to meet certain design requirements for the model itself.
I'm really impressed by it! It's a surprisingly good build for a surprising set, and likely the best that LEGO could do with the task at hand. It's clear that some of the most talented Lego product designers were working on this one. That said, the design still feels... Underwhelming, to me? I dunno. It may just be that I don't feel like I want a Chewbacca on my shelf at all! Not for me, but for those who it is for, I'm glad the quality is there.
All of your videos are really great! They help me decide what to buy and what not to, which is really helpful, and they are really well thought-out and thoroughly detailed. Can you do the insect collection next?
I think this is the first test to see if this scale of model would sell well, an extension of the helmet series at a higher price point, as mentioned from here we could see it really open up…shame about the high price range though making it quite exclusive
I love Chewie but do not like buildable figures in general. That said, this looks amazing, a lot better than if I think back to the C3PO that came out like 20 years ago or so. I could use a couple of those cloth slings for my MOCs ...
I like this set a lot more than I did before. I’ve seen only negative reviews before this, so I love your opinions. This set would also be a good parts pack for Mocs if it goes on sale.
I wasn’t a fan of the set when it first released. But now that we have had an R2-D2 and now a C3P0 in the same sort of scale released, it kind of makes sense. I am sorely tempted to get Chewie and the new C3P0 as well as some LEGO rope and/or cargo netting and see if I can’t recreate the broken down and bagged up C3P0 look where Chewie is carrying him around on his back in ESB! 😂
I just finished building this and while I did enjoy doing it, I hate how wobbly it is. I know it’ll just sit on a shelf but still would have been nice for something so big and tall to be more stable.
Lego seems to have gotten better at brick-built characters in general in recent memory, especially in the Creator line. I never used to like these kinds of builds, but I find this one extremely appealing (in contrast to that Yoda statue, for example, which I find deeply uncanny). My only real problem is that I'm not actually a huge fan of Chewbacca!
I don't do any of the buildable figures as I prefer ships, vehicles and other minifig scale things. But this looks better than I initially thought it would.
@@h2owl205 They might have made it _better,_ but they didn't quite fix it considering I've just had a reddish brown piece break on me last week. It was probably a few years old, not a super recent one. I rarely break Legos, and most have been reddish brown (some literally by assembling them as per the instructions... that was horrifying, but it was also in a decade old set).
Everything about the build is done very well. But those eyes are nightmare fuel. I feel like solid black eyes would have been a better choice, but at least it's a very easy fix
I doubt it's gonna sell well, but I like it. It's a decent build, and looks okay. The only thing I find weird is how thin his legs are, as I'm aware it's part of the original design, just looks a bit weird seeing it in a LEGO form
Seeing the eyes so sunken in makes it look like a Springtrap suit, rather than natural eyeballs. Frankly, FNAF animatronics would be a pretty good buildable theme, especially if they added some of the puppet features used in the Mighty Bowser set.
"Giant grey dust magnets" - yep, this is why I stopped collecting Star Wars sets, even though they are why I got back into Lego as an adult. *So* much grey. I'm currently collecting planes, the Creator 3-in-1 theme has so many nice colourful ones... But then there's the Concorde, and we're back to massive monochrome monoliths again. It looks so good though. Chewbacca looks better than I expected, but I was never a big enough fan of him to want to buy a set of him, also the blocky nature of Lego is only half the problem - a shiny Chewie looks a bit odd to me, but it'd be too much to expect Lego to invent matte pieces just for one set.
The price isn't bad... but honestly, I'm not really liking the look of it, once the light hits the final build. Detail washes out too much and the texture is just too repetitive and muddled. Not to mention making it so you A-cant pose it, B-can't remove the brow. I would like to see where the line goes, but I think they bit off too much with this one before they really had it dialed in. For that much detail they should have stuck with a bust like they did with Black Panther.
What a piece! Chewie is one of my favorite characters...along with Han, of course. I'm conflicted it's not a posable sort of character, like the Groot build. It looks nice, but probably not for me at the moment. My Chewie minifig is easier to display 😂 Honestly, it's just nice to see a Star Wars set that doesn't involve a thousand bricks of grey.
I find it interesting that in promotional images of the set, they showcase Reddish Brown ball joints/recievers (never existed before) when in reality they are all Gray in the set. What are your thoughts on that, Tiago?
I personally don't think the eyes are too deep. Chewbacca had pretty deep eyes on account of being a dude in a suit, and even so I think the eyes look ok. Although it is more difficult to judge from only photos and videos, as I don't own this model. I would love a Darth Vader of this scale, but I would even prefer General Grievous: Lego made a similar General Grievous model almost two decades ago, and I would love to see how they pull it off with the kinds of parts and techniques available now.
I mean: for the same price you can get four of the super-sized buildable minifigures, which have much better articulation and are a lot of fun (don't get me started about accessorizing them). I think this Chewbacca is a pass from me.
I really didn't like this at first glance. And there are certainly some things about it that look a little off, particularly the sunken eyes and the gaps in the plates in his forehead). But this review really made me like it a lot more than I did. Not high on my list, but I might actually get it now
Just curious how many SW fans are going to drop $200 on a Chewie that's a bit off...and perhaps too off department. I have my doubts, but we can hold out hope for other SW characters at this scale! My vote is for a Han or C-3PO next.
It didn’t even cross my mind. C-3PO would be amazing! But it will always have to be either super alien creatures or helmet characters. I don’t think we’re at the point where LEGO could pull off a human face at this scale out of the bricks
Imho this outcome was not worth putting it on the market. I appreciate the bowcaster and bandolier, Chewie himself is "meh", the head is just plain bad. There are much more better options out there to create a figure like this, why not pursue them first?
I think this is a really interesting model conceptually, but I’m definitely still of the view that the entire head looks absolutely vile (especially the eyes) and that’s a deal-breaker for me.
I'd not seen the Yoda or Grogu models before and wow those are genuinely hideous. That this looks at all decent is now even more impressive with that context.
