A busy couple of days on the Allotment! Picking, Sowing and Planting Out || Plot 37 (Episode 75)

The first of the drying beans are ready to pick in this weeks vlog, the Borlotti and the Greek Gigantese. So i'm harvesting, shelling and freezing them for use over winter. Talking of 'over winter' we are making progress with our winter plan. The carrots and red beetroot are cleared to make way for the first of the green manures we are using this year: Phacelia.
The few days of sunshine we had last week has meant that loads of the tomatoes and peppers have ripened in the polytunnel which is great news because i thought the tomato blight would get them before they were ready! But i think that was our last big tomato picking session of the year. I also clear away any plants that have no fruit left on them to make way. I'm planting Genovese basil, Thai basil, parsley and red- stemmed chicory in their space. And have lots growing in the greenhouse to fill the gaps as the tomatoes slowly finish.
We also clear away one load of Cima di rapa to make way to sow some more to try to continue the harvest. The chickens get their first taste of fresh sweetcorn.

On Sunday I had my most exciting ever celeb spot. Coming down the hill from Richmond park I spotted a lady with a trug basket walking up towards the school. Jessie's mum! It was all I could do not to scream at her. Keep up the good work guys look forward to your videos every time.

I am a Brit but I’m in America in South Georgia very hot. ! Love seeing you pod the borlottis. I did the same yesterday with our first harvest and they are now in the freezer. It was you that introduced me to the borlottis and I love the fact that in January we can still be eating produce from the allotment. Wonderful!

Electric fence or more precisely single strand wires set at about 4-6 and 9-12 inches above the ground around the hole plot or each individual bed, you will probably have to put in extra earthing rods as you have Sandy (dry) soil good earthing is essential, it just gives then a sharp shock and they learn to avoid it, all animals can sense the current in live wires so avoid them after a while

U could dig a small trench around the beds and put some metal sheets into the ground below the wood of beds and ending at the top of the wood. (So the metal is upright) it might stop them digging, a lot of work though

Its more the digging in the beds thats the problem. Or 'snuffling' rather than proper digging, just disturbing everything! lol.

Jalapeno/cayenne peppers might help with the badgers. I use fresh or jar Peppers, blitz in blender and spread around!

We sometimes have groundhogs around but even though they haven't caused a problem yet ( unlike the moles ,erg ) we trap and relocate them

Thanks Tamara! Ah, groundhogs not something we have to cope with! But moles are everywhere. Luckily they seem to prefer the immaculate lawns of the golf course... lol!

Cheers! And thanks for the tour. Badgers are very rare here, but we do have rabbits and male urine does nothing to deter them. I have to fence everything to get it to grow, except for the beans and parsley. Here it also is a bad year for tomatoes and peppers, but what I have is very tasty. Hopefully I can get a pumpkin to ripen. All the best and kind regards from the Netherlands!

The dahlias are beautiful. I grew shimmer tomatoes this year and have finally had a lovely crop. I will be growing them next year. Absolutely delicious. What I thought were marrows are enormous pumpkins, sadly too big for me to pick up. I may have to cut them up in situ.

in my garden it's the blackbirds digging holes and ripping young plants out. we don't have badgers here, but blackbirds can do the same amount of damage. now i know, why you use fruit cages (never heard of them before, we don't know such things in germany)

Those badgers! We get them here too, and we see their scratches down the wall of our chicken barn trying to get in. We have a sett at the bottom of one of the fields. Everything is so late this year. I grew dahlias from seed and they're still in bud. I'm hoping I'll get some before it gets cold. Snails have got some of my winter cabbage I put in, but we can only do what we can!

And then apologising about the scaffolding being taken down my first thought was "Quick, go see if they have some netting " Always enjoyable watching your antics.

Jess your plot is producing so much at the moment 👍 . The beans looked beautiful . I’ve never grown any type of beans but will definitely give them ago next year. The girlies have settled in so well an I loved you feeding them sweet corn has I’m sure they did to 🤗. My peppers 🫑tomatoes 🍅 are so good . One of my red peppers is Hugh . Can’t fit both my hands around it now . Definitely a stir fry coming up. An freeze the rest. Your hat is lovely. It’s always nice to receive a freebie that you know you will use. 🐓 👍👏

Thanks Paula! Yeah, after a slow start its really throwing the produce at us at the moment! :D I definitely recommend giving beans a go, so much to harvest from such a small space. Glad your Toms and Peppers are fab :D

HI yeah,,, butternut squash.... mine always grows loads of leaves and travells as much as i let it... i pinch back side shoots when they go in an inconcvenient direction.... mid august at long last therre is soem fruit set.....quite suddenly the fruit tkes off and within six weeks there are several on eahc plant.... i usuallt harvest (when the leaves are dying down) about 5 per plant, that will store thru winter on y staircase at home.

Hi one of the way we deal with badgers at the farm is by putting any kind of strong aftershave down and just keep putting it down every now and then it won’t get rid of them but it’ll stop them from coming on to your plot and make shore you don’t leave any eggs behind because they go crazy for eggs

I had problem with squirrels eating through the net on my fruit cage, low powered solar electric fence stopped them the first day and no further intrusions at all this year. I would go with a 1 wire low level for the badger, I am sure he will soon learn not to invade your patch. thanks for the videos I find them very relaxing, appreciate the effort you put in

There’s numerous things you can do but the suggestion of an electric wire is good. You can spray ammonia or bleach in the areas where they are getting in, as well. Hope you get them! Good luck!

Apparently scotch bonnet peppers deter badgers, also the citronella oil (Google make your own tiki torches) 🥰

Wonderful Vlog Jess, love the laughs. Your bean arches and beans this season are spectacular. Glad to see you harvest a few tomatoes at last. Maybe you can set a live trap for Mr. Badger? You haven’t mentioned how your college course is going, I imagine well. I am taking an online Horticultural course with Ohio State University. Have completed Botany and Soils modules so far, Entomology is next. Hope the rain holds off for ya Thursday. 🥰

Thank you! The beans are amazing this year, so productive. we've been giving them away by the kilo. :D We can't relocate the badgers because they have a designated, protected set on our site so it's a case of dissuading then from our plot rather than moving them. Oh well done on the course, thats great. Good luck with the Entomology module :D

It's called a live catch trap! They make them in many sizes. First you catch them then you transplant them elsewhere. No harm; no foul!

I mentioned in the video that we have a protected badger set on our site. They can't be relocated.

@@JessieatPlot37 I heard you say they were protected; I just had no idea that meant you were forced to keep them. Protected generally means you cannot harm them; not they can do as they like; so just deal with it. Crazy!

Hello love, I can feel your pain with the badgers I am battling a squirrel for the same problem. This year I decided to really focus on the succession concept. Each of my best tomato plants I let one to two suckers develop and put them in a jar for two weeks to develop roots then transfer to a pot. Now my tomatoes are just like yours so I pulled them all and replaced them with the sucker plants and now I have tomato flower and looking for tomatoes soon. I do want to boast a little bit. I understand the Bugs Bunny cartoon now!!!! bye for now.

Hi Jessie, I read somewhere that if you fill some 2 litre pop bottles with water ( to stop the wind blowing them away) and place them over the run where the badgers come in, they will not step over them. It worked for me. Good luck.

I’ve got no advice just sympathy. We don’t get badgers, but we do have the odd cabbage white butterfly...so far only about a gazillion! 🤨 But yep so disheartening for you, you have such a beautiful plot there Jessie. The great thing is you are not put off, you just have to roll with it. Thanks for taking the time.

So sorry about you’re badger problem, my dad swore by solar movement lights coming on and that unsettles them, also there are little ultra sonic deterrents you can buy a box that give off a low frequency noise that badgers and foxes don’t like, but that may not be nice for your lovely allotment cat or your chickens? Lovely to watch you harvest and always lovely music too xxx em xxx

Hi Jessie I’m loving the Vlogs I currently have badgers trashing my vegetable patch (they live on a nearby railway embankment ) they enter by digging under our boundary fence .i counter sink and secure a piece of wood like gravel board with heavy duty foil tacked on the face of it . So far so good they don’t like their paws on the foil I also sprinkle chilli flakes on the ground around any of their entrance and exit points

Hiya Jessie, loved the gift box you received perfect hat I too enjoy my hats! You mentioned citronella, may I suggest you google as you can plant in garden has a purple flower and citrusy scent,from what I briefly read it has all sorts of positive suggestions. We use over here in Ontario Canada as a bug repellent mosquito mostly, you can get oils for outdoor tourches candles,creams etc. Wow what a great harvest from the poly tunnel. Hello fellow hat-appreciator! And free hats are even better, :D Interesting, i'll look up what that plant is! Can always do with more flowers. Citronella comes from lemongrass (the one in the mozzy repellent and stuff) and i can hardly get that to grow molly-coddled in the greenhouse so i don't think i'd have much luck outside! :D

So disheartening to have your plants distributed; I've experienced the same pain. This was such a great video as it included so many things. Ditto JH:. Electric fencing is magic. We had badgers literally swinging from our bird table (yes they do love peanuts!) at the last house. DH put up just one strand of electric fence line where they were getting in and it worked almost immediately. Good luck. Love your updates.

So annoying about the badgers! No experience here with those, although I would provide a few pints to some mates and try a surreptitious application near an access point. Male urine outdoors will be undetectable to the human nose (this I can confirm unfortunately 🙄 🤦🏻‍♀️). Or try the citronella Love a fleecy lined hat! The chicks and the corn 💕. My sweet corn was a bust but my chicks are loving it anyway. Mine went dormant for a period and then it was uneven fertilization I think. Some kernels were normal but many were just wee kernels. The largest cob was not that large. Shame as it would have been a victory given our short growing season, plus we had unusually hot weather but I’ll try again next year. I did give it lots of water and mulched with straw to help with water retention. The leaf celery has dried up beautifully, just starting a second round today 🥂

Yeah, i think i might be inviting guests up with the sole purpose of getting them to 'mark their territory' for me! :D Ditto on the sweetcorn front this year... not a rave success. Next year! But like you say, the girls will eat whatevers not perfect. Good job on the celery leaf, i struggled a bit with mine. i think i left the first lot too long. But i'm having another go!

I have so many tomatoes since the heat now it’s going slow again. I also have one aubergine just starting to grow Oh boy the snails have had so many babies I’m out with torch again. We have 3 dry days coming Jessie but 🌥 🙁. Great video as always ooo I forgot I have 5 bell peppers growing too. Everything is outside so they have battle with the elements and predators. I’m pleased

Had the same issue with badger on my allotment earier in the season, small plants pulled out the ground! So annoying.. the only thing that worked for me was netting everything that was young and easy to pull out the ground, i took netting off when the plants established and got big, good luck xx

10/10 on the new hat! Can only think a really strong perimeter fence would work on the Badgers, which will be a big job installing but worth it. I'm always dubious if any of these scent methods actually work.

I’ve never grown butternut squash before, so I assumed it was just my inexperience causing a fail! I have one (for six plants) that should be fully ripe soon and as the other pollinated one(s) are still small, I’m just crossing my fingers and hoping!

That tall basil looks amazing. Dobies sell "Everleaf Emerald Towers" which is a Genovese Basil with the similar tall habit with a 12 week harvest period. I'm all over that for the summer.

Morning ladies, can you try a garlic spray or perhaps an ammonia spray, I don’t condone using paprika etc which some people use because they as well as squirrels 🐿 can get that in their eyes. Here we have a spray called Critter Ridder so I’m sure the UK would have something similar. Moms found her happy place with the girlies 😂😂. Hope your sister is feeling more upbeat about her garden it really is gorgeous there. Thank you for sharing as always ✌️🇨🇦🐝 safe

Sad to hear you finally have blight in the tunnel. I have to get in mine and have a good harvest and see what the state is. I haven’t been well enough as I have chronic health problems. Sitting looking at your garden when you can’t get out is frustrating. Good luck with the badgers. Not sure what to suggest other than essential oils/ citrus peels. Keep well x

Lovely video thank you. I was wondering how you keep the beautiful dhalias from getting eaten by pests. I've started to grow them from seed and this second year I just let them start off on their own but they didn't last all that long before they were devoured. So sad.

Jess I’m planting borlotti beans first time hope they look as good as yours I’ve put two arches together but waiting to put in garden for winds etc to lessen. Badgers I thought looking it was rabbits the doing that digging the hole didn’t look big enough.

Nice garden . For all big animals in the garden i introduced my dog in the garden and i feed the animals on the edge of the garden all arround the fence . They smell the pee off the dog and the animals don't take any risk and stay outside the fence . Hou can maybe adopt a dog ??? So many suffering behind bars in shelters ....

Hey I've had all sorts of animals on my plot fox's moles voles rabbits deer and one thing we did was take our dog around the edge of my plot and let him scent around then he lay in my shelter for abit seems to have put most animals off. Worth trying if u know someone with a male dog i mean its free and harmless x

It's Mr Fox and he's kids in my garden so I just wee in certain areas and that seems to work, so you could ask for donations from other Male allotment holders !

Hi Jessie, I've got the same problem on my allotment up here in Nottingham, badges+moles, they are a pain in the backside😭🤪makes you wonder if it's worth it sometimes 🙏😠. Anyway take care both of you 😉🤗
